This news is a nonstory but it's still better than discussing the team names. Martavis Bryant is having a tryout with us - I would be surprised if he makes it to the 53 roster, but I love the fact that we are looking at everywhere to find gems.

Yes the name is fine. No, it is not Snyder's name. If you really want a name change, you better hope for this team be unsuccessful, because IMO that is the only way it will change. If this team starts winning, you better start loving the name.

Our new owner is not stupid enough to spend 20-30 mil on a name change just because a few fans are still butthurt about it.

CumHanders is a jerkoff name. I will never start “liking” it.
I prayed for Snyder to be removed, and he was removed, for the same reason I pray the name is removed. It is no good.
I would be perfectly happy to go right back to WFT and not a dime would need to be spent on rebranding. Just a press release by officials/ownership saying the name CumHanders is trash and nobody likes it, therefore we’re removing the last stench of Snyder. 😁

You know how CumHanders is a jerkoff name?
When you think of the word commander, what picture comes to mind?
Is it a navy dude? Is it that pig captain turdy?
What is it EXACTLY that comes to mind when you hear that word?

If the answer is not perfectly clear, then you know that it’s a shit name and the jerkoff that gave it to our team screwed us one more time on the way out the door with the weakest shit in the NFL.

Yep, apparently he was on Cowboys practice squad last year. Also played for XFL for a little bit.

That is just it, it isn't opinion. Every etymologist that has assessed the term found that it was not a derogatory term. Every single one (try finding one that claims otherwise). That makes it a fact. They do concede it is offensive to some, and like many words (that aren't derogatory) has been used in a derogatory manner by some people (but not generally so even in the 19th century), but that doesn't make the term derogatory. And again I'm not arguing it is coming back I know it isn't. I'm just saying when someone makes the claim it is or was a derogatory term I will throw the BS flag.

at least we got some good memes out of this. meanings change over time. It may not have been derogatory then, by the 1980s people started changing their opinions (in writing).

There's plenty of examples of that. Slavery used to be legal, now its not (in most of the world). Semantic arguments aren't worth engaging in. This isn't a college course and no one really wants to spend 4 hours writing a book report to argue with someone they don't know on the internet.

Come back to this thread in 10 years. You'll probably think this whole tangent was a bit silly too.

No, they don't. I'm sure vast majority will be triggered and whine about it cuz the TV and ppl like Elizabeth Warren told them to.. you know, the type that want attention, maybe to be featured in a meme or viral video somewhere.

Then there's ppl who genuinely get offended. Everyone has feelings, everyone's gonna deal with them in the way they deem necessary.

This shit got blown up under a microscope. I hate every single bit of it because above all it screams/screamed woke/cancel culture which is basically fuckin bullying on a grand scale. Fuck that. I'll never be ok with how the name thing went down just like I'll never be ok with the way woke white folks were at the forefront pushing it and we just happened to be the team with a name to pick on so they could feel like they fuckin belonged...

It's not just our name for me - that's just a part of the mountain when it comes to the disdain I have for society today and the way we operate as a populous. It's disgusting.

Nonetheless... go back to WFT if you'll never go back to the skins. I'd rather no name at all then do what Snyder did and let sponsors and societal pressure pull his pants down no lube. I will always root for the team but I don't like the commies, I don't want the stench of Snyder and I want some sort of big middle finger to the soft ass ppl that don't even belong speaking on or advocating for an issue that doesn't involve them just for the sake of it.

Yes language changes but in order for it to have changed into a derogatory term it would have had to be used as a derogatory term against someone. Thing is the offended determine what offends them but it's the ones that use a term in a derisive manner that make a term derogatory not those who are the victims of the term. So, did Redskins suddenly start being used widely as a slur starting in the 1980s?

My first thought to the word Commanders is in terms of the military or commander in chief. Never even heard of the term cumhander.

I personally cannot stand the name Commanders. In the AZ Mills mall in Tempe, AZ i can still buy all kinds of Redskins gear (jerseys, hats, shirts, coffee cups, etc.) there, even for new players that came after the name change. So buy my Redskins gear from them. I even wear a Redskins shirt to coach my two NFL Flag Commanders teams. To me it will always be Redskins, no matter what name they go by. ITs why i didn't mind WFT as they were always that and will always be. You can just use whatever moniker you want.

When I hear the name commander I don’t see a clear picture of anything. I see a vague reference that can be applied to military or a veiled reference of commander in chief. Both are weak AF. (If you hear a team nickname, ie Cowboys, Eagles, Bears, Dolphins you should be immediately able to picture what that is!)
The picture of captain turdy looking goofy AF, or Joe Biden senile joker smiling doesn’t inspire respectability.
All I can picture is the final epic failure in a long line by Dan where he Completely, and I do mean completely ran this once respected franchise into the ground all the way to losing our identity.
I don’t believe any of us should be burdened with that failure, and such a poor choice of nickname any longer. It should be stricken and just revert to WFT.
It will ALWAYS be Redskins to me.

