Any update on Campbell?

Has anyone heard anything about the progress of Jason Campbell. Any feelings on when he will be ready, if ever?

Gibbs would not have traded a way a #1 to get a guy , sign him to a 5 year contract and have him sit 2 years. Judging from the preseason, I think this guy is a can't miss prospect.

Athletically: A 6'5 guy with scrambling ablility and a bullet for an arm. AND he prefers to stay in the pocket, where he can have great success staring over the D's. His throws look effortless.

Mentally: He is humble and hard-working out of Taylorsville, Mississipi. He definitely had a lot of vitamin C growing up, because he is Cool, Calm, and Collected.

Re: Any update on Campbell?

This is what gibbs said in his press conference today:

Continued Gibbs: "We see a lot in practice. My impression is that he's very accurate. I think he's going to be a guy that can really roam with a football. I think he's going to make plays with his feet. I think he has a sense of what the pocket is. He'll slide. He's going to be hard to sack because he's so big. We've seen a lot out of him.

"Now, he needs to play. We'll get into that. I laughingly told him, 'Take the hat off and throw it away. You're getting ready to go work. You're going to have to earn your money now.' Carlos Rogers was yelling at him, too. He said, 'I told my buddy that he has to start earning his money. The rest of us are out there playing.' Anyway, I think Jason had a year that was probably good for him. He got to hear it, see it and go through it. He probably learned a lot."

It sounds like he'll be playing alot more. I'm excited to see what he can do. Ramsey is definitely gone.

We drafted the guy, and all I hear is what he's not.....if the coaching staff (and since everyone in hear live a die on Gibb's word) then we should believe that this kid has sit back a year, not thrown into the fire and learned something, he's out first rounder behind rogers last year.....its time we put faith in our future.....lets base it on the fact that Gibb's think he's ready

Re: Any update on Campbell?

Here's a link to the complete article on what Gibbs thinks of Campbell - it's about halfway down, first half is about Brunell.

Redskins.com: Gibbs on Campbell

It sounds encouraging. Not to read way to much into it, but it sounds to me like Gibbs has had him learning alot this past year and he might be in soon. I'd expect to see alot more of him during preseason games in the very least. Actually beating out Brunell/Ramsey for the job looks like a bit of a long shot, but who knows.

I'd love to see someone young and with alot of potential leading the team. I know Brunell did a great job this season and he offers the experience and maturity of an older player, but it always bothers me in the back of my mind that we know he's not around much longer. He's just a short-term solution.

I can't wait for the day when the Redskins return to the status of a real NFL powerhouse with CONSISTENCY at as many positions as possible. That means a franchise QB who will be with us most of his career, not shuffling someone new in every season.

I think that might be asking just a tad too much of a first year starting quarterback. I think the long term success of the franchise probably depends on Jason Campbell, but in all likelihood he will not enter into the fray next season and lead the team to the Super Bowl. I suspect that if Campbell is starting next season then the team might struggle and even miss out on the Playoffs. It will be in subsequent seasons that we will really reap the benefits of starting Campbell. I could be wrong, I mean Eli Manning and Chris Simms (2nd and 3rd year qbs respectively) did lead their teams to division championships (and first round losses) this season. I just hope that we as fans can look down the road far enough to see that if Jason Campbell is starting - and probably struggling - it is for the long-term good of the team. Hopefully we will not get down on him and start calling for Brunell after he throws a couple of INTs and loses us a game...I worry that doing so would almost certainly hinder his development...hopefully I'm worrying for no reason here and the team can lean on Portis for another year until Campbell is really ready to step up. I guess this is all premature until we find out who the starting QB is going to be. Though I love Mark, the more I think about it the more I think that it really needs to be Campbell. We shall see.

I think they made it to the playoffs because Gibbs decided to take the ball out of his hands.

You can add Ben Roethlisberger to the list with Eli Manning and Chris Simms. Roethlisberger is definitely an exception, not the rule, as most QBs don't have a 98.6 QB rating their first two years.

