Offseason Moves (Merged Thread)
Brunell had a fine year. He isn't going to win us a Super Bowl, but I think he did a hell of a job this year! The question is who gets the first snap opening day?
|
Re: Who is our starting QB?
brunell led us to what we have. he is our starter next year. even as much as i like ramsey
|
Re: Who is our starting QB?
I don't even think Ramsey will be here next year, he'll probably ask for a trade considering how everyone lost faith in him after one game. But anything can happen. Either way, Brunell starts. If Ramsey leaves, Campbell might move up to second string?
...Unless we get some star quarterback off of waivers or something. Highly doubtful though. |
Re: Who is our starting QB?
Mark Brunell will be starting for us next year.
|
Re: Who is our starting QB?
2006-2007 starts the same as 2005-2006 ended!
1. Brunnell 2. P.Ram 3. Campbell |
Re: Who is our starting QB?
Brunell is our starter. Today we found out just how bad we miss Randy Thomas. Ray Brown can't get it don't and Raymer won't be back next year. Portis could not get any holes and with only Moss and Cooley "in the pattern" Brunnel did not have enough options.
|
Re: Who is our starting QB?
Brunell probably deserves to get a few more starts. Give him better protection and a few more passing options and our offense might be complete. Maybe with more options, our offense will become more aggressive. I'm taking a wait and see approach.
|
Where do we go from here?
Now it's the offseason for us. Where do we go from here? Who needs to be cut? Who deserves to stay? Where do we need to upgrade? Are there any spots on the coaching staff that might need an upgrade? What areas of the game do we need to improve on? What is our weakness? Who was great for us this year?
For me, I think everyone on the coaching staff did a hell of a job this year. The one thing i think we need is continuity on our coaching staff. But there are certain aspects of the game that we need to improve on. I for one, think Cory Raymer should be cut. We had him in there for Ray Brown at one point, and he stunk up the joint. As for our defense, we still need to improve our secondary. I like everyone that is back there, but they need to improve their game. Also, i think we have a glaring need for a #2 wide receiver. Teams have learned how to shut down Portis, Moss, and Cooley, and that's why we've been having trouble offensively as of late. We need more dependable options at wide receiver. Santana Moss has done above and beyond what we expected of him. He had a nice game today, and it would've been nicer had he caught that touchdown pass. Our defense still gives up the occasional big play, and they need to work on that. I thought when Shaun Alexander went down that our chances for winning increased tremendously, but we couldn't shut down Matt Hasslebeck. We had trouble rushing the passer some parts today. |
Re: Future Personnel/Team Moves (Merged Thread)
I'm pretty sure Raymer will be cut. He's old and slow. Why did we pick him back up? He was with San Diego there for awhile.
Start searching the market and the draft now for a strong, fast #2 WR, we've got a big hole there. |
Re: Future Personnel/Team Moves (Merged Thread)
I don't agree at all. Brunell can't take us all the way and he isn't getting any younger! You really want him running this team in next years playoffs? That's not going to work IMO. The great dilema is can Ramsey or Campbell take this very good team and make them great? I say Ramsey. Or Campbell?
|
Re: Future Personnel/Team Moves (Merged Thread)
Here's my off season wish list - in order:
1. We keep Lavar Arrington. 2. We get TWO decent back-up offensive linemen because Brown and Raymer will both be gone. 3. We get a starting WR and good third WR. 4. We get a good spare CB, not to take anything away from Ade... |
Re: Future Personnel/Team Moves (Merged Thread)
A healthy Brunell should be our starter, but I think if this year proved anything....he cant go a complete season anymore. SHOULD he be our starter next year, and get hurt, I dont think he should force himself back. Let someone else play a couple games so he can be healthy and effective.
|
Re: Future Personnel/Team Moves (Merged Thread)
On the QB front, I think that unless Ramsey or Campbell just step forward and claim the starting job in training camp, Brunell will start the season. But, I think Campbell will be getting himself groomed to take over, if the need arises.
|
Re: Future Personnel/Team Moves (Merged Thread)
Is it just me or does C. Raymer look a lot fatter than he used to?
|
Re: Future Personnel/Team Moves (Merged Thread)
if ramsey did not stay,
brunnel will surely be our starter, but we need to pass on the batton and train campbell very hard as shown today, our offense lacks depth, so we need to upgrade that area. wr, offfensive line men |