I've never talked to 1 person in real life that likes the name Commanders. They don't really even make fun of it, it's mostly they are empathetic to the stupidity of the name that we have to deal with.

It's a stupid, stupid name. And Harris will hear about it from the fans until it's changed. Even if we are winning. It's going to get changed again relatively soon. I'd say within the next 5 years.

Seriously, even with our current name, how hard would it be to have these uniforms and just replace the helmet logo with some sort of C-logo? Exact same colors. Nothing else changes.

Do a true fan contest to draft the best C logo you can create then have the fans vote on the logo they want.

Our Redskins uniforms were just so fucking dope, including best helmet in all of football, regardless of level.

I find it hilarious how some fans think the team name is the one thing that was so horribly done by Snyder (which he probably didn't care about and likely not involved in), yet they tend to disregard all the actual things that he did to undermine the success of this team, both on and off the field.

For those of you that are so passionate about your hatred of the name, talk to me again when this team goes on a successful streak of multiple winning seasons. Because I'm pretty sure the name will be irrelevant at that point.

I like the W on the helmet, but could definitely get behind a C. For people wanting a name change the W makes more sense as it will transition regardless of a name. I don't really know if that matters, I am not a billionaire nor have I been involved in a rebranding.

I'd be fine w/ the W too (or a re-designed W). Exact same old uniforms and colors, slap a W or C on that helmet, and I think a lot more people would be happy(ier) even if we kept the name Commanders.

Re: 2024 Commanders Off-Season Thread

We may not be able to get our fabulous Redskins logo back but we can surely go back to our true team colors. I would ask the new owners to give us that much.

We need to get as many of our team traditions back as we can to raise our spirits. That's one reason we could use a two syllable team name. With that change, we can smoothly revive our team fight song, "Hail to the (two syllable) new team name". Just change a few lyrics to make it fit. Pair that with an impressively loud team band (another tradition) and the fans will sing it happily after every score.

The W on the helmet feels legit to me. No redesign for the W is needed. I would definitely not like a C on it.

To be honest, I still think the name Commanders has got to go. I don't think I'll ever get used to it. That's because Snyder gave us fans the finger when he ignored the name we voted for and then demanded his own clumsy branding, and it still sticks in my craw. I want to give him the finger right back by asking the current owners to adopt another, better team name.

You're right that it happened on his watch, but to me the choice of the name Commanders was more of a Ron Rivera thing than Snyder.

Once he lost the battle of trying to keep the name Redskins, Snyder probably didn't give two shits about what the new name was going to be.

the problem was that he did the big survey and polled people on which of names the front office proposed they would like. . . . then went with a name that wasn't even on the list to vote for, which was just a huge FU to the fans, which makes the Commanders name a huge FU to the fans. They could win the damn Super Bowl next year and the next, and I STILL would want that horrible name changed after both of them! And I'd be upset that they won them while having that name. It sucks! Look I realize that them being a winning team is what matters most, but there's a reason that teams aren't named the Pussywillows and have pink uniforms, they want the fans to LIKE the look of it's team...and that has been taken away from us. It does not feel, sound, or certainly LOOK like the team I grew up loving and rooting for...it feels like an expansion team like others have suggested. If they can't be called the Redskins any more, then I at least want them to LOOK like they used to look at least...so it still feels like MY team.

I definitely wouldn't be in favor of a "C" on the helmets and have no issue with a "W" but my favorite would be "FU" for all the haters but suspect the NFL wouldn't go for it. Whatever, if ever, the team name is changed, dear God let it be ANYTHING but Commanders.
Whether you like it or not, if (and hopefully when) the team becomes successful, the name is likely going to stay and it is going to become associated with the current ownership group. IMO it already is associated with the current group, outside of the DC area.

I guess the silver lining for the name hating crowd is that if the team is terrible in the next couple of seasons, they'll get the name change they've been clamoring for.
You're right that it happened on his watch, but to me the choice of the name Commanders was more of a Ron Rivera thing than Snyder.

Once he lost the battle of trying to keep the name Redskins, Snyder probably didn't give two shits about what the new name was going to be.

I'm pretty sure there'd be fans complaining about the name Red Tails or Redhawks or whatever other name they would have picked.
I 100% disagree with this. I think Snyder knew his time was coming to an end and wanted to put a stamp on the team. This name is truly Snyderesque and there is 0 chance that Riveria had controlling input on the name. I do think it could have been a lot on Jason Wright, but Snyder is 100% responsible.
