Grade the 'Skins draft

1.5 Sean Taylor

3.18 Chris Cooley

5.19 Mark Wilson

6.15 Jim Molinaro

BrudLee 04-26-2004 08:33 AM

I gave it a B. Despite a great first round selection, and a contributor in Cooley, the late rounds left me scratching my head. Until some young bodies make it to our defensive line (thru trades or UDFA's), day 2 looks like a waste. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

Redskins_P 04-26-2004 08:40 AM

I also gave it a B. I think Cooley was a great pick in 3rd round.

RedskinPete 04-26-2004 09:04 AM

I gave it a B but the lineman that were picked up if they are as good as FO and Gibbs staff thinks is all right by me!! You NEVER can have too many O lineman!!! The more and more I hear about Taylor the better I like the pick and the more and more I hear Winslow talk I like the Tayor pick!!! Cooley is the more important pick because we are giving away high picks in a draft next year. He needs to be all Gibbs thinks he can be!!! I still think the undrafted free agents will be a big deal for the Skins. Gibbs has alway found a starter or a very good back up here so I hope he dose his thing and in a big way!!!

Spearhead 04-26-2004 09:11 AM

I gave em an A
only b/c I think Gibbs did a great job with very few picks and S.Taylor will be a punisher

Coulda given em a B, but I'll trust Gibbs about Cooley, and respect the idea that we never have "too many" Olineman. Also trusting that there weren't any DL players that impressed him enough late in the draft.

so it's an A- but an A of faith.

MTK 04-26-2004 09:11 AM

I gave it a B.

Taylor is an A+ instant impact type player.

Cooley seems like a total Gibbs guy, a heady player who should fit right into the h-back mold. I'd give him a B.

Wilson seems like he could be a steal and in the hands of Bugel could be a starter in a year or two. C+.

Molinaro is our project pick of this draft. Incomplete.

Ade Jimoh Fan Club 04-26-2004 09:19 AM

I gave them an "A" for several reasons:

1) I have drunk the Joe Gibbs koolaid and trust his decisions to be the best for the Skins.

2) I am assuming that the Samuels for Will Smith rumors are true - that would rock - and explain the late round OL picks.

3) Sean Taylor is a st-ud!

4) They did not draft any cornerbacks to compete with Ade Jimoh!!

Defensewins 04-26-2004 10:11 AM

I gave them a "B".

Sean Taylor will be a star.
I like the comparisons of TE Cooley to Clint Didier. This was before the Redskins picked him.
I like the size of the O-lineman. Bugel picked them and I trust his ability to mold them into Hogs.
We will get d-lineman after the June 1 cuts.
Our current d-lineman are decent. New Def. Coordinator will be the diffrence maker.

Carnage 04-26-2004 10:18 AM

I gave them an A because I am counting the free agents we traded our picks for. Taylor, Cooley, some hogs, Brunnell and Portis is a good pull.

backrow 04-26-2004 12:16 PM

Don't forget Portis, Brunnell and the DT's picked up last year!

SKINSnCANES 04-26-2004 12:20 PM

I went with an A because this years draft yielded Sean Taylor, Clinton Portis, Mark Brunnel, Chris Cooley....and a few o and d linemen. We didnt go about it the way most teams do but we have impact talent that can contribute this year. Sean Taylor is going to be great and the move for Cooley makes me think he wanted him more than Winslow anyways. We drafted a bunch of blue collar guys that bring their all week in and week out.

Spearhead 04-26-2004 12:33 PM

completely agree SKINSnCANES
as an offseason it's amazing how many areas have been upgraded- including the secondary which was probably a big concern for all of us when we lost Champ

but that's why they get an A for this draft- Gibbs is apparently on a 2 year plan and his strategy this offseason showed it on Off and Def (ok maybe not dline completely but we'll see)

JWsleep 04-26-2004 01:40 PM

I gave em a B, but it's contingent. If one of the O-line prospects pans out (I mean gets some time as a decent backup in the next 2 years), then it's an A. Taylor is the real deal, and the right pick over KW II (Thank you coach Williams!). Cooley looks like a Joe Gibbs type player with all the tools to be our new H back. The 2nd rounder was a bit high, but if he starts in the next two years (which I bet he will), then it's a great pick. Since Bugel is one of the great developers of o-linemen, either of these could be a great pickup. Remember Joe Jacoby!! It makes a lot of sense to give Bugel some players to work with. That's what he does. So, maybe it's an A. But I'll be cautious yet.