I'd say Simms and Manning haven't been spectacular, but their teams DID make it to the playoffs and I don't think either are solely to blame for their teams getting knocked out of the playoffs.

There are alot of teams starting young QBs, some with very little success. Alex Smith has been absolutely destroyed in his starts, though he is surrounded by a lousy team.

I think we have the talent in place in all the other positions on the offense (gratned we need a few good signings this offseason) that we wouldn't be throwing Campbell to the dogs (a la Alex Smith). You never know how he's going to do until you try him out, and I for one wouldn't mind seeing him sooner rather than later.

I trust whatever decisions Coach Gibbs makes, as he knows a hell of alot more about quarterbacking than I do. I guess my point is I really don't see any compelling reasons to NOT start Campbell sooner rather than later.

I think I'm pretty impressed with 23 TDs and 10 INTs from Mark Brunell this year, considering he had no second WR to speak of. If you add a second WR who is worth a damn, I could see 28 TDs and 12 INTs next season.

I don't see Campbell performing that well in his first year. Campbell may be capable of getting to 28 TDs due to the accuracy that Gibbs trumpets. But a young QB starting for his first year in the league is likely to throw a lot more than 10-12 INTs.

I will certainly keep an open mind and give Campbell a chance to show he deserves to start, but at this point I feel very comfortable with Brunell as the starter next season. I firmly believe our vet QB is not the problem keeping us from getting to the Super Bowl. In my opinion, the primary problem is WR.

Brunell was the #13 ranked QB this season with a passer rating of 85.9. Is that mind-blowingly spectacular? No. Nobody is arguing he's Joe Montana or Peyton Manning, just saying he did a pretty good job, which he did.

57% on completions, and most impressive is 23 TDs to only 10 INTs. That's a better ratio than Tom Brady, Trent Green, Jake Delhomme, Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger.

His stats prove him to be efficient and relatively low-risk. You play to your teams strengths. Our strength was running the ball, as is many teams. Doesn't mean the QB is worthless or "inadequate." This is a run-first team and probably always will be as long as Gibbs is coach. If you're looking for a gunslinger like Peyton Manning, find another team.

Re: Any update on Campbell?

Brunell did have a solid year. What scared me, though, were some of his bad decisions in the playoffs. That interception at Tampa could have cost us the game, and that intentional grounding at Seattle was not a good play for a veteran to make. He seemed too tired at the end.

That said, he'll be a great mentor for Jason Campbell whenever Coach Gibbs makes the switch next season.

I think you're right on that Campbell could throw more TDs but probably more INTs too - just goes with being the new guy and adjusting to the NFL.

Obviously winning the Super Bowl is the ultimate goal no matter who the player is. I guess I've always taken exception to the attitude that we'll try to win at any cost, even at the cost of building a strong, long-lasting team. Doing what the Raiders did and throwing together an amazing team for a one-year run is just disheartening. Look at them now.

I'm much more for long-term team growth than hanging on to Brunell in the hopes of snagging a Super Bowl win and having the team disintegrate afterwords. That's what makes the Patriots impressive is their ability to compete like they do year in and year out.

I don't think anyone will argue that Brunell is anything but a short-term solution. He's 36 now and will be 37 once then next season starts - he has very little time left to be effective.

I just dont see campbell starting next year. I think Gibbs will try to milk every last ounce out of MB because he thinks MB gives the skins their best chance to win. Gibbs has assembled a playoff team and he will add more parts in the offseason, he's not going to take that playoff team and turn it over to an unproven qb. MB is the man until further notice.

True Gibbs never says anything negative about a player, but conversely he's never effusive in his praise for a player either just for the sake of saying it. He never came out and praised Ramsey, for example, like that. For him to be that excited and specific (accuracy is a big thing with him and part of the reason they don't trust Ramsey) makes me think that he's seen things that will bode really well for the future of the franchise at that position.

I don't know that Campbell has the speed/playmaking ability like a Vick or Young, he maybe a slower version of McNair back in his day.. He's got decent speed for a QB (4.6, 4.7) but he is by no means a blazer..

