I think the GM title would be empty, in name only. It wouldn't really mean anything in this case.
Rivera has decision making authority over roster construction. If he wants to delegate it to someone that's his call. But Kyle will put together the draft board and prioritize free agents. Richard Rogers will handle the negotiating. And Rivera will oversee them both - he'll take Kyle's information about free agents, Kyle will make recommendations, and Rivera will tell Rogers who to pursue. So unless Rivera decides he wants to completely delegate that process to someone and name them General Manager to oversee all of it, I don't imagine a General Manager having much to actually do. You've got the guy handling all things scouting in Smith, you've got the guy handling negotiations in Rogers, and you've got the guy making the decisions in Rivera. Don't know what else you need, except for a Director of College Personnel to report in to Smith, who already knows that world really well.
A lot of reporters on the Redskins beat are thinking that they may not hire a GM at all and just keep things as they are. |

Which would make complete sense org-chart wise now that Kyle has been moved into this role. |

Doug technically promoted. I'd call it "pushed aside". |
Re: Coaching and Front Office Changes
Kyle moves up to VP of Player Personnel and will oversee both the college personnel and pro personnel departments. So he's overseeing the work to put together the draft board and overseeing the work to scout out free agents.
Rivera still retains authority on who to actually select in the draft and on who to sign in free agency. But he'll be relying on Kyle's information. I like the idea of moving your college scouting guy up to this level, once he's proved himself. The guys he put on his draft board three years ago are about to hit free agency in a year or so. So he can combine what he saw in the process leading up to the draft with what he's seeing in the pros.
very happy to see this and thanks Schneed .. Things are coming together very nicely for a change.. |
Re: Coaching and Front Office Changes
Wow.
I don't know that I could've asked for a better beginning to the offseason so far. Dan consults with NFL people outside his chosen circle. Gruden, Callahan gone, Allen fired. Doug Williams "promoted" from player evaluations to player mentor. Ron Rivera hired, with consultation from Gibbs and Snyder. Kyle Smith promoted to VP of player personnel. Really the only negative is KOC leaving, but I feel like the Scott Turner hire is only a mild downgrade to start, with the chance to improve depending on offensive performance. My glass is definitely half full now, and we haven't even gotten to FA. |

I'm not sure we had more in KOC, than we do currently with Turner. Time will tell, but it will probably be a little bit difficult to evaluate KOC's impact with the Rams, and whether any success is his doing or McVay's. |
Re: Coaching and Front Office Changes
Besides the Rivera hiring, BA firing, the Smith promotion is the best news this offseason. Would have loved to have KOC too.

One step at a time, and with what would seem like due diligence and thought. Now that Kyle Smith is over thw whole player evaluation and acquisition group, i expect they will look at what options exist for LT, and put together both a "stay here" package for TW as well as trade and replace plan in case the stay here option fails. I would think they want that settled prior to FA, and possibly the combine. Sent from my SM-G973U using Tapatalk |

I’m super excited for Turner, I thought he was a better choice over KOC. Norv and his offense has NEVER gone out of style and we will get an update version of it thru his son. Haskins size and arm reminds me of Cam (more throwers than passer) Turner got a dose of what a skilled RB does for an offense...AP thanks for the memories... Also Turners offense was something like the 3rd most playaction passes on first down...a complete opposite of Jay and Callahan. We will need RB who can catch and TE will be very active in the passing game. Also, when you look at the defense, most the personnel is set outside CB and probably (hopefully) Free Safety. I expect a lot of movement on offense and Turner working to get guys in his system coming in will only help. |

It’s called a “sideways” move for Doug Williams. Kyle Smith’s promotion to VP is great!! If he has another great draft and FA he might get the GM nod, or has some have commented, filling the GM job may be not necessarily. But I’m sure Kyle would like another promotion and more money!! Rivera is going to be too busy working on his duties as a coach to deal with that sort of stuff during the season. It could be that Kyle is handling all of those duties, but if so, why not give him the GM title? I still think there is a good chance someone comes in to fill that GM/Team President type role. If for nothing else, I think we need someone to resolve disagreements between Kyle and Ron that is not Snyder. |