BossHog 04-26-2004 01:52 PM

I give a B only because we had four picks.

Phat Hog 04-26-2004 02:00 PM

I gave them a B/B+ because they did not draft any DL players even in later rounds. Maybe they have their eyes on the UFA market.

spanishomelette 04-26-2004 02:36 PM

I say B...I like going after new Hogs. Getting those behemoths was a great idea. DL is something that I think will need to be addressed creatively...say with on field tactics that minimize the weakness.

memphisskin 04-26-2004 02:46 PM

B, again we traded our picks for vets and gave away a 2nd to get Portis. A+ if including Portis in the draft, I'd rather have him than any of the other backs in the draft. Taylor immediately upgrades our d, i'm buying his jersey as soon as it's available.

Riggo44 04-26-2004 08:42 PM

I gave them a B. S.T is worthy of an A but I think the jury is out on the others for the next few years.

Cush 04-26-2004 08:57 PM

B, failed to address the needs on the DL (there's always the June 1st cuts) & for trading away next years 2nd round pick

skins009 04-26-2004 09:35 PM

F once again we have begin to piss away our picks for next year. We have up a second rounder next year?????? Plus our two day 2 picks were a waste. We need d-line. The FO should get credit for picking Sean tayler. Though i do think that was the right move, over Windslow. FO make their money in the later rounds and once again they failed there, any gave up to much for Cooley.

Jamaican'Skin 04-26-2004 09:57 PM

A faithful B because I hope the FO and JG know what they are doing.

diehardskin2982 04-27-2004 02:42 AM

i may be the only one but i disagree with the possible samuels trade he will return to a dominat tackle under bugle, i think we just need one playoff season for all the players to realize it's worth it to be on this team

SmootSmack 04-27-2004 02:55 AM

I'm not sold on the offensive linemen that we drafted. Chris Cooley could be a cheap alternative at H-Back. And Sean Taylor....well, I'm busy scultping his Canton bust. Curmudgeon is working on the portrait.

But the redskins have made it clear that they're going to leverage their deep pockets and primarily build their team through free agency and trades. Portis, Springs, Griffin, Washington, Brunel. That's not bad at all

But since I'm looking at their entired offseason, I have to bump them up to an A/A- because they have added an unbelievable coaching staff and I think that will pay huge dividends

kingerock 04-27-2004 05:05 AM

I give a reluctant B- wanting to go more C to D'ish. I just think it's a mistake not doing anything else on the defensive line. Griffin was great but I don't think the move for Daniels (1st free agent signing i believe) was any type of block buster move to bolster our defensive line. We have glaring holes on the D line. I give it a B- because of Coach Gibbs and my love for all things Redskins.

JoeRedskin 04-27-2004 09:32 AM

I give it a solid B with the possibility of moving into B+. The Skins had four picks and got a quality starter with pro-bowl potential, a solid TE/HBack who may start but will almost certainly be in the rotation, and two players for depth on the line.

If even one of the late picks stick long term, that means 75% of the picks were successful. To me that's a pretty good success rate. The only reason to downgrade, in my opionion, is that they didn't address the D-Line. But, quite frankly, it is unlikely you are going to get an impact D-Line starter in the late rounds anyway.

A lot depends on how you grade drafts:
How does volume factor in?
How did you address your team needs?
What is the projected success rate of your picks?

With 4 picks, the Skin's addressed two glaring needs TE/HBack and Safety. That alone gets them a B-.

Beemnseven 04-27-2004 09:47 AM

I gave them a 'C' because I witnessed yet another draft where the defensive line was completely neglected. And giving up next year's valuable second round pick for a position that I firmly believe WASN'T a glaring need -- TE/H-back -- really made the Skins draft grade take a hit in my mind.

The only saving grace is Sean Taylor. I am so thankful we didn't go after Kellen Winslow. While he may someday be a great player, he was too high of a pick to spend on a player who won't be able to display his great pass catching capabilities.

Taylor will give us an immediate impact, and he fills a void that hasn't been addressed since the days of Alvin Walton, Brad Edwards, and Danny Copeland.