i dunno what youve been watchin dude, but what i know is ray bown played his butt off and did a hell of a job at that too.......but raymer......just plain awful......terrible |
Re: Future Personnel/Team Moves (Merged Thread)
1. #1 priority has to be a 2nd WR who can move the chains and make the occasional big play. David Givens, Brandon Lloyd, Quincy Morgan someone who won't cost much in $$ or picks.. Jacobs, Farris and Thrash are gone, Patten is a suitable #3..
2. Develop Jason Campbell.. The Redskins got extremely lucky with Brunell's health this season and likely won't be as fortunate again. Ramsey will be somewhere else next year (sorry Ramsey fans but he's gone) so we need Campbell to be ready to come in and at least manage the game and make plays when neccesary. We gave up a #1 pick for him so he needs to make good on it. 2. Pass rushing DE/3rd Corner.. Daniels came on late, but for most of the season he was a non factor rushing the passer.. Walt Harris was exposed as Elvis 'Toast' Patterson 2005 so he needs to get somewhere.. Time maybe for Ade to become the nickel corner or draft/develop someone for that role.. 3. Build OL depth.. Ray Brown played well, but at 42 it was clear he was not suited for extended playing time. Raymer was done the last time he was a Redskin, Wilson and Molinaro haven't developed as hoped. 4. Re-sign Betts long term.. It's clear that he is an integral part of the running game and with a continued reliance on Portis we need him to spell Portis to keep him fresh and healthy. 5. Continue to develop the offense.. It took 5-6 weeks for it to open up but it still regressed in the playoffs. Next year should be a return to glory for Gibbs in his 3rd and likely final season as he has 2 full seasons to know the league and build his game plans accordingly.. |
Re: Future Personnel/Team Moves (Merged Thread)
I agree with most of your points Paintrain. We need to resign Betts, we need o-line depth because Ray Brown is retiring, and Cory Raymer should be gone. I do believe that Walt Harris could be a good nickel corner, and hopefully Rogers stays healthy, because he has progressed well enough to be a #2. I saw why we keep Ade Jimoh every year, he has made progress as a corner this year when Springs was down, and he is a special teams beast. We do need depth though, because we saw how backups played when starters went down this year. I do think we need a pass rushing defensive end, Daniels was strong at the end of the year, but he wasn't all year long, and Wynn is valuable as a run stopper, but not much of a pass rusher. I think we could keep both, reduce their cap hit a bit, and sign a situational pass rushing lineman, someone like Robert Mathis for the Colts.

Offseason
this might sound crazy, but now that the season is over, i don't know about you guys but i'm really pumped about the offseason!!
|
Re: Future Personnel/Team Moves (Merged Thread)
everyone agrees that campbell is our qb of the future right? y not start him next season. yes brunell is good but is he really gonna win us a super bowl. kitna was still good when the bengals started palmer.

Re: Brunell & Other Offseason Moves (Merged Thread)
I love what Brunell did for this team but I just think our offense was as good as it could be with him at the helm this year. It needs to be better. If he can get better again next year then maybe he can take us to the next level but he isn't going to. Attention is needed here. Whether Ramsey is the answer or not I have no idea but I'd love to see him get another shot. He didn't get much of one this year. I don't think we go out and try to find someone else but I think it needs to be realized that Brunell is simply old and doesn't have the physical ability to do the little things that a real good QB does. You watch Brady or Manning they slide and make their own passing lanes. It's just an atheltic move they can do without even thinking about it. I can't think of Brunell doing this at all. When he needs a passing lane he rolls out or ends up getting sacked. We also need another quality WR so we never have to run a 1 WR set ever again. These should be outlawed by the league. It allows the D to put 9 in the box. Unacceptable. I think Brunell is a quality backup. In fact I think he can extend his career in the lague as a backup for three or four years but he simply isn't a SB QB and that's what we need. This team can be good again next year but it likely can't be any better with Brunell in there. As much as I love the guy and his toughness and hard work and good decisions we need to upgrade. Perfect example of a get you close QB.

