Endzone Celebrations
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/9341722
I cought a little of the press interview before I went to bed today with Jeff Fisher and the Atlanta GM. I agree that some endzone celebrations are a little over the top and the game could do with out them. In a way I like the idea. What I do not like is where they say, "Nor can they do any celebrating on the ground or be part of any group effort." Now I do not care about the celebrating on the ground, but the group effort part I do not like. I understand that it should not be extravagant group effort, like say comming up with a dance routine or to the effect of that. But whats wrong with lets say a team type high-five? Kinda like the fun bunch used to do? I am not sure how many of you guys played football when you were in high school or pee wee leagues, but one thing that my coach was big on was no matter who scored the TD on your team be happy for them and congratulate them, be excited about the score, show emotion... |
Re: Endzone Celebrations
I don't really see how this makes the game better. most people think its fine as is.

Re: Endzone Celebrations
it will be interesting to see what happens when t owens scores his first T.D. because i thing the majority of this is aimed at him and chad johnson

Gasp! You mean TO could be ...........................banned for a Sharpie incident? |
Re: Endzone Celebrations
Steve Smith's celebrations were pretty... bad. Either way, I hate this rule. I wanna see Icchy Shuffles, I want to see the fun bunch. These are reasons, as a child, before I really understood the game, that I enjoyed football!
I like to see players show emotion. Show they care about the game and aren't just there to get paid and go home. |

Does anyone else remember when Smoot got a 15yrd'er for mimicking M. Washington's sack dance after Washington got one in Detriot? I'm afraid this new emphasis will draw more flags for simple emothional reactions by players. Also, does this mean we won't see anymore of Clinton's Cartwheels? |
Re: Endzone Celebrations
I'm on the fence, I'm all for some celebrations but lately they've been getting a little out of hand. While I love Chad Johnson's weekly routines, I can see how some people may be getting a bit annoyed by this.
|
Re: Endzone Celebrations
I agree, Matty. Most of the celebrations are stupid, but there are a lot that are done that are fun to watch. Namely Chad Johnson, some of TO's, and when steve smith did the jump I laughed.
It's not like it really slows the game down. The field goal kicker is on his way out. I'm curious exactly what the reasons are for this change. Why do they find it necessary? |

The NFL considers that 'choreographed' and subject to a taunting/unsportsmanlike penalty. |

All week leading up to a Bengals game all you hear about is what celebration Chad Johnson is going to do. Not saying I agree, I think it's fun, but I think this could be what the commitee is up in arms over. |
Re: Endzone Celebrations
Hey, who else was hoping that Chad Johnson would bring that deer he hit the previous week (which was still alive and healthy, or so he said!) to the game!
|
Re: Endzone Celebrations
There is already a rule about group celebrations in the endzone like the high five the fun bunch would do. Matter of fact the rule was put in place because of the high five. We scored a TD on Dallas and when the fun bunch went to do the high five Dallas players tried to break it up. It happend several time and fights almost brook out in the end zone. Thus the new rule came into effect. I don't mind the celebrations as long as they don't hold up the game. Some are good some are bad and some should just set the ball on the ground and walk away.

Re: Endzone Celebrations
stupid ones,, good ones it dont matter they are touchdown celebrations,, i dont see whats the point in trying to stop it,,they are taking the fun out of it, next season you wont be able to scratch your ass in the endzone without getting a penalty,, it's ridiculos, let the players have fun.. i really hope this rule dont pass
|
Re: Endzone Celebrations
Give me Barry Sanders after a TD.......that's what I want to see. Professionals acting like professionals.
|
Re: Endzone Celebrations
I agree with the rules. I think it takes away from the TEAM aspect of the game. Spike the ball what ever, but all the individual crap that TO, Johnson, Smith, the over the top crap should stop. You want to jump in the end zone fan area, cool, or thump you chest what ever I can take that. But the Ray Lewis re enactment by TO, and the crap Johnson pulls has to stop. Its just a ploy to market themselves and get TV time. What I would also like to see stopped is all the dancing and crap defensive players make after making a tackle. I mean these guys are jumping around dancing when they stop someone after a 6 yard gain. that to me isn't anything to get all jacked up about. That actually annoys me more than the endzone crap. I have to admit, the cartwheels portis did last year was funny as hell. but that is part of the stuff that needs to be curtailed abit.
|
Re: Endzone Celebrations
God forbid there be some emotion in football.
|
Re: Endzone Celebrations
Emotion is great in football, but seriously to get up and dance the iccy shuffle after tackling a guy after a 6 yard gain or longer. You have to admit the celebrating after a tackle or a normal play is getting out of hand. Especially guys making tackles, dancing around, and are actually losing the game by 3 or 4 scores.
|
Re: Endzone Celebrations
Emotion and excessive TD celebrations are totally different things.
I have no problem with some TD celebrations, but I think the league is looking to nip this in the bud before it gets too out of hand. |

I understand that's why they threw the flag, but really I think it was just Smoot reacting to Washington. I feel like pretending that the ball is a baby so you can pretend to wipe its ass is much more choreographed, but maybe it's just my old feelings that the majority of the questionable calls go against us (I'm paranoid like that). |
Re: Endzone Celebrations
See, I'm down for celebration as long as it's not malicious to the other team (even though I don't care, but if they're talking about compromise). I don't just want to see a spike and that's it.
|
Re: Endzone Celebrations
I was practicing a few endzone dances of my own to suggest to Brandon Lloyd.

