Who starts at QB?
As we all saw in the playoffs, when Mark Brunell is not 100% he struggles. His injury lingered from the final game against the Giants at home, where Ramsey came in and did well. This team is Jason Campell's team (unless we drafted him for no reason), with the signing of Randle El, and bringing in the second tier to the Joe Gibbs brain (Al Saunders), is this Campell's year to take the reigns at the helm or is Mark still the starter?
Don't get me wrong, if Mark is healthy he as well as the team will do great, but is there any talk of Jason getting the call? |
Re: Who starts at QB?
well, Adam Schefter reported that Campbell is gonna be our #3 because he still isn't ready yet, so for the time being this is brunell's job.

When did Schefter say this? I don't see any way that Campbell is not at least our #2 by August. |

I believe it was this afternoon. I was watching total access, about the time culpepper was traded to miami, and he was talking about qb movings and such around the league. I thought that Campbell would be our #2 this season too, that's why i'm not positively sure this true, but i do remember him saying that "sources say that campbell is not ready to be a #2 at this point". |
Re: Who starts at QB?
Mark Brunell will go down with a stinger or injury within the first half of the season and Jason will step in. It will be up to him to decide whether he takes hold of this team and leads it for years to come or performs ok and hands back Brunell the starting job the next week.

Re: Who starts at QB?
campbell, a 1st round pick who in his 2nd year, cant be a 2nd string QB? wtf?
|
Re: Who starts at QB?
Why do you even bother listening to Schefter talk about a quarterback situation in the beginning of the offseason. Jason Campbell has months to prepare and with the addition of Collins the learning process will be much quicker. Add to that 4 games of preseason action there's no way he won't be our #2 by the time the regular season starts. Gibbs even said last season if he had thrown Campbell into one of the games he would've done fine.

I apologize in advance to anyone this post might annoy or if this momentarily brings back to life...the old ass tired Ramsey-Brunell debate.
but let me just say that if Cambell is truly gonna remain our number 3 then i dont know wtf they brought in todd collins for. It is my personal belief that Ramsey given the weapons we now have...could...(and i think and have thought for a long time) should be the guy to lead us deep into the playoffs. I just really wish he had gotten a shot here. But i feel that every single thing that has been done with Ramsey has been done completely backwards... Like even now, regarding his impending departure from the skins...the skins have now signed a 3rd QB...making it painfully obvious around the league that Ramsey will not be here next year. This sends a message to potential trade partners that they can offer next to nothing or even nothing at all for ramsey...because they now believe we will just release him soon anyway. So what ever happend to getting fair value for the kid. i personally believe he is better than Brunell (though i understand and of course respect people who disagree with me on that point). However, i dont think it is far fetched to assert that he is probably better than Jason Cambell at this point. And certainly better than freaking Todd Collins... So all in all, i guess as a final mini tribute to Ramsey...i just wanted to say one last time that i really liked and believed in the kid...and i really wish we would keep our 3 QB's from last year...and actually allow Ramsey to compete with Brunell for the starting job next season. I truly believe he could lead this new and improved team to a fantastic season, and an exciting playoff chase... Ok, sorry once again to those who didnt want to have to read that...but thats just my two cents...and i guess if you dont appreciate reading about ramsey...well you can take comfort in the fact that these "silly" arguments wont be around for very much longer as i imagine ramsey will be gone in the coming days. |
Re: Who starts at QB?
if we can only get a 7th, keep him and open the competition :P who cares.
there is no way collins is the #2, and if campbell isn't better than him, why on earth did we watse a #1 on him? he came in early and was studying the playbook immediately. He works hard and wants to be prepared, so lets see what he has. |

