Why Did Ramsey Really Go to the Jets?

It just has never made sense to me. Pennington is the starter, that has been injured, but Ramsey is still the back up. The experts all have said that the Jets will most likely pick a QB. So why would Ramsey want to go to media crazy NY with all of the possible issues at hand. Seems he would have been safer here with our situation or another team that had instability at QB and not such a high draft choice.

Re: Why Did Ramsey Really Go to the Jets?

I would say that the Jets have an unstable QB situation. He was told he would be able to compete for the starting job but he has heard that one before. The Jets have a weak armed QB to throw short int's and they thought that a long int. would give them better field position.

he picked his own poison he wanted a trade he got one bottom line he will have to earn his position!

Re: Why Did Ramsey Really Go to the Jets?

Let's face it, nobody was offering him a starting job. At least in NY he'll have a realistic shot at competing. Pennington's arm was a limp noodle last year and he's again coming off surgery. He has a decent shot at beating Pennington out, at least early on when Pennington is still recovering.

Gwilljest 04-13-2006 12:31 PM

Re: Why Did Ramsey Really Go to the Jets?

Bottom line; Ramsey wants to be the man. He always wanted to be the man even w/ his best bud lefty at the helm last year. So, he jumped ship because he probably feels that Pennington is done. The guy had a weak arm to start- the injury probably shortened his career.

Schneed10 04-13-2006 12:40 PM

Re: Why Did Ramsey Really Go to the Jets?

Ramsey went to NY because they were willing to take him. His options were slim and none, folks. He took what he could get.

He liked his chances better trying to compete with an injured Chad Pennington than he did competing with Brunell in the here and now, and then competing with Campbell down the road.

Nobody buys Patrick Ramsey as a franchise QB, except for Offiss, and he's not a GM. If Ramsey is going to get a starting job, he's going to have to beat someone out for it. He's not good enough to just be handed the reins unquestionably. He needs to earn his career, starting now.

Ramsey could probably have started in San Francisco. I'm just not sure if Alex Smith is really as bad as he seemed last year, or if it was the lack of a team surrounding him.

If you're going to bring someone in to upgrade over your former #1 pick overall, he better either be rock-solid or have TONS of potential. That would explain why the 49ers didn't look at Ramsey, because he doesn't fit either of those criteria.

Re: Why Did Ramsey Really Go to the Jets?

Ramsey really didn't have any say in the matter once he requested the trade. In the Jets he has a chance to compete to be the starter which most other teams wouldn't have given him. Maybe he goes there and lights it up. I doubt it, but I hope for the best for him.

Everyone did before Gibbs arrived, and that includes almost everyone on this site at the time, that's why Miami was offering a high draft pick the season before, it was a brillant job by Gibbs to burn this kid down and get nothing for him.

Kind of funny no one had Bree's as a starting QB a couple of seasons ago, I do believe the Chargers drafted one Phillip Rivers to replace him with the intention of releasing him until Rivers held out, how did that pan out?

Bottom line your right I am no GM, and neither is Gibbs, why else would you give up a second rd pick for a QB who was about to be released and would have never sniffed a 43 million dollar contract? How about all these late round gems we heard about last year? Im still waiting to see just one. Now we are hearing the same thing again Gibbs talking about finding that late round gem, for some reason I believe he thinks that because Bobby Beathard was a genious at those type of picks so is he, well I am still waiting to see it!

Gibbs IMO has proved nothing about talent evaluation, Cooley is the 1 player I give him props for, the rest were simple top 10 picks that anyone could have made. Free agent signings? If you can't evaluate a current established, NFL starter than get out of the talent evaluation buisness. The signing of established talent at the rate we do is a big sign that we have no confidence in our ability to evaluate talent coming out of college. Lets see how we pan out this draft, I do hope we get it right.

Ramsey is going to be the next Trent Dilfer of the NFL. Decent enough talent but will always struggle for the starting role.

I'm not going to get into a debate about Gibbs' teambuilding methods and skills. The point of this thread was to examine why Ramsey ended up with the Jets. Quite simply put, everyone IN FOOTBALL now realizes he's nothing special at this point. He could be good, he could be bad. But he's got a ton of question marks surrounding him.

If GMs thought that Gibbs was responsible for destroying Ramsey's value over the last year, then logically they'd see something in him that leads them to believe he can be a great QB in this league if given a change of scenery and circumstance. Bottom line is nobody felt that way about him, and that's why he only garnered a 6th round pick.

I'm never going to understand why people think Ramsey is destined to be a top 10 QB in this league someday. When there are talents out there like Eli Manning, Peyton, Brady, Brees, Brad Johnson, McNabb, Culpepper, Roethlisberger, Carson Palmer, Delhomme, and Hasselbeck, I just don't understand what people see in Patrick Ramsey that makes them think he's going to one day join the ranks of those type QBs.

You're just wowed by arm strength, Offiss. He's one of the most innaccurate downfield passers I've ever seen. Ramsey is virtually incapable of hitting a receiver in stride on a deep route.

I think Ramsey is a great guy, but I don't think he will ever be anything special at this point. Even his one long TD pass to Moss in the Giants game was a bad pass that Moss jumped for and made a guy fall down. Basically Moss made Ramsey look good. Even though some of us love to hate Brunell and his wimpy arm, he really knows how to play QB and I have a lot of confidence in him making good decisions. Will Ramsey ever get to that point? I wonder.

Probably because we haven't had a Ramsey thread in a while.

Unfortunately, here we go yet again.

Ramsey the great... apparently 32 teams around the league are just dead wrong about him. Why don't they see the Montana-esque greatness that lies beneath? A Hall of Fame coach that appears to know a thing or two about evaluating QBs is just dead wrong too, right?