I like the old fashion spike or running across the end zone with the ball held up but I feel they should not stop the others. We have enough rules as it is. Now TO doing Ray's dance was pretty funny.

Right, thats why I would love to see the "Fun Bunch" high-five come back, it just helps out the team aspect of the game, thats all... |
Re: Endzone Celebrations
I don't see what the big deal is, eloborate group celebrations are catching on all over the place. I know that in my office when we finish a big project we like to spike the report and dance like there's no tomorrow! We also dump the water cooler on our boss when we get a bonus.

Re: Endzone Celebrations
Next time you get a chance to watch a video of Riggo's TD run in the Super Bowl (without question on of the five greatest plays in Redskin history), watch what he does.
He takes the ball and tosses it to the official and runs off to line up for the extra point. That play put him in the HOF. This is an emotional game. I'm all in favor of genuine emotional reaction, celebration and release. The stuff that looks like it was choreographed by a bunch of gay figure skaters is crap though. |
Re: Endzone Celebrations
Here's the thing: If you don't want a team celebrating, don't let them score.
The classic Hand The Ball To The Ref will never go out of style. |
Here's the thing: If you don't want a team celebrating, don't let them score.
The classic Hand The Ball To The Ref will never go out of style.
The Barry Sanders way! Honestly to me if it doesn't make fun of the other team (taunting) and does not delay the game, I think it is all kind of funny. When Chad Johnson ran off and proposed to that cheerleader last year or threw autographed footballs into the stands, he did it all from the sidelines, which did not violate either of my above two points. Stuff done on the sidelines, doesn't slow the game down. |

The classic Hand The Ball To The Ref will never go out of style.
Both of the times that Santana torched roy and glenn he simply handed the ball off to the ref and ran back to the sidelines. Maybe he was just tired from running so damn fast, or maybe he was just saving his energy in case he had to do it again; either way, they were my favorite 'celebrations' of the year. |
Re: Endzone Celebrations
Obviously, fans want to see the celebrations - they're funny and/or entertaining. I propose these rules that would keep it reasonable:
1) 5 second limit 2) nothing offensive (ie sexual) 3) no props other than the ball and/or other items already in the endzone What about involvement w/ fans - like the Lambeau Leap? NFL needs to relax a bit... |

Hey - thanks Daseal! Been doing a lot of travelling. Got to get in in during the offseason... Hard to keep with all of the FA moves - I feel dizzy. |
Re: Endzone Celebrations
I don't like the fact that the NFL continues to take the fun out of playing football. I think that and endzone celebration is fine, whether it be a group effort, single or whatever. I like them, sometimes they stink but those are som of the things that make football fun to watch. I like to see a guy happy that he scored, not all stoic and serious all of the time. I miss the fun bunch celebration, that type of thing should be a Redskin tradition. It can't be though because of this crap. I can see if your dancing over a guy you just trucked but jeez, can these guys take the stick out of their arses and enjoy the game. That's just my opinion on the matter. The NFL rules the sports world but they are making the game too serious to me.

Re: Endzone Celebrations
I like the celebrations--I think they add to the excitement of the game. Also, this is what the palyers want to do. WHy shouldn't they decide, the guys who actually play the game, rather than some suits in a room?
Come on! Portis giving CPR to the football? Terry Orr mocking Deon's "2 Legit" dance with Hammer on the sideline at RFK? Why not have these things as part of the game? If players don't like it, they can score and celebrate in revenge, or they can get mean on D and smash the offender into the ground. It hypes players up. What I don't like is wild celebrations after totally ORDINARY plays, like a CB prnacing around after defending a pass. That's too much. BUt TD celebrations are part of the game. NFL=No fun league... |
Re: Endzone Celebrations
Kinda of a contradiction by the nfl. Football is the ultimate team sport, celebrations should be done as a team.
I would like to see the nfl ban celebrations after non touchdown plays. Im tired of seeing 300lb men dance after stuffing a run for a 1 yard loss. |

this is just some stupid ass shit.......who care if someone does something after a touchdown......, its just the NFL trying to stop us from being creative.........BS |
Re: Endzone Celebrations
I'm kind of split on this topic. I like seeing some of the celebrations - tds, making a big play (esp. at a critical point in the game), etc. I personally think it's a judgment thing. I like funny celebrations and the ones that the players get into when they are intensely feeling it. I personally dislike some that don't amuse or inspire me or some that take it too far as far as choreography and such, but I wouldn't ban them just because of my own personal taste. The ones that should be banned is when a player deliberately taunts an opposing player or team, you know the ones that might cause fights. It should be in the referees' discretion, but we can't even trust referees to officiate the coin toss before the beginning of the game let alone do this. I think that's what the real problem is.