I agree with your feelings on Ramsey but I've turned the page on the idea that someday he'd succeed here. Joe Gibbs doesn't like his game. Joe's not a good coaching fit for a young gunslinger who needs patience. With all the FA signings, I'd like to get very optimistic about the 2006 season but I have serious doubts about our QB situation. Last year, our passing game was customized for a 35 year-old Mark Brunell who still has the instincts of a scrambler but doesn't have the legs anymore. From the Seattle game through the San Franscisco blowout, Mark and Santana put up some amazing yardage numbers but, after that, their production fell off. At the end, in the weaker part of our schedule, we were very dependent on the running game and defensive turnovers. At this stage of his career, Brunell's game is very limited and easily defended. Furthermore, Al Saunders' scheme utilizes a pocket passer. Mark doesn't fit the system. I hope we didn't bring in Al Saunders to adjust his scheme for a 36 year-old ex-scrambler. Even if the media rumors that Campbell isn't ready are false, how optimistic can we get about the potential of an offense with a QB who has never taken a snap in an NFL game where real bullets were being fired? |
Re: Who starts at QB?
I always thought that Ramsey would do well following in the footsteps of Favre in GB.
But with a new regime and Favre perhaps gone as well I wouldn't wish anyone that route. If Ramsey leaves I just hope we get value for him. QB 1 Brunell 2 Campbell 3 Collins |
Re: Who starts at QB?
I think Brunell starts the season but Campbell has a chance at finishing it.. I don't listen to the mediots who say Campbell isn't ready.. They surely haven't been in practices, in the film room, in meetings so they have no way of telling.. I'd be suprised if Campbell doesn't start at least one preseason game and get significant time with the starters in another.. Collins is strictly an insurance policy/another knowledgeable voice for Campbell/Brunell about the offense.. I'll be glad when we can put the Ramsey stuff to bed once and for all..

Patrick was (and may still be) an excellent raw talent. He's tough, he's smart and he's strong. He tried to force throws where receivers were not getting separation and was picked frequently. But that was a problem with the receivers, not the QB. He was young and wanted to make plays. With the new WR talent on the squad, he'd look like the second coming of Elway if given half a REAL chance. I will miss not seeing Ramsey blossom in a Redskin uniform. Like Lavar, he deserved better. |

We'll open the season like this:
1. Brunell 2. Campbell 3. Collins Whether we'll close the season like that is the question. |

He follows the "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all policy." With Ramsey he often finds little nice to say, and instead dances around the questions. He doesn't do that with Campbell, he has plenty of nice things to say. |

Re: Who starts at QB?
Joe Gibbs likes to raise his QBs over a long time, the longer the better, Jason will be #3 next season, he will continue to learn by observing, hopefully if we get a game that will be a blowout Jason will get some snaps to see where he is at in his training.

Re: Who starts at QB?
Guys, I will try to find the link, but I read something online yesterday about the Todd Collins signing that his agent stated that the team informed Collins that he would be the number 2 guy going into the season. Of course that could all change after the Preseason next August. Collins being the #2 is most probably based on him knowning the offense better than Campbell at this point.

Ramsey wants to go somewhere where he has the chance to start. He isn't going to sign an extension with a team that doesn't suit him...and without that extension...there's not much value in picking up the last year of his contract. Particularly when he's probably going to be released if the team can't find someone who wants him for only one year. |

As of right now Collins probably is the #2, but that will change with a strong camp by Campbell. If Campbell can't beat out Collins on the depth chart we might have a problem on our hands.

Re: Who starts at QB?
Brunell will get us to the Super Bowl...if he fails to produce with the talent he's surrounded by then we can start talking about making a change. Until then Brunell is our guy, he's got about one more good season left in the tank.
I also heard during the end of last season that Campbell was having a hard time learning the offense and that he wasn't ready. |

All you Salary Cap Gurus out there, is Jason Campbell due any kind of bonus for playing as early as 2006 that the Redskins would avoid by not playing him until 2007?
I'm not saying that that's going to decide who will play in '06, I'm just curious. |

You'll have to show me that comment. Royal did fight his guts out, worked really hard, and had good hands except for that one game. Gibbs just didn't mention the things that limit him, like his speed, strength, and agility which affects blocking skills. But Royal did work really hard. Brunell circa 2004 wasn't doing anything wrong man, it was his injury causing the problems. That's what Gibbs was getting at with that comment. He doesn't blow smoke. He chooses his comments very carefully. He says positive things when he can, and doesn't talk about the players' limitations. His comments regarding Campbell have pretty much covered the gamut of every skill and attribute you'd want in your QB. It was glowing. |

Re: Who starts at QB?
I think that Schefter could be making some of these details up. Since the team lost in the playoffs, there have been approximately zero OTA's, camps, drills, or practices. It would be difficult to gauge Campbell's progress then, wouldn't it? The head coach has been raving about Campbell's ability and maturity, so perhaps his opinion differs from Mr. Schefter's.

Are you talking about drafting them? Theisman was already here (George Allen). Beathard selected Schroeder, Humphries, and Rypien with fifth and sixth round draft choices.
