Jets Moving up?

Vic Carucci, of NFL.com, reports one rumor making the rounds at the NFL Combine was the New York Jets trading with the Houston Texans to acquire the No. 1 pick so they can select a quarterback to replace QB Chad Pennington. As the rumor goes, the Jets supposedly covet former USC QB Matt Leinart

I don't see how they could do that... the texans would lose bush at #4... they could get a great LT though...

I agree if the Jets are in worse cap trouble than we are I do not see how they can do that...

Re: Jets Moving up?

Matt Leinart is going to be something especial. I would certainly take him over Young as my QB or any other QB because he played 4 years for a top flight program under an NFL coach. I would trade two 1st rounders and a 2nd and a 3rd rounder.

mooby 02-27-2006 02:35 AM

Re: Jets Moving up?

it's not like #4 is a bad spot, there's bush, leinart, young, and d'brickashaw available, there is an abundance of talented players.

That Guy 02-27-2006 03:11 AM

Re: Jets Moving up?

Leinhart is the most polished QB coming out in a long time... vince hasn't done much of anything out of a 3-step drop, so he'd probably be helped the most by sitting a year.

I agree he'd probably be worth it, but i don't see why the texans would make that trade. They could move to #2 maybe, but i doubt they'd give up a shot at the 3 elite players this year.

The jets could get ramsey and DB thi year, and after sucking again (3/5 of their current oline starters are going to be gone) they'd be in prime position to draft quinn next year.

he's good, but ML and bush are on a completely different level, and vince isn't far behind.

lets say cap wise the jets could pull this off, what the heck could they offer houston in a trade to make this work?

it'd have to be crazy... like 5 picks and JA.

then the texans could get 3 starting olinemen, a good rb, and a good TE in their first 5 picks... that's a LOT of protection.

Even if it was true I doubt it would cause him to fall that far.

George had issues with maturity and an all around crappy attitude. I don't think it had much to do with intelligence, the guy did put up some quality seasons here and there.

Regardless... this is a multiple choice test... you should be able to guess and average 12.5 out of 50.

young got a 16... 19 is average, his interviews were fine and i don't think any teams care that much about wonderlic scores. last year someone got a perfect, it doesn't mean he'll ever be worth jack as a QB though.

Exactly - when it's all said and done no one puts too much stock into the score when there at the draft table ready to pick. Trust me, Young could score 1 on that test and would still be a top 3 pick.

Young could have gotten a negative wonderlic score and NFL teams still wouldn't be able to get what he did against USC outta their minds.

I'm sure you're right - I think that article said the only number the teams care about is 41-38. Still, the 38% average is kind of shocking. It really shouldn't be (shocking, that is), given how little these guys are forced to do academically.

Re: Jets Moving up?

That would be a great move for the Texans. They don't need Reggie Bush. Their best player is RB Dominack Davis. I'm not sold on Bush being a every down back. He is too little. He is small like Warrick Dunn. Whoever gets him, it will be a mistake. The Texans need offensive line and defensive line help. David Carr is not bad if he can stay off his back. They have good receivers (Andre Johnson, Corey Bradford and Jabar Gaffney). The Texans gave up more sacks than anyone. They need to draft linemen.

Well, the Texans need many things. Bush may not be the fit for them, but I definitely think he'll be an impact player somewhere.

Re: Jets Moving up?

It may be a good idea to move away from the number one pick. But, if they could package Davis and some picks to get a couple first rounders it would be a very productive draft. I dont think you can pass on Bush. He is an unbelievable talent, size or not. He will bulk up on an NFL regament, plus you can not teach speed and quickness, and vision. he has them all. I have never seen a player come out of college with the talent this guy has. He can run, he can catch like a receiver and has the escape ability of no one I have ever seen, maybe a Barry Sanders, but has twice the speed. It would be a mistake to pass on him.