Nope. I explained why I think there is a need. During the season, Ron will be too busy coaching the team to worry about non-football ops stuff, making decisions on IR, practice squad players, etc. The goal is not to complicate the process, but to have someone that can handle a lot of the grunt work so he can focus on leading the team. |

Hopefully he can handle it. I'm pretty sure that's what he was brought in to do. |

I'm pretty sure he was not brought in to handle non-football ops stuff, at minimum. Unless I've missed a hire, this portion of Bruce's old job has not yet been filled. Currently, we are "down a man" in the front office when compared to most other organizations. |

Every indication is that we will bring in a GM after the draft, and that guy should be a Rivera guy, not Kyle Smith. You don't double jump a college personnel guy to GM. Bring in a recognized GM, maybe Morocco Brown, but definitely bring a guy in. |
Re: Coaching and Front Office Changes
We'll see...I think the jury is still out on this. If things go really well the next few months, they may not feel the need to bring in a general manager. It's not like they would be setting a new precedent.

Isn't his new position VP of player personnel? I thought that's what his new position is. I think they should just bring in a guy to replace LaFemina but otherwise whoever's running business ops won't have anything to do with football ops. |
Re: Coaching and Front Office Changes
Don't get hung up on titles. Smith is running personnel. Rivera is calling all the shots. Any type of GM he brings in would just be someone for them to collaborate with and to be an administrator type that handles day to day business as BHA was saying.

Re: Coaching and Front Office Changes
Bruce Allen is gone and that's all I really care about. How they set things up from here, I don't really care. Kyle seems like he is well respected plus RR worked under his dad so there's a connection there. If they bring in Brown after the draft then great. If not then that is fine too. As long as Allen is gone then it's all good with me. Hope you enjoy retirement Bruce. Or.. maybe you can start doing radio like Vinny.

This. I really like Doug Williams moving out of his role tho and Kyle Smith promoted. But, the Front office is facing a lot of moving parts this offseason, its gonna be the most exciting and interesting offseason in years. And they really need to make the right moves in building around a young QB, its an art and a science. I will crush them if they fuck it up. |

Well it depends on how quickly they start winning more than losing. If the fans come back, and we start truly competing Im not sure what his motive would be to tinker. He seems for the immediate past to be letting RR take over in every way. |

I agree...I think the coaching staff coming together has been really good moves. I brought it up previously, but opportunities abound with personnel: 1. Nice assortment of draft picks, 2nd overall 2. Opportunities to get out of dumb, overpaid veterans with limited cap penalties 3. Extension opportunities with young players 4. Nice assortment of free agents at positions of need: CB, Tight End 5. A good amount of cap space |

Yes, they worked together. Kyle is on his 11th year, Morocco left in 2014. However, JP Finlay said keep an eye on Joe Schoen from Buffalo via Carolina. All this could go out the door if Kyle is promoted to GM after the draft. Lots of rumors. |
Re: Coaching and Front Office Changes
BHA you make very good points about how some of the day to day gets executed.
We currently know that Kyle will oversee all scouting, both professional and college scouting. We know he will create the draft board. We know Rob Rodgers will handle contract negotiations. We don’t know who will negotiate trades, make waiver wire adds, etc. It could be that Rivera asks for Kyle to present him with a list of possibles and Rivera makes the decision. As to who is actually processing the paperwork, that seems more administrative. Anybody could do it. You could have a low level administrator executing Rivera’s wishes, and that admin could report in to Kyle or Rivera himself. To me the only major function that hasn’t been assigned yet is the non-football operations boss. I think Rivera and Smith function as the chief decision makers with all authority sitting with Rivera. Who runs the business side still seems up in the air. |
