Offensive Coordinator
I think that the Redskins would be a better offensive football team if we had an offensive coordinator to help Gibbs come back to being a genius at calling offensive plays. We desperately need an OC if we ever want to compete for a championship in the near future.
|
Re: Offensive Coordinator
I think when we acquire several playmakers on the off-season at the WR, and TE position it will allow Coach Gibbs to open his masterpiece plays up. The more confident he is in is players the more creative trick plays we will see. One good #2 Wideout who can block as well as catch with exceptional speed will take the attention off of Santana Moss.
Remember John Gruden called Gibbs as Offensive Innovator and he was referring to his plays that revolutionized the game. |
Re: Offensive Coordinator
Your offense is as good as your players are...Gibbs is doing fine with the play calling. Lets not also forget that he instituted the shotgun formation this off-season. We all play Madden but NFL play calling is a different ball game. No coach with a comfortable lead will be reckless with the ball and throw like crazy.

Exactly, I mean the offense can't be doing that bad if Mark Brunell threw for the most TDs ever in his career, Santana Moss set a single-season franchise receiving yards record, Clinton Portis set one for rushing, and Cooley set a record for most receptions by a TE. "The Gibbs' offense" is also being felt in Carolina with OC Dan Henning (former Redskin coach with Gibbs) and in Pittsburgh with OC and Assistant Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm (former players with Gibbs). Carolina and Pitt, like the Skins, are three of only eight teams still standing. |
Re: Offensive Coordinator
Anyone else listen to "skinny on the skins" through iTunes? I completely agree with Rusty on Joe Gibbs' play calling.
|
Re: Offensive Coordinator
The offensive made HUGE strides this year.
They finished #11 overall, produced a WR that was 2nd in the NFL with 1483 yards and a RB who was 4th in the NFL in rushing with 1516 yards, both team records. I think the offense is fine. |

Yeah except Gibbs isn't the primary playcaller |
Re: Offensive Coordinator
The Redskins offensive braintrust, which consists of Joe Gibbs, Joe Bugel, Don Breaux, Jack Burns, Bill Musgrave, and Earnest Byner has by my rough estimation 160 years of combined coaching experience. I can't imagine who else they could hire that would have anything to add. They have enough cooks, they need to buy some better groceries.

Gibbs doesn't need another offensive coordinator. Come on man...the O had one bad game against the #1 defense in the league. |

Re: Offensive Coordinator
Im certainly for an offensive playcaller other than Gibbs.
The problem with our offense is you NEVER know what to expect. One day they're putting up 35 on the Cowboys, the next day they're breaking history for fewest yards in a playoff game. Granted there's a difference between the two teams, it's not like Tampa happened to be the '85 Bears. It seems that if our offense starts out of sync, they never find a way to get it back in sync. I still don't trust Mark Brunell and I feel the ball needs to be spread around a bit more. I like what we started doing with Portis late in the year. I realize Moss has had a career year, and I hope we can expect this from him every year. Unfortunately, I'm not sold we'll have that every year. His past history indicates a bit otherwise. Hopefully I'm wrong here but it takes at least two years of playing at a high level to convince me said problems are gone. Dmek -- Id love to go back and count how many times we've done that during Gibbs reign and NOT gotten the W. |

Our offensive is good, but is very flakey. The last two games it has hit a low, because of Brunell being injuried or whatever other reason. Something is still not there, and we all could feel that the last two games. And because the offense was not working that well, Gibbs went ultra-conservative, atleast in my opinion. I mean, if you look at the Cowboys game, we really didn't stop firing till the gun, a total opposite stragety when compared to the Tampa game. By the way, no Martz, a little bit too fruity for me. |
Re: Offensive Coordinator
I believe the problem we are running into right now is the Eagles showed teams how to attack on defense, and that's to take away Moss, and Cooley, and don't worry about anyone else, because Brunell will first look Moss, if he's not there he goes right to Cooley, then throws it away. Brunell needs to get our other WR's involved, and involved early. I believe he has to make the defense account for either Jacobs, or Thrash, that should thin out the coverage some on either Moss, or Cooley.
|
Re: Offensive Coordinator
I think Sunra has the plan. On offense, pick up a couple of more weapons of the reciever, etc nature, and call it good! While I would like to "thrash" the hell out of all opponents like 91', you call the game according to what you have. It's about winning, WE ARE. Who can argue with the results? If Gibbs wants a coordinator, so be it!