Sorry, that wasn't my intention to say Johnson is necessarily a top 10 QB. I do think he's pretty good though. I was just making a point that with these QBs currently playing in the league, what in the world makes anyone think Ramsey will be as good as these guys are now?

I don't think Ramsey will ever be as good as Brad Johnson is right now.

The funny thing about all of this is that it will never go away. If Ramsey craps the bed in NY there will be the 'told you so' crowd and if he lights it up then the 'we never should have gotten rid of him' chorus will chime in.. The only thing that will end the discussion once and for all is Jason Campbell becoming a Super Bowl winning Pro Bowl QB..

Re: Why Did Ramsey Really Go to the Jets?

Well, other QB castoffs have gone on to have some pretty good careers with other teams:

Brett Favre (Falcons)
Trent Green (Redskins)
Tom Tupa (Cardinals)....oh yeah, but as a punter
Vinny Testaverde (Bucs)
Rich Gannon (Patriots)
Doug Flutie (Rams)
Jeff Rutledge (Rams)
Steve DeBerg (Cowboys)
Ron Jaworski (Rams)
.....Joe Theismann (Dolphins)
Hell, even Doug Williams as good as he was didn't win a SB until he came to Washington.

My point is that lots of QBs given up for dead end up with some pretty good careers after leaving the team that drafted them. I personally don't think the story has been completely written for Ramsey. Let's see.

Oh, and please don't review this list and tell me which draft picks were traded to get the QBs. If they were that important to their original team, they would not have been let go in a trade either. Even Ramsey got a 6th rounder.

One more for the road. Sonny Jurgenson was originally an Eagle for godsakes.

Jeff Rutledge??? I suppose he was in the league for a while but I doubt Ramsey aspires to a Rutledge-like career.

JET 04-13-2006 05:54 PM

Re: Why Did Ramsey Really Go to the Jets?

I agree with what Socio said in his last post. The reason Ramsey went to the Jets is because they were the only potential trade partner willing to give Ramsey a shot at starting. I think that since Gibbs is such a nice guy he put PR in the best situation he could find even if it wasn't the one that benefitted the team the most.

I see several people like to dump on Offiss for thinking Ramsey has real upside. If Ramsey becomes the next Brees, will those people own up to being wrong? And if Ramsey doens't play better for the Jets than he did here, Offiss will you admit he isn't better than an average QB? Maybe some parameters could be set to define what would be a successful year for him, provided he gets to start.

And scowan, Moss made both QB's look good that game. It seems pretty unfair to Ramsey to talk about what a good catch that was, as if the throw was inconsequential. Watch the long TD Brunnell threw and the adjustment Moss made in that game. He was a great pickup, and a perfect example of how one organization can make good with a player that had a lackluster career elsewhere.

You could add Jake Plummer to that list. He blossomed with the right situation in Denver. Ramsey deserves a break and a fresh start. I hope he does well with the Jets, even though that's probably not ideal for him.

Re: Why Did Ramsey Really Go to the Jets?

Ramsey could model Vinny Testaverde's career. Or he could model Gus Frerotte's. He could model Rich Gannon's career. Then again he could be more like Ty Detmer.

If Ramsey gets the right situation, if Ramsey gets a decent surrounding cast, if Ramsey can deal with the NY media scrutiny, if Ramsey can mesh with a new coaching staff...

IF A FROG HAD WINGS HE WOULDN'T BUMP HIS ASS WHEN HE HOPS. Please don't come at me with all the possibilities that Ramsey may be destined to fulfill. He could turn out good, he could turn out bad. So while you're in fantasy land dreaming of him modeling Trent Dilfer's career, back in the here and now I'm noticing that he is a four year veteran who can't throw accurately when throwing more than 20 yards downfield, I'm noticing that he still holds the ball too long and takes sacks too much, and I'm noticing that he still throws just as many interceptions as he does touchdowns. Getting rid of him was the right move, I mean how long should we give the guy to find out if he's going to become the next Vinny Testaverde? Eight years? Ten years? How much patience should we have?

He could be good someday, true. That means a hill of beans to me. He's mediocre (at best) right now, and that's all we should care about as we're gearing up for a run deep into the 2006 playoffs.

Patience with a QB should not be infinite. The greatest QBs in the league never took as long to develop as guys like Vinny Testaverde. By their 4th year, you knew what you had in Tom Brady, in John Elway, in Dan Marino, and in Joe Montana. Who knows where Ramsey's going from here, but all I know is he's not where a "franchise QB" should be by his 4th year in the league.

The biggest reason for that? He's NOT a "franchise QB."

Ramsey is gone for one reason only. He cost too much for our cap. Look what we've been able to do without his payroll. On Ramsey's behalf, I'd thought he'd be one of the next great QB's. It is too bad spurrier threw him to the wolves and didn't care about Patrick's physical well-being. As far as the post I'm quoting how about the part of "toughness"? I've never seen a QB take such a beating like '02 and '03. "Toughness" is not one of Patrick's problems. Hopefully he does pull a Brad Johnson on us, and someday win the SB just because he's such a stand up guy. He backed Brunell all the way, and yes he wanted to play. However did we make the playoffs last year? Did Ramsey sabtoge it in anyway? Did he not hit Moss on a standing ovation pass? All Ramsey wanted to do was be a Redskin, can you really blame or fault him? Good luck in Jersey Patrick.

Hail Gibbs

Ramsey was going to cost us about $1M against the cap this year, that's really not the main reason he's gone. He's gone because he wanted out, and because he wasn't in our long-term plans.

Ramsey was going to cost us next to nothing against the salary cap. We could have easily carried his cap figure. Gibbs let him go because he wanted to reward him for his professionalism throughout the season.
