I told you that was the deal Gibbs was talking about Snyder locking up G Williams for three years, no coincidence that is the same year Gibbs contract runs out and he takes over the HC job for the Skins. They were saying Buges leaked it out in an interview according to my buddy over at ExtremeSkins.

As much as I dislike Snyder, I love his pocketbook (and Snyder's willingness to use it).

I worship Gibbs and I adore Williams. Williams is learning from the best and he'll be a great head coach! I'm so friggin happy right now!

I think he took the deal because he and his family are so happy in Washington, and money was one of the only temptations that could have made him want to leave.

He will be around for the 2006 season, it just means that this time next year he's free to interview for jobs if he wants. Of course, if he does, I'll bet Dan Snyder busts out the pocketbook again. I think he wants nothing more than to keep Gregg to be his next head coach.

I love the organizational structure in place. HTTR!

Yeah, not to be forgotten in all this is the affect it will have on the team. I'm sure it sets the team at ease knowing Gregg will be back. And for some of them, I'll bet it flat out fires them up for the Tampa game.

Funny thing was how badly misinformed the Washington Post was on this issue. People like Maske and other junior writers thinking it was a forgone conclusion that Williams would be gone.

The Washington Redskins have signed Gregg Williams, assistant head coach/defense, to a new three-year contract, the team announced on Jan. 3
"Gregg is a valuable and important member of our organization,' said Head Coach Joe Gibbs. "This is a first step in recognizing his contributions and maintaining consistency among our coaches."

After returning to the Washington Redskins in 2004, Gibbs made putting together a premium coaching staff a priority and he started with Williams. In just two seasons Williams has solidified the Redskins defense among the best in the NFL, finishing 2005 ranked ninth in the league and 2004 ranked third.

Considered one of the brightest defensive minds in professional football, Williams brought a brand of defense based on toughness and persistence to the Redskins, as well as a proven track record of shaping NFL defensive squads into among the league's best year after year.

Williams came to Washington after three years as Head Coach of the Buffalo Bills, where in 2003 his defense finished second in the NFL, improving from 15th in 2002 and 21st in 2001.

He took over as head coach of the Buffalo Bills after 11 seasons in the Tennessee/Houston organization, including four seasons as defensive coordinator, where his 2000 defensive team ranked No. 1 in the NFL.

Coach Williams will be interviewed live today at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Redskins.com.

Generally, any coach can interview for a higher position on another team, with the permission of his current team. I don't know if that's something that has to be put into the actual contract language. But it sounds like Snyder's going to make Williams one of the highest-paid coaches in the league-- head coach or not. So considering he still has kids in school-- and he's said they don't want to move, and he doesn't want to move them-- I'd say if the money's the same here, he probably won't go anywhere else.

Another team would have to put together a real blockbuster deal to pull Williams away from Washington. That's not to say it won't happen, but from the sound of it, Williams would want a personnel situation similar to what Gibbs has here with the Redskins-- meaning as head coach he would have significant control over personnel decisions, and the ownership would be willing to spend whatever is necessary to make those decisions a reality. There simply aren't that many franchises where that situation would work-- at least not with someone with a less-than-stellar head coaching record like Williams's.

I think Williams knows how good he has it here, and I think he's competitive enough that he wouldn't back down from the challenge of filling Gibbs's hallowed shoes when Gibbs retires.

This is the type of character that Joe Gibbs keeps around him. This is why he is a HOF coach and this is why the players play so hard for them. This is why Snyder wanted Gibbs back....stability, consistency, and CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL!

Not sure how true this is, but the fox sports article explicitly states Williams has agreed not to interview this offseason. He has the option to test the coaching market next year though.

I would expect that to be the case. The new contract is basically a one-year guarantee of Williams's retention as Assistant Head Coach-Defense. But like I said, I don't expect him to be going anywhere after next season, either.

I can't believe Danny boy and Gibbs got him to stay. Just this morning I figured he had the Rams or Chiefs job locked up because they both needed defensive coaches. Our defense has been awesome during this winning streak and he deserves a fat deal, especially if we can whup the Bucs with our depleted secondary. Yeah to the real G Dubs.
