Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
I'd also have to put Ernst Byner on the BEST LIST over your bottom 3...he was consistent for us for the most of the time he was here and helped us win a SB and is now back coaching for us.
|
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
I would add Cornilus Griffin to the Best List also, he should have ben a pro-bowler last year, and if he would have stayed healthy for this season I believe that he could have ben a pro-bowler for us this year also...
|
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
I would have to give Griffin one more year to put him in the top 5.
|
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
deion has to be the biggest bust, because along with deion came all the hype.i would also have to add bruce smith to the bust list.did nothing in dc but hang on just to get the sack record.other busts stanley richards,
|
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
dont forget about George??????????????
|
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
I think Sellers has to go on the top 5 list - he's clutch!
|
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
Stanley Richard had to be the biggest of them all, he did absolutley nothing with the Chargers and for the life of me I can't see what they saw in him. Runner up for me was James Washington from the Cowboys. Another POS.

Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
MY TOP 5
1 John Riggins 2 Ken Harvey 3 Larry Centers 4 Ernest Byner 5 by default, Marcus Washington / but needs more years BOTTOM 5 1 Dana Stubafield 2 Dieon Sanders 3 James Washington 4 Dan Wilkinson 5 Mike Barrow |
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
If we're talking about free agents, Byner can't be on the list, he was aquired through a trade.

did not know that, thought we signed him. |
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
If we want to talk about the best trades the Skins have made, Byner would be very close to the top of the list. He was traded for the legendary Mike Oliphant. I think the Browns are still smarting over that genius of a deal.
Despite being primarily remembered for "The Fumble," Byner actually went on to have an extremely successful career after the 1987 season when it happened. After spending another year with the Browns, he was traded to the Washington Redskins prior to the start of 1989 season, for running back Mike Oliphant. In his 5 seasons with Washington, Byner was selected to play in the Pro Bowl twice (1990, 1991) and won a Super Bowl ring with the team in in the 1991 season. In that season's Super Bowl XXVI, in 1992, he caught a touchdown pass in the first quarter, and the Redskins won, giving him the World Championship he could not win with the Browns.
|
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
MY TOP 5
BOTTOM 5 1 Dana Stubafield 2 Dieon Sanders 3 James Washington 4 Dan Wilkinson 5 Mike Barrow
I don't know if I would add Dan Wilkinson to that list. While he wasn't the player we expected, he didn't exactly live up to expectations in Cincinnati, either. So I'm not sure what we as fans were hoping for in Washington. That said, he wasn't a complete bust, and he wound up staying for several seasons as a solid, if unspectacular contributor. He wasn't a superstar, but if you remember our run-stopping abilities in the 1997 season, it was certainly an improvement. I can think of other free agent busts who were worse ... Remember Al Noga? Donovan Greer? Jacquez Green? |
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
Wilkenson was traded for. As for trades, The 2 1st round picks we got for sean gilbert from the panthers worked out well.
|
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
I think a top 5 list needs to include Joe Jacoby
|
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
1 John Riggins
2 Joe Jacoby 3 Wilbru Marshall 4 Neil Olkewitz 5 by default, Marcus Washington / but needs more years 6. Joe Thiesman (Signed him out of CFL but had to gain rights thru trade with Miami) BOTTOM 5 1 Stanley Richard 2 Deon Sanders 3 James Washington 4 Bruce Smith 5 Mike Barrow 6 Duane Thomas |
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
A straight up trade for Mike Oliphant if I remember rightly. I think we got slightly the better of that trade. :laughing2
Is it just me? There were no replies after Matty's post about Byner when I replied but now there are 4. :insane: |
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
SHAWN SPRINGS man!!! The guy led our team in interceptions and sacks last season! Further, he has proven to be a tough, phyisical, shut-down corner. When he came here there were a lot of question marks about this guy, but he has definitely provided the answers with his superior, pro-bowl quality play.

Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
A guy that didn't stick around long but was a force on the D-line and made plays in the back field was Daryl Gardener. Why did we let him go?

As I recall he only signed a one-year contract with us, then wanted a long-term deal for more than the front office thought he was worth. |

He had attitude issues, in a nutshell. |
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
Gardner also had a back problem. I think he road the bench in denver the following year.

he was injury prone, the broncos signed him and he ended up being benched and insulting the coaching staff etc daily in the media there. while he was here i think 5 games into the season he said he was looking foward to next year i think (Was that him?). the skins got one great year out of him, but he was in no way worth the risk of a long term deal. |
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
Lets not forget Mark Carrier. He came the same year as Deion and I knew we were in for a long season. Hell Sanders was damaged goods from the start and was way past his prime. Carrier was just not there!

Speaking of F/A busts, don't forget Carl Banks, Al Noga, and Leonard Marshall. |
Speaking of F/A busts, don't forget Carl Banks, Al Noga, and Leonard Marshall.
Carl Banks and Leonard Marshall were done long before they came to the Skins. Al Noga ... I remember when Ritchie Petitbon was asked why they let Fred Stokes go. He said something like, 'Fred wanted more money, so we signed somebody better.' That somebody was Al Noga. Oh boy, what a doosie he was. |
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
A fwe great FA's that are not so far listed:

Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
1. Reggie Roby (best ever...)
2. WIlber Marshall 3. Henry Ellard 4. Chris Dishman ( came in and made the probowl with green. its rare to have two corners in the probowl tthe same year. ) 5. Here are a couple of names that might not have been FA pickups D. WIlliams(hey, he was magical for one day and what a day it was) Chip Lohmiller(not sure if he was drafted or not) Gerald Riggs(monster in the redzone) the worst: James washington Trotter Deion Alvin Harper ok i cant think of anyone else so i will say chad morton. |

Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
Cris Dishman? The guy's talent straight up disappeared after one year here. He went from borderline pro bowler to barely making the team in one off season it seemed. They almost cut him in his second year.
|
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
borderline probowler? He made the probowl... he was borderline his second year and the 3rd he sucked, but thats when we got bailey.
|
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
Dishman had a great year in '97 but he was horrible in '98 and gone after that.
I remember how weird it was, he really went in the tank in '98. |
borderline probowler? He made the probowl... he was borderline his second year and the 3rd he sucked, but thats when we got bailey.
He shouldn't have made the bowl that year. He made it on previous rep mostly. Matty's right. His second year even during pre-season everyone talked about how bad he had gotten. It was like he had been on the juice or something and then stopped and couldn't do anything. Just all of a sudden. Weird. Never seen an athlete do that before or since. |
Re: Top 5 Free Agent Signings / Bust By The Redskins All Time
Dishman, incidentally, is now a coach in NFL Europe

I remember how weird it was, he really went in the tank in '98.
The guy was really playing on his last leg when he was here. I remember seeing a special on FOX with Dishman and Darrell Green. The old man had grays all over what little hair he had left. He was really a stop-gap measure. I don't think anyone expected him to be a long term solution. |
