Clayton: Redskins Plan to Sign Randle El and Lloyd

This is the latest (Sat. 2:15 a.m.) from ESPN's John Clayton.

The Redskins came out swinging. They made contact after midnight Friday with 49ers defensive end Andre Carter, Rams safety Adam Archuleta, Chiefs quarterback Todd Collins and Steelers receiver Antwaan Randle El and have them flying in as early as Saturday.

The Redskins are also working on a possible trade for restricted free agent Brandon Lloyd of the 49ers. Lloyd was given the first round tender, but the Redskins have initiated trade talks that could give the 49ers two mid-round draft picks. Lloyd agreed Friday night to make a visit to the Redskins on Sunday. There is a good chance Lloyd will come to an agreement with Redskins for big money before the end of the weekend. The plan for the Redskins is to sign Antwaan Randle El and Lloyd.

This plan, if true, sounds very exciting. But, is it overkill to have Moss, Randle El, Lloyd, Patten and Thrash? I guess if this is Gibbs' plan, I'll just say that he knows what he is doing. It seems like a little much, but he's got three rings whereas the only rings I have are in my toilet bowl.

maybe its for campbell to not have any reasons to fail...
he has an OL
he has an elite RB with solid backups
he has a pretty good FB and TE (cooley)
he has a good #1 WR

he's missing a good blocking/balanced TE at the #2 slot and WR depth right now. still, imagine R'El or lloyd or patten on someone's #4 CB...

maybe they're just pursuing 2 to pick the best deal.

Absolutly Awsome!!!!!

who is the Defense going to cover?

Moss, Lloyd, Patten, Randel El, Cooley, Portis

That puts the 3rd and 4th corner on Patten, and Randel El... Good Freakin Luck!

I think this is great if true. However it probably also means bye-bye D. Patten

that is a sick trio of receivers right there... all fairly young too.

gibbs' offense is combining power with speed (a newer version of the old school). exciting stuff!

thats a lot of money tied up with just one position.all the players would be welcomed here, but i dont see it happening.plus,we need someone to rush the passer

If the Redskins get Lloyd Or El it would be big! But both that is a dream! We will see what we will see. As for Collins can some one tell me more about him? If he is signed Ramsey is a Jet. On the D side I would have thought a DE or LB. This tells me that Taylor and Clark have something to do for this move. Taylor jail time if things go bad for him or Clark isn't what the team wants.

If they sign Randle El I would imagine that Thrash made be released or traded b/c Randle El would probably fulfil the return duties.

Anybody think this might be smoke put out by the agents for these WR's in order to garner bigger deals? I mean one makes sense, both seems a bit pricey. How much room do the Skins have anyway? I mean we are just what a day from being $7 mil over. I know they released 5, but Patten, Llyod, a DE, LB, CB, S . . . sounds expensive.

I'll believe it when I see each one holding up a Redskin jersey at Redskin Park and mugging for the cameras. There are just too many rumors floating out there right now. Yesterday, it was Isaac Bruce will be coming to Washington. Today, he is a re-signed Ram.

Thrash would be gone if we get both and Patten may not be happy with a house so crowded. I loved the Smurfs, but I hope we would not try for a second coming. We need some size. I trust Coach Gibbs, as he has the plans to take us to the Bowl.

good point, anybody remember last summer's rumor about Samari Rolle getting a $15 mil signing bonus w/us at the time we were negotiating w/Smoot? Once contacted the skins said it was bogus, & he signed w/Baltimore.
I'm watching clayton on sportscenter as i write & he said Randle-el is flying on Redskins 1 today. He also said again that we're trying to get Loyd. I just don't believe we can or should spend that much on 3 recievers, not to mention patten.

Re: Clayton: Redskins Plan to Sign Randle El and Lloyd

I'm not worried about Thrash, but that still leaves Moss, Randle El, Lloyd, Patten, and Cooley. All of these guys want their touches, but only two, possibly three are going to get 75 catches/1000 yards. Cooley is a team player and understands his role, and Moss is the #1 and will get his touches. The other three, however, I'm not so sure about.