Then that isn't a problem with the offensive philosophy as what some here claim everytime we don't score more than 21 points. That to me just says that we need another deep threat receiver to compliment Moss. One more deep threat receiver can make all the difference in the world. If we go with another offensive coordinator (which tells me people are still not sold on Joe Gibbs which is ignorant in my opinion) then you still just have Moss, Cooley, and Portis. Like it or not, this is Redskins football and this is what has made Joe Gibbs' teams champions in the past and what has them in the second round of the playoffs now. We've seen proof that the system works. I believe this is just a knee jerk reaction. Just like several weeks ago when people wanted Gregg Williams to leave Washington after the defense looked as if it was folding under. Now, it's the samething with Joe Gibbs or Don Breaux. Have faith in this team. Even if we don't get passed the Seahawks this weekend, you can't deny Gibbs and company have done all the right things to get us to this point. |

I agree. If anything I liked about Ramsey he would look for the OPEN MAN. I realize plays are designed for Moss or Cooley, but if he doesn't find either of them open, he throws it away. |

Saying we need a new coordinator at this point in the season really seems like a knee jerk reaction, especially considering the level of success this offense has reached this year. Is the offense all the way there yet? No, definitely not. But we're certainly on our way, and bringing in a new coordinator at this point seems pretty unnecessary. |
Re: Offensive Coordinator
Brunell throwing the ball away, probably sealed up that win in TB. All he had to do was limit turnovers. He did. We won. We DEFINATELY need some complimentary recievers, if we ever want to win a championship game. We could probably get there without them, but to win we need them. Just look at what NE did to the Colt's offense last year. Everyone who played on their offense went to the pro-bowl. 3 recievers with 1000+ yards and 10 TD's apiece... and they go to NE and get held to 3 pts? You gotta be ready to face better D's than Tampa and walk away with some time of possession (at least) and no TO's.

Re: Offensive Coordinator
What the heck would an OC do? You think Gibbs is gonna bring is someone who is going to make wholesale changes to the offense? Gibbs has philosophy about offense. That philosophy worked pretty darn well back in the day and he has updated it to fit today's game with good results this year. I just don't see what an OC would do that would be a benefit. A new system is not what is needed. Some health and another WR who can get open is what is needed.
And I wouldn't say the problem is that Brunell only looks 2 places. The problem is that we have no one who can consistently get open other than Moss and Cooley. I went to every home game this year and sat in the nose bleeds. I got a good look from above on how our WRs do. In the first part of the year when everything wasn't clicking very well the WRs were the only thing getting the job done. Moss was consistently open and Patten required almost as much coverage. Patten didn't catch a lot of balls but he absolutely changed what our WRs as a group could do and how teams played in the secondary. When he went down it killed Moss and no one else could get open like Patten. He was a big loss. I think the biggest goat on our offense has to be Taylor Jacobs. Everyone talked about how this guy could be a good WR but he did not nothing to help the passing game even in an indirect way like Patten was able to. We need an upgrade at the 3rd WR next year just in case we see another injury. Maybe a healthy Thrash can get the job done but I think he probably still somewhat hobbled. |
Re: Offensive Coordinator
I too think Patten made a big difference. He wasn't doing alot stat wise, but teams had to respect him.

Joe Gibbs does not need an offensive coordinator unless he says he does. |

There are 24 teams in this league who need to figure out what they should do for next year. We are one of the teams that needs to figure out what to do this week.

