The Offense Was Too Conservative

I'm sorry, but that was a sad excuse for an offense. I tend to blame it on the conservative nature of the game-planning. What do you think?

I think fans should stick to cheering and let the coaches coach.

So I guess we shouldn't even discuss things here. I suppose we should just act as a conduit between Gibbs and the fans a la Extremeskins.

Re: This Offense Is Too Conservative

I'm sorry, but to get 3+ turnovers and lose is a disgrace. To get the kind of offensive performance we did in the first half is inexcusable. 3 first downs? 3 first downs? We weren't going against the Bucs, so we can't blame it on the defense we were playing.

Our defense limited one of the best offenses in the league to 20 points at their home. With the turnovers we should have been able to seal the deal.

So we should never talk about the team? What is the point of a discussion forum if the site exists just to re-hash what the coach says and say HTTR?

Yes the offense has stunk the last 2 weeks, however nothing is ever as simple as fans like to think. Injuries take their toll on even the best of offenses and we have had more than our fair share.

Re: This Offense Is Too Conservative
Where was this talk when we're were pounding teams and winning, Ramseyfan?
We weren't playing the same way. The last two weeks our offense has been playing what was often called, "full flaps offense." I agree. Moreover, we can't play the conservative run-always offense when our best run-blocking guard and star tailback are injured. Back then, it might have worked. With those injuries it wouldn't.

By the way, I was the one who was saying that we were a good team when everyone else had given them up for dead. Remember the "We are better than a .500 team" thread I started?

If you're saying that the games weren't being coached the same way, you're flat wrong. If you're saying that the players aren't quite executing like they were a few weeks ago, I would agree with that.

Look, I don't want to start an argument. I will keep my posts civil.

I'm not pouting. I started a thread about the conservative nature of our offense. I also have posted in other threads what a fantastic job Gibbs has done with this team. Anyone who has read my posts over the past few weeks knows that I have given the coaching staff a lot of credit.

That said, I'm not going to say everything is perfect, because it is not.

It's funny how easy it is to point the finger at the coaches and the playcalling.

It's the age old debate, what's the problem, the playcalling or the execution?

All I know is when we were shoving the ball down people's throats the playcalling wasn't a problem.

They were being coached the same way. I totally agree. But, as I said earlier, when your best run-blocking guard AND you star tailback are either out or totally banged-up, I think the game-plan should change.

It's been that way for weeks though.

We are what we are, a smashmouth football team.

If Brunell is dropping back 30-40 times, that's simply not our kind of game and doesn't play to our strengths.

Sheriff Gonna Getcha 01-14-2006 07:53 PM

Re: This Offense Is Too Conservative

Again, I would like to state for the record that Gibbs has done an outstanding job with the team. I would also like to remind people that I was saying that we were a good team when we were losing (so please don't peg me as a hater). I would also like to re-state that our playcalling might have been fine two weeks ago, but when you lose your best run-blocking guard and star tailback, you should re-focus your offense.

If I recall correctly (and I may not be), Portis wasn't seriously banged up until last week. I agree that Brunell dropping back 30-40 times usually doesn't play to our strengths, but when our running game was as bad as it was at the half (Portis averaged 2 ypc), it was time to re-focus.

I think we did re-focus in the 4th quarter. But, our 3rd quarter playcalling didn't reflect what Gibbs is so good at ... adapting.

Re: This Offense Is Too Conservative

I agree that we were a bit conservative in the first half. If we'd thrown the ball more...

However, if the OL had been fully fit, if we had a legitimate #2 receiver to pull ofthe double teaming, if we had a fully fit and effective DL, if we had a fully fit secondary, if we had someone who could kickoff into the endzone, if we could pin opponents deep with punts, if we didn't miss crucial FG's... if all that had been true, we'd have won the SB this year.

Fact is if's won't get us anywhere. If we'd thrown the ball more in the first half, maybe we'd have covered the spread, but basically the if's caught up with us today and we just never REALLY looked like winning. Just about everyone said we'd run out of steam and had to play on emotion alone. Sooner or later it catches up with you. To be honest, even if we'd won this one, we'd almost certainly have lost the next one. We are out of energy. Those guys, including the coaches, left everything on the field and I salute them.

I won't have a bad word said about JG, especially on the play calling. Next season with a good offseason program and maybe some fresh linemen on both sides, we are going to be strong. What JG has done in 2 years is amazing to me, especially considering the mess that Turner and Spurrier left us in after so many great years under Gibbs' first reign.

Go Joe, Go Skins and Go Ramseyfan and get drunk. Skins played a great season and gave us more than we expected. Enjoy the memories and look forward to more of the same.

You can talk about the team, just don't say something someone else doesn't want to hear, that's all.

Put on your cheerleader outfit and grab your pom pom's and tell everyone how great we were today. That should make a lot of people happy. :hater:

An honest opinion is rarely poorly timed, just poorly received. :spank:

Like I said, get drunk enjoys the rest of the playoffs (especially when Seattle get beat next week) and look forward to next season.

I think our offense improved this year. If they can improve by the same margin again next year we are a 12 win team if healthy. I think we should be proud that our team was in position to win this game most of the way and put forth a great effort. This was a true Gibbs team and I think we'll see something even better next year.

To me we need another WR because moss cant do it all by him self, because it looked as if we had one WR today because taylor jacobs sucks.