My point about Brunell is the same as this guy's. This season was the best he could be. We can't count on getting this out of him again. I don't care if his receivers are Jerry Rice and Art Monk. We need to have a plan on how to have a better QB. Not just a solid guy but a good guy who allows us a thicker more advanced playbook.

What Gibbs said about Campbell gives me alot of hope. I can't wait to see Jason play next year in preseason. We didn't really get a chance to see too much of him play this past preseason. Could be a situation where Campbell gets moved to #2 next year, and the Redskins sign a veteran qb at #3.

To whoever said that Brunell just had an adequate year, I humbly disagree. Brunell had a solid year this year. Yes, it wasn't a GREAT year, but it much more than just adequate. He'll be back next year starting for us again, and hopefully when we have another solid receiver for Brunell to throw to, we'll see that Brunell has alot of football left in his 35 year old arm.

I really don't know, I'm not ready to say he absolutely cannot take the team all the way, and as I said in another thread I don't think it's all on his shoulders either.

Brunell's level of play seems to coincide with how the entire offense as a unit is playing. He's not a guy that can carry a team on his back, but when the offense is playing well he's a great compliment. Placing all the blame on Brunell when the offense struggles is a cop-out in my opinion. The offense as a whole struggled in the playoffs from the offensive line to the backs to the receivers.

I tend to agree but I think the QB position is one that simply can make everything else better. I do think if we put everything in the right place and everything goes perfectly maybe we can get to a SB with him and who knows what happens but I'd rather have a comprehensive solution that gives us a shot consistently to be a SB level team. Not just when everything is perfect. I know we're not going to get a Manning type QB but I think if we had a Delhomme level guy we'd be better off. The biggest problem is that I do think the long term answer is Campbell. At least I have no reason to thinks it is not. The question then is do we stick with Brunell for probably one more year or is there a short term upgrade? We probably stick with Brunell but I thinkithat probably "dooms" us to another year like this one. I guess I'd be ok being "doomed" to another a good year like this but I think we could be good enough to be a SB team next year and I don't want to squander it.

Brunell was clearly hurt last year. Even Gibbs has said so. While we definitely upgraded the talent around him this year I think towards then end of the season he looked much more like the QB he was last year than the QB he was earlier in the year. I think it is reasonable to expect that a 35/36 year old QB is going to wear down again like that.

But that is exactly the point. In all likelihood we can't have it both ways. You take Campbell and you probably will struggle but it is the best thing for the long term good of the franchise. You take Brunell and you might get a comparable year - though that is far from guarenteed - but you delay Campbell's maturation. I guess the halfway solution - and perhaps the one the Skins are most likely to pursue - is to trade Ramsey, go into the season with Brunell and if he perfoms comparably to this season and you are winning you stick with him, but if he struggles or gets injured you go with Campbell. Though I didn't closely follow the situation in Jacksonville a few years back, I seem to remember that they followed a similar formula (I think Brunell got heard in like week three) in developing Byron Leftwich. Where it gets dicey is if you are winning some games and Brunell is playing average - say you are 5-6 again - then when do you bring in Campbell? The Giants went throw that with Kurt Warner and Eli Manning a few years back. Manning came in and absolutely bombed, but they went with him and he played much better (at least until the end of the year) this season. It wouldn't be Washington without a quarterback controversy, though.

Does anyone have any info on QB's who sat for two seasons? I seem to remember that Chad Pennington might have gone something like two years before starting because Vinny Testeverde was winning games in New York. I think McNair only went one year and like I said earlier I think Leftwich went a year and 3 games...just curious what sort of precedent we are looking at. It does strike me as rare for a first round pick to sit for two seasons in the salary cap era, though.