I am not putting blame on Gibbs at this point, unless you want to say he should do something to force Brunell to look for other options occasionally. Patten is the reason I haven't given up on Jacobs yet, Patten proved himself on the biggest stage there is in football, and yet he can't produce for us? Something is not right with our offense, whether it's the QB, the playcalling, or the 3rd and 4th Recievers. Daseal made a post a month or so ago, he said while at the game Jacobs was getting open but Brunell wasen't basically giving the guy any consideration for a pass. It's much easier for a QB to just have to options especially one's he feels comfortable with, but he has to find a repore with Jacob's, I find it hard to believe the guy is NEVER open! |

The Tampa reciever dropping that ball in the end zone sealed the deal in Tampa, bottom line Brunell left them in the game, our defense won it. We can't rely on essentially 2 defensive TD's every game. |
Re: Offensive Coordinator
When I watched the Dallas game I saw Jacobs wide open quite a few times and no one even looked his way. We NEED to spread the ball around a bit more. Even if we dont break huge plays with these other players it keeps the defense honest.

Re: Offensive Coordinator
I believe sooner or later Patten would have broken through with some big games for us. It was inevitable with the way Moss was playing things would have opened up for him.
As for Jacobs, I've had his back for quite a while now but I'm on the edge with him now. I really didn't like the way he went after the ball on that INT last week, a very weak effort if you ask me. Coaches have said he's amazing in practice but he hasn't been able to translate that to the game for whatever reason. He couldn't even hold the job over Thrash. I don't think it's looking very good for him headed into the offseason. |
Re: Offensive Coordinator
we just need another santana on the other side.a few more good groceries will work thats for sure. all they need to do now is fine tune and free up some money for more players like some bookends on defense.
i like what u,m seeing from this team and besides we did play the #1 defense last saturday didn,t we. |
Re: Offensive Coordinator
Matty, I thought that about that play at first too, then they showed another picture and that INT was squarely on Brunell. I simply don't understand why we dont even ATTEMPT to get Jacobs the ball. We average throwing towards him like once a game, if that.

Re: Offensive Coordinator
We may want to revisit this discussion in a week or so. If we win again, hold off until the next week.
The reason the offense sucked against Philly was because Brunell wasn't healthy and didn't get a whole lot of practice in the week before. He didn't admit it after the Philly game (would be a strategic mistake to let the TB defense smell blood), but he's admitted it now. Against TB, he was healthier, but this week, he's completely healthy - I believe the results will show on the field against Seattle. Our offense has made enormous strides compared to last year. Even outside of Portis' and Moss' stellar stats for the year, we have big play ability, and most importantly, our red zone efficiency (in the second half of the season) is startling. I think the red zone efficiency has been the biggest source of improvement since it directly leads to 7 points. Portis, Sellers, Cooley, and of course Brunell have been key in improving that efficiency. I would tend to agree with those who say that its not the offensive system that needs to be revamped, but some of the personnel. A solid run blocking left guard, and a fast big man receiver, and we'd be set on offense, I think. |

It wasn't squarely on Brunell. Jacobs got out-muscled and out-hustled to the ball. Simple as that. Looking back, yeah, Brunell probably shouldn't have thrown the ball, but as an NFL QB, you expect your WRs to make a play sometimes! He never gets ANY separation from defenders in games. I don't know what his deal is. |

I'm not saying it wasn't a poor decision by Brunell, it was, but it wasn't a great effort on TJ's part either. The defender outplayed him for the ball. Top flight WR's don't let that happen. At the least, TJ needed to play the role of defender in that situation and try to knock the ball away. |

Just one thing about this statement. Aren't we NOW competing for a Championship? or do the Playoffs have nothing to do with that? |
Re: Offensive Coordinator
I just can't figure out why so many people try to second guess what Gibbs does. We have had how may loosing seasons while he was away and its taken him how many years to get us in the playoffs? If I would have ask anyone on this sight that if we were playing in the second week of the playoffs would we have had a succesful season? I bet 99% would have said yes and some would have been happy with a winning season and not making the playoffs. We have achieved more than most would have expected. So lets stop second guessing the coaching, QB, players and the ownership and start applauding our achievments. I for one after Saturdays game will applaud our achievments win or a loss but of course would rather applaud a win.

He MUST break up that interception. That was a completely weak attempt on that ball. Now Brunell should not have thrown it, but sometimes QB's make mistakes and it is up to the WR to play DB on some passes. TJ should have tackled that DB if necessary. |