On the Vince Young thing, I dont care what kind of talent you have a QB, if you cant read a defense, or pick up the plays you will not succeed in the NFL. Look at Vick, he went to college on athletism and he is below avg QB in the NFL. Heath Shuler was suppose to be next best thing until everyone found out he was a stupid as the goal post. Leinert may be the #1 QB taken, but I am not sold on his arm, he just doesn't seem to have the arm strength needed to complete tight balls in the NFL. I think Cutler might be the best overall QB coming out of the draft. Has the brains and a GUN for an arm.
just my thoughts.

i doubt bush is faster than sanders, at least in comparision to the competition he'll face. culter has an arm, but he makes bad decisions. brees and brady have weak arms and they're doing fine in the nfl, so i don't think leinhart is going to fail based on his arm.

jeff george and ramsey also both had guns for arms ;)

No way in hell Barry Sanders wasn't even close in the speed catagory with Bush. that is crazy talk. Bush runs like a low 4.2 40, Berry at his best may have been mid 4.3s. Where do you see Breeze and Brady as having weak arms? Brady can rifle the ball with the best of them, Breeze I really can't say, haven't seen enough of them. Dont even bring George in the picture, we all know what his problems were, Talent not one of them. Ramsey never had a true shot with a real NFL coach. and dont say Gibbs gave him one, because he didn't.

hi, before spewing crap, please check facts. Bush has a 4.40 to 4.42 40 time, and that's a far cry from a 4.2.

Brees and Brady's arm are around the strength of leinhart's, they were both knocked for that, but it hasn't seemed to hurt them.

Don't know were those times came from, but just watching the guy run I would be absolutly shocked if he wasen't in the low 4.3 range at least.

And yes Bush is much faster straight line speed than B. Sanders Sanders ability to cut is what set him apart from the rest, he wasen't a slow back by no means, but he didn't have elite speed like Bush either, Bush has Gale Sayers type ability.

I think Guy is right: Reggie Bush 40 times

Bush has that Sanders elusiveness, though. I haven't seen him play enough to say he is going to make those same type of ridiculous, cross-country-three-times runs that Sanders used to, but he has potential.

I would take Cutler over all the QB's if I was drafting one, part of Cutlers problem's in college is that he had a horrible offensive line which put him into some forced throws. As for Leinert I am not as big on the guy as others, probably my biggest concern for him is his durability, he looks like a guy who would have a hard time surving in the NFL. The thing that would scare me with him is the fact that he plays with superior talent in an NFL type scheme with superior coaches.

that's all true... i may jut be re-acting to all the "culter is the best QB by far" crap some people are spewing CONSTANTLY (maylock is the worst about it), but everything i've seen he looks good, but not great. It was a great idea to do the full combine and i liked his interviews, but in the all star game whitehurst played much better and he's a possible 3rd-5th round guy. I saw one other game of his i think and wasn't really impressed. His Oline was beyond redemption though.

i'm thinking low tier starter, charlie frye type production. I wanted to pick him up back when he was still projected as a 5th rounder (cause that was WAY too low), but he's since moved up to where the skins probably need to fill other needs :/

ingel martin looked great at the combine though, so i guess that's my new low round qb pick since whitehurst moved to the mids ;) I like maurice drew too (RB/returner) and leon washington as underrated RBs, and hass/orr as underrated WRs.

Are you crazy. Man your missing out on life. Look we got the pool championships coming up and MetRX strongman. And who can forget the World Series of Poker (middle-aged men with fashion sense). Man the offseason rules.

I mean baseball is alright, but the Orioles are a tease. The Wizards can get into the playoffs but will probably have to face Detroit or Miami in the 1st round. The Terps can't win a game and are gonna get screwed out of the tournament again. Don't watch hockey. The Olympics are finally over. Not into Lax but would be nice to see a team I like win. And when is Freddy Adu gonna do something cool enough to make me watch MLS?

Anyway I like all 3 QB's but I think that if all 3 of them are available you have to take Leinart first. The guys a proven winner and on top of that hes marketable (which is important for some teams like Houston, New York, Arizona). After that I think you can take Cutler or Young, its just a matter of offensive style, but Leinart should go first in terms of QB's. If the Jets move up I think they should draft Bush and trade for Ramsey. That would make me happy. Plus its tradition. We always exchange something or someone with the Jets.
