yeah I wonder how many people in normal jobs would get suspended or fired if tested as much as these guys do for trivial things like some weed.

probably not once it was agreed on and submitted and signed off on by the nfl. Its like when the MD basketball player was drafted top 5 (number 1?) and OD'd a week later. You're just stuck with it.

There's irony here. When those Philly fans bood the Donovan McNabb draft pick, it was because they wanted the team to draft Ricky Williams.

The New Orleans Saints (I [i]think[/i] this is true) gave up two draft choices to the Redskins to trade up to get Williams, over coach Mike Ditka's objections. I believe that was the year we drafted Lavar Arrington and Chris Samuels.

You got it semi right. Ditka was the one who wanted to make the trade and had final authority on such matters. Before the draft he stated that he would trade his entire set of draft picks to move up and get Ricky Williams.

The trade was:
Redskins #1 (5 overall)

Saints #1 (12 overall)
Saints #3 (71 overall)
Saints #4 (107 overall)
Saints #5 (144 overall)
Saints #6 (179 overall)
Saints #7 (218 overall)
Saints 1st rounder in 2000
Saints 3rd rounder in 2000

We of course then traded a bunch of those picks to move up to #7 and take Champ.

While I think it is stupid to keep using, this really makes me sad. I'm a big fan of Ricky. I've liked him for a while now, it saddens me that he can't put down the weed long enough to get it together and tote the rock. I thought he had a pretty decent year and I would have liked to have seen him get his career and life back together.

Just heard on Mike and Mike that it's considered failing if you don't show up -- rumor has it he's hanging out in India doing stuff during this part of the off-season and didn't show up for testing. Equally as stupid, but he hasn't necessarily gone back to weed.

i actually lkiked ricky, i remember i think our second yr with spurrier that yr the dolphins were a wildcard team.........i beleive that if ricky never left, and doplhins had a decent quarterback they could still be playoff caliber...........i really liked ricky too.....hes jst an idiot......i hope he gets another chance to tuen his life around

I got a question. And some may think I've been toking up with Ricky after reading this question. Could the Redskins trade Patrick Ramsey to the Dolphins for Ricky Williams, then cut Ricky and clear cap space?

I know trades like this happen all the time in the NBA, but I don't know if the same rules could apply to the NFL.

I know that when trading for someone you don't have to pay their bonus, so by cutting them, you wouldn't get hit with the cap penalty.

Maybe TAFKAS and I have been smoking too many fattys and playing Madden........

no, when a team lets a player go (cut or trade) they immediately get a cap hit for the remaining signing bonus. the new team get a guy with no gaurantees in his contract, so keeping or dumping him doesn't really make a difference. If you trade and release or just cut a guy, you're hit with his release fee either way, and both teams end up with a player that can be cut at any time without penalty.

though no player would ever want to be traded without getting a new contract.