I didn't say everything was perfect either. I just happened to agree with Davey's post, then you jumped on me. If you don't want to start an argument, don't start it.

LRT 01-14-2006 08:06 PM

Re: This Offense Is Too Conservative

The basic problem is that without a legitimate second receiver (not to mention a third - or would that be greedy?) and with a big gap in the O-line, there just wasn't much of a "plan B" for us to fall back on. Gibbs did take quite a few risks in this game - going for it on fourth down several times, throwing deep on 4th and 2, etc. You could say that these were "too little, too late," but would they really have yielded better results if we had employed them sooner? Probably not, when you look at what they actually yielded when we used them.

What we need, now that the off season is here, is to work on getting at least two more legitimate receivers and a couple of solid back-up linemen. That will do more for this offense than anything else.

I was saying that today. Another deep threat at WR can really make a world of difference. Even during our 6 game winning streak, I always felt we were short of one more playmaker on our offense but that we did a great job with what we had. I can't feel too bad. Yes, I feel bad about today's game...but we're just not ready to take that next step yet. We still accomplished alot more than what people, even fellow Redskins fans expected, so I feel good about being a Redskins fan.

No problem. I can understand being frustrated with today's game, but we all have to take a step back and look at the big picture. When we do, we can see that we accomplished quite a bit.

Re: This Offense Is Too Conservative

NO ITS NOT SAD. We started running the ball had low success. We also have to recognize our O line is NOT healthy they arent opening the same holes as they used to. We switched to a more throwing offense but agin we only have ONE reciever its tougth to mount a potent offense with ONE reciever. We took the team as far as we could now its time to address the gaps and Get ready to DOMINATE THE LEAUGE NEXT YEAR......HELLLL YEAHHH. GIBBS IS GREAT HE HAS BROUGHT BACK HOPE AND SUCCESS TO WASHINGTON AND THE REDSKINS.......i cant wait for AUGUST.........LETS GO SKINS

Re: This Offense Is Too Conservative

It looked like to me that we made an effort to get Jacobs involved today which I believe was the smart move, but he really didn't do much, perhaps the verdict is closing in on him as another Florida system reciever?

Either way I want Ramsey in there next season. Brunell, if not for a fluke play to Moss, would have mustard 2 field goals, in 2 playoff games, if you want to count the Hall mis, OK, 3 field goals, the guy isn't going to get any better.

You can't play smash mouth football if your 1 dimensional, you have to make teams respect the pass, that didn't happen for us in the playoff's, that has to be rectified!

And last but not least, WHAT ON EARTH IS RAYMOR DOING FILLING IN AT GUARD FOR BROWN??????????????????

We would be better off putting a beach ball at right guard. I can't believe after 2 years Molinaro can't step in there? What does that say about Molinaro if Raymor is playing at guard ahead of him?

FRPLG 01-14-2006 08:11 PM

Re: This Offense Is Too Conservative

I am a big team supporter and was in Brunell's corner all year and this not in any way a diversion from that feeling but I think we need to get more agressive and I think with Brunell as QB we simply cannot do that. He plays smart. Too smart. He knows how to not turn the ball over much and that's by not taking any chances. problem is that skill wise he turns a lot of easier plays into more chancy plays. I like Brunell as a backup. And I like him with quality parts around him. But having one good WR and a banged up O-line is a recipe for disaster for this team. We depth at WR and anothe decent o-line. Raymer needs to go for sure.

i dunno about u guys but im tired of john hall, i dunno if his time is up or hes still injured but CMON! not one kick got past the ten yard line!....and to miss a 34 yrder is horrible this guys gettin paid for this crap, gettin paid a good amount at that, i mean, his best play today is when he recovered the football on the fumble on the kickoff........corey raymer just looked lost me.......hes a backup center and needs to stick to that!

Re: This Offense Is Too Conservative

I think there will certainly be an open competition for starting QB in training camp. Once again, unless we trade him, it will be Ramsey's job - or Campbell's - to win.

The big question, to me, is who can we get at WR and OL?
...the guy isn't going to get any better.
Good point. I think we saw the most we can expect from him this year. It's not enough to get to the next level. Sorta like Dilfer wasn't good enough to keep Balt on top and look at them since their SB. We need to look at that team and figure out what they did wrong. Hint: they didn't get a top quality QB to run the O. I love Brunell and think he does great at what a BACKUP should do. Protect the ball and give the defense the reigns to the game. We can't continue that pattern.

Offense never got hot until late in the 4th. Too many missed opportunities to score.

However, I'm very proud of the overall efforts of the coaches and players this year. We really got a great team here, one to build on for next season.... Hail SKIN!!!

I think we were too conservative until we went down a lot and then we turned it up but it was way too late. It should be the other way around, be as aggressive as possible, then call the dogs off.

Re: This Offense Is Too Conservative

Remember guys...that is why we got Jason Campbell. However, I think it was a great move to have Brunell starting for us this year. Believe me, you'll find that Campbell AND Ramsey benefited a great deal by watching a decent veteran QB run the offense. Sure, Brunell isn't a TOP QUALITY QB, but he is a quality QB who is going to give you a chance in the game. It was a smart move.

I agree somewhat. This was the playoffs, the time when we unleash everything we got. Conservative isn't gonna win here. Unfortunately our season is over, but next year we need to be better. I for one think we should run more no huddle outside of two minutes left in the half. Look at some great teams that do it. The colts for instance, they went no huddle for an entire game. Look at where they are at now.