Re: Future Personnel/Team Moves (Merged Thread)
I agree with many of those moves.
What about a new kicker? Hall just doesn't have it anymore. I knew from watching him in warmups he was going to be ineffective. |
Re: Brunell & Other Offseason Moves (Merged Thread)
I don't know what to do with Brunell.
On the one hand I think, "If this guy could just get another weapon on offense, he could be amazing." Given that he only had two viable receiving threats, it's quite amazing that he was able to do so well. Moreover, he took us to the playoffs for the first time in 6 years. On the other hand I think, "He's 35, inconsistent, and we need to build towards the future while Gibbs is still here." I really don't know what we should do. |

I really don't know what we should do.
I really notice when watching some other quality QBs how just well crappy Brunell looks in the pocket. They slide around and make passing lanes. They step up in the pocket to diminsh pressure. They calmly throw accurate passes. They just look a lot smoother. I think this is really a function of age because to me he looks a lot like another old QB: Brett Favre. Favre makes much worse decisions and would simply be a disaster on this type of team, but Brunell just doesn't look to me like he has the physical ability to be a SB QB. He looks like a good game manager with an adequate arm and a little wiggle left. He knows what to do and how to do it but he also knows what he can no longer do so he doesn't even try. It seems like drop back find the open guy or roll out. There's no hang in the pocket and make a play happen using a progression. And when he does check down it LOOKS like a check down rather than a smooth play. It seems almost manic. I am just struck by the difference between say Brady and Brunell. It is 100% obvious to me. Of course I know crap and maybe it is function of something else that I don't know about. If it is then I say I am an idiot and lets fix this other thing but from my years of watching this game I think Brunell just has a ceiling too low for a contending to able to reasonably expect to be in the hunt on a year to year basis. There's a reason Dilfer wasn't the QB in Balt long. He isn't that good. He did great that SB year keeping them out of bad situations but they knew they needed to get someone better in there to be successful long term(they just didn't find the right guy). I like long term planning. |
Re: Brunell & Other Offseason Moves (Merged Thread)
unless campbell shows huge strides, brunell will open the year as the starter. however, campbell will get atleast a little game time throughout the year. it is unlikely brunell will stay healthy enough to start all year again

I feel we need a QB that can make all the throws and can check down to a third reciever. Regardless of what Brunell did this season, he did nothing when it count's. If we lost because we were outplayed that's one thing, but Brunell didn't show up. Perhaps he's performing the way Gibbs want's him to? Who know's right now, but something has to change, and I think it start's with Brunell! And for all those who believe we need another WR to compliment Moss, well we knew that before the draft and came away with a 3rd string QB, it will be curious to see what we do with our next to nothing draft picks this year? |
Re: Brunell & Other Offseason Moves (Merged Thread)
if campbells starting to look pretty decent in the offseason, i say just start him....he'll only get better and the best way for a qb to learn is to play
they need a #2 receiver and backup o-lineman |

I don't much disagree with most of this post but I wouldn't call our draft pciks next to nothing. A second rounder will be a quality guy for us if choosen well. And good depth guys are always available in the 4th. It's not like all our picks are turds. |

Speaking of Lavar, did anyone notice him getting yanked when we gave up the first down on that screen to his side, I wonder who missed their assingnment? Matty I would love to get anything for Lavar at this point, I just don't believe after this season he has much value. Do you think it's wise to trade Ramsey at this point? |

I didn't even think we had a #2, still a late 2, other than Cooley in the third who do we have to show in the later rounds, or even the second round? I believe Jansen was our last real good second rounder, if there are others I am unaware. Dockery, I guess but he's not a world beater that's for sure. |