Newby here. Been a regular brouser for a long time. All this got me excited enough to post. Been a regular contributer to CelticNation...my other favorite team.

My name says what I would say to all of you. Trust Gibbs, this guy is bottom line a winner in everything he does so whatever he does now will be the best thing for this franchise. The SuperBowl is his only goal. We've got $$ to spend and an owner with the nuggets to go and get whomever Gibbs desires. As long as Gibbs is making the decisions and not Snyder a win in the Spring time this year could mean the Super Bowl next season.

Sorry for the lame first post.

Peace, Eric

Newby here. Randle El can be used in many more situations. Try to sign him and Will Witherspoon of the Panthers.

Re: Clayton: Redskins Plan to Sign Randle El and Lloyd

Cutting Patten would make sense in terms of dollars. Skins would save about $600K on the cap this year and $3mil + next year. Randel EL + Lloyd + Moss sure seems like a huge upgrade over Patten + Thrash + Moss.

Re: Clayton: Redskins Plan to Sign Randle El and Lloyd

Maybe Gibbs is covering his butt, talking to two to make sure he gets one?

WR is obviously a high priority, maybe priority #1...that being the case we cannot end this week without atleast one of the available recievers. Other teams are talking to them too and may have more $$ to spend. He may sign two but just because they are talking to two, or three or whatever doesn't mean they'll all get offered a contract.

I'm no expert but I think it will be EITHER Randle El or Lloyd. Then on to the next priority...LB, DL, CB, OL, DB.

Gibbs always has a back up plan...didn't we learn that this past week?

Re: Clayton: Redskins Plan to Sign Randle El and Lloyd

if we are only gonna get one, i would definitely rather have lloyd...he's a way better receiver

people just think randle el is better than he is because he can do some trick plays...i dont think he's a true #2 receiver

SmootSmack 03-11-2006 11:07 AM

Re: Clayton: Redskins Plan to Sign Randle El and Lloyd

According to the Chicago Tribune, the Bears and Randle-El's agent discussed a contract believed to be 5 or 6 years at $20+ million. So if that's true, I guess that's what we would have to top to get him.

Re: Clayton: Redskins Plan to Sign Randle El and Lloyd

You should see a highlight reel of Brandon Lloyd, its jsut that he was on the 49ers or he would be more highly coveted, he makes acrobatic, roy will type catches.

As for cap room, we will be alright, im sure of it. if we sign DE carter and S archuleta, our D is basically set. and with cooley being cooley, sellers being the amazing blocker he is, we have two 270 pound guerillas blockin for moss, lloyd, randle el, and patten. If we sign randle el and lloyd today, i am going to do a crazy dance around the office!

it would be good if we could get randle el or brandon llyod their both quick but all da others i dnt know cuz we still need to fill lots of other positions

1st of all thanks guys for all the updates,, i am refreshing the page every 5 min because something worng with the tv cable and comcast cant come out untill monday to fix it,, great timing:frusty:,, but i wanted to know more about randle el,i know he would be a awsome fit for the skins at the trick plays that portis usually makes, after all he was a qb in college, but other than that how good is he at being a #2 wr? i havent gotten a chance to watch him that much throughout the season,, does he have good hands,, is he reliable? i would like to think that the only reason he got such hype lately is pretty much because of the play he made in the superbowl.:)

Re: Clayton: Redskins Plan to Sign Randle El and Lloyd

Patten is going to be 32 in August, so if we're going for both Lloyd and Randle-El, it could be seen as a youth movement. I think Thrash stays for special teams. And I think Patten stays for depth. But in 2007 both of those guys could easily lose a step.

If the Air Force had one of these, we'd be out of Iraq already.

Doesn't matter, we'll just use it for a raid on San Francisco and Pittsburg and see what happens.

I think andre is going to be an LB here, not a DE, though he may play both. Why haven't we moved on a true DE or DT?

If we're looking for a starting DE why not Kalimba Edwards? If we're looking to add depth Carlos Hall