Also - and I again preface this by saying that I was a big fan of Brunell this season - but in looking at those 23 touchdowns how many were to Cooley or Sellers in the flat from two yards out? Just something to bear in mind, stats don't tell the whole story. That said, Brunell certainly did not make the type of mistakes that cost the team games and thus had them in position to win every game except the first meeting with the Giants. I guess it is not too crazy to believe he could do it again and if he does no one will be happier than me. I am not bashing Brunell, I am just seriously concerned about the long term prospects of the team. Are you sacrificing the future to try to make one more run with Brunell and if so is it rational to believe that Brunell is capable of making that run? WE DON'T KNOW, that is what is scary. Luckily we have Gibbs making those decisions, not us, so in that we can take a good deal of comfort.

Re: Any update on Campbell?

I think we all respect what Brunell has done this year. Could he take us to the SB? Its possible, but in my opinion not probable. I'm not sure that he can make the type of plays w/ his arm and/or legs that a Delhomme, Rothlisberger (?), Hassellbeck, and even Plummer can and did this past weekend. That is the thing. As we saw this weekend, the intensity picks up, and in most cases the qb is the one that has got to make the plays or some plays during the game to win it. Yes, Dilfer and B. Johnson did win the sb, but i think that is the exception not the rule. Brad Johnson's a pretty good qb too.

Re: Any update on Campbell?

Gibbs believes in sitting QB's before they play. He doesn't believe that Jason watching is setting back his progress. That's the way he does things...we need to trust that coach Gibbs will put Campbell in when he's ready to play. If Gibbs feels that Campbell is ready to play at a level comparable to Brunell he will play him and if he doesn't he will sit again.
WE DON'T KNOW, that is what is scary. Luckily we have Gibbs making those decisions, not us, so in that we can take a good deal of comfort.
You know its probably the easy way out but I agree 100%. I think Joe has done a great job evaluating talent and making personel decisions, for example,

Getting Gregg Williams
Taylor or Winslow Jr., (funny but Sean has more TD' s than the Soldier)
move up to get Cooley,
Moss for Coles,
Peirce or Marshall
Smoot or Carlos Rogers
giving Brunell another shot
so I will wait to see what he says, I mean so far he has been money. I just think that Brunell with even more weapons and the same defense gives us the best shot, but god, I would love to see JC get in there, especially after us losing a 1st round pick for him ... it will be a tough decision man ...
The problem with Brunell being a "compliment" to the offense is he's the quarterback. The quarterback is supposed to lead the team, and supposed to be guy who can make the plays when they need to be made. Brunell did that in the first Dallas game, and hasn't done it since. The only thing he did exceptional this year statistically, was his TD/INT ratio. His yards and touchdowns were average.

The problem, as I've said before is, Brunell isn't a game loser, but he's not a game winner either. I agree, that the offense and Brunell seem to perform about the same during games, but Brunell is the leader of the offense. That's why it's on his shoulders.

It's hard to blame the skill position guys when Portis broke the Skins single season rushing records, Moss broke the receiving record, and Cooley surpassed the most catches by a tight end, but Brunell came nowhere close to breaking any Washington passing records.

That is why MB is the starter and PR is not, MB is not a game loser and PR seems to be. MB does not need to be a game winner, he just needs more than 1 WR that is a legit threat so he does not need to be pressured into trying to be a game winner. Lots of teams have won titles with "`1wont lose the game QBs", if the skins give MB the weapons he can become one also.

Brunell made plenty of big plays during the course of the year, saying he only made big plays during the first Dallas game is really understating things.

Other than the season Rypien had in '91, Gibbs has never had a really big time QB. Even in '91 the offense was still heavily centered around the ground game.

Personally I don't think we need a Favre type of QB to win games, Gibbs' formula calls for a QB to play smart and efficient above all, and that's what MB did this year.

Exactly. I'd also like to ask, what did Mark Rypien and Doug Williams ever accomplish when they weren't playing for Gibbs? Friggin nothing. Gibbs has shown that he doesn't need a Joe Montana. He does need a Posse though. There were always several good receivers in his offense, a good line, and a good RB. We have the line and the RB. We need the WRs.

If Campbell can come in and be better than Brunell, then that's all the better. But I think Brunell has what it takes right now.

Turnovers are the key to winning games. We can talk QB rating and all these other stats all we want. But he only threw 10 picks all year. That's great.