So if he runs the plays as he's told and takes a coverage sack, that's his fault? If the pocket folds and he's got nobody to throw to, and he dances and throws it away, you're blaming him? And where is that third receiver he's supposed to check down to, that you're alluding to? The reason "things start opening up on offense when he has done that" (taking chances downfield late in the game) is because the defense is typically playing a prevent, not because Brunell is magically deciding to "take chances"... I'm not saying he is a great QB at this stage in his career. But I think you are naive if you think that making a change at QB is going to fix the "woes" of our offense. Which, I might add, didn't seem too woeful before we entered the playoffs. Coincidence? How about fatigue. |
Re: Brunell & Other Offseason Moves (Merged Thread)
The front office and finding quality players in late rounds is where the Skins made their living in the 80's and 90's, and I've said it before, it's absolutely where we've SUCKED IT during the Danny Snyder reign.
I don't know much about Vinny Cerrato, but we need to get some Bobby Beathard-style help up there to the front office to make sure we're finding those diamonds in the rough. Cooley's a start. |

As for Ramsey who knows. I certainly wouldn't want to deal him, I think he could still have a shot at being the starter next year but it's all up to him. If he feels he doesn't have a realistic shot here he could ask to be traded. I guess we'll see how things play out. |

I would be surprised if a late 1st and possibly a later round pick was the best we could get. Seems to me most of the league still thinks he is a great LB. (I think he is but that's another matter.) The out of position stuff isn't new but it simply didn't fit so well here so far. Other teams will ignore that in lew of the great athleticism and game changing abilities. Unless of course they think we are going to cut him. Then we'll get nothing or next to nothing. It is probably the biggest off-season story for this team. |

So defense's are playing prevent when there only up 1 score? What defenses were the cowboys and the giant's in? Fatigue I am curious what does our offense have to be fatigued about? until the Tampa game [reg season] they did nothing, if anyone has the right to be tired it's our defense, and once again they overwhemingly outplayed our offense. The reason our offense took off when we hit the cowboy's the second time is because Portis and some of the other players had a meeting with Gibbs and told him we have to stop trying to run the clock out in the second quarter, and so he started to push the offense, and guess what, we went on a tare. But as the games became more important Gibbs became more and more conservative, or Brunell was to scared to take shots downfield, take your pick, because it's one or the other, fatigue had nothing to do with our offense, their one of the most rested offensive unit's in the league. |

Re: Brunell & Other Offseason Moves (Merged Thread)
I like many other fans love when preseason games start normally just to see the skins playing again, but this year I think there will be a lot more interest for once in how our backups play because I believe they will be lead by Campbell. His play in the preseaon will tell us a lot about the teams direction in the near future. Ramsey will get us a decent 3-4rd draft pick or possibly even a player for player swap. Wr is a position that must be addressed for a big bodied, decently speedy 3rd wr who has the ability to step up as a 2wr type threat when needed. O-line will have some back up adjustments with the likely cut of Raymer and the impending retirement of Brown. There's also the possibility of letting Harris go and get some new younger cbs in the fold, but the depth of the rest of our secondary is pretty solid. A consistent young de who can play the run and get push off the edge agains the pass at times would also be nice. And we need a new kicker like Conor Hughes out of UVA or Stephen Gostkowski of Memphis or hope Brandon Coutu of Georgia comes out early. None of these are the dramatic additions we've grown used to in recent seasons but these small adjustments could pay huge dividends next season if they get the right people into these positions of need.

Re: Future Personnel/Team Moves (Merged Thread)
I'm worried about CP's health. Since the 4th quarter of the Philly game, he's been utterly ineffective. Maybe it was the defenses, but we had no running game at all for nine straight quarters.
We have a desparate need at wide receiver. I would even consider Terrell Owens, but only for a one-year deal, with small bonus money, but heavy duty incentives. Basically make it so financially attractive for Owens to keep his mouth shut and be, well, if not a good teammate, at least not an awful teammate. We also need a tight end, and offensive line help. Medium term need is quarterback. We maybe get another year out of Brunell. But if they can be opportunistic and pick someone up in the 5th or 6th round, maybe take a chance. And, I realize this may be heretical, but let Arrington go. He wasn't even that good this year. He's undisciplined and hasn't really bought into Greg Williams' system. And given all the money they just threw at Williams, and the way Arrington's contract is structured, they need to spend that money on free agent additions. |
