Patten to be released?

Radio 980 in Washington is reporting strong rumor around Redskin Park that David Patten will be released soon, due to depth at the WR position.

Somebody has to go, it's either him or Jacobs.

Re: Patten to be released?

i dont understand why we would release a proven vet because we have depth now. wasn't that our downfall last year? a lack of dpeth at the wr. position. from what i understand its not a cost cutting move. if he is asking to get out then thats a different story but to just release him for no good reason doesn't make sense.

Lose Jacobs. He has done absolutely nothing for anyone.

I don't see Patten being released at all.

It should be Jacobs. He's produced absolutely nothing in three seasons.

Let's just hope they release a WR soon. I'm growing tired of this speculation.

I don't see Patten being released at all.
I would not think the issue is Patten over Jacobs that would be stupid. He may want out to get more playing time but with his performance last year he would take a pay cut. I thought I just read that he looked good in our last mini camp.

I just read an article about how good patten looked. He's not going anywhere.

Plus, he's stated that he's more than willing to accept a #4 receiver role.

He's exactly the kind of team player that Gibbs likes.

Re: Patten to be released?

Bye bye Taylor. I mean hell, at least Patten has produced at SOME point in his career.

Watch him get cut and go to the Eagles.

Red Robert 06-27-2006 03:55 PM

Re: Patten to be released?

I would be shocked if Patten is let go and Jacobs stays. Gibbs brought in Patten himself and Patten is a strong Christian guy on a personal level. Plus Patton has won a superbowl already.

We do not need another ex-Redskin with a chip on his shoulder playing for a rival. I f he is released watch Chicago grab him super quick.

MTK 06-27-2006 03:56 PM

Re: Patten to be released?

The only thing I can see going for Jacobs is that he plays special teams, and on a Gibbs team the 4th WR plays teams. Remember McCants?

Whatever happens I'll trust the decision.

Radio 980 is amending their report to say, the original report is coming out of the "Boston Herald". Hmmmmm, I'm sure you can make book on that!

Joe said he did a great job in the recent minicamp and was pleased with what he saw in both ability and attitude. Would be surprised it it happened this quickly.

Re: Patten to be released?

Hearing about his release is getting tiring. There simply isn't any rational for releasing him now....before training camp even starts. Unless Patten is asking to be released I don't see him being release this soon if that.

Maybe they meant that Gibbs' winning formula patent was being released.

That could explain a little more. If, after the OTAs, Patten is going to be the number 4 receiver, he may have prefered to be released. He probably is smart enough after the Coles situation to understand not to voice his displeasure publicly less he receives the fans ire. I doubt he gets released because the skins don't want him.

I obviously second this thought. Without it, I GOT NO PLACE ELSE TAO GO!!!

I really hope we don't cut Patten before he has a chance to prove he's wealthy and ready to contribute to the team. If we did that would mean Gibbs went back on his word, and I don't like that thought.

this is bull, people were positive he was gonna be cut earlier, deadline came, nothing happened...whatever we will see, i still do not think he is gonna be cut...Moss, AR-E, Lloyd, Patten, and Thrash.....im shaving my eyebrows if jacobs stays on the list and patten gets the boot.

everyone just step back and take a deep breath, think about what is being said here. a proven professional in david patten or taylor jacobs. that bum has been hurt so often no one in these parts even knows if he can play at this level. bye bye to jacobs

BrudLee 06-27-2006 07:22 PM

Re: Patten to be released?

My only concern is that the coaching staff is talking up Patten in order to create a market for him. If he's "making great steps forward", then he has value. If he's "clearly not in the mix", then he doesn't.

It's funny but wasen't Patton considered a bum when he was released by the Giant's?

The fact is circumstances sometimes dictate a players success, there have been plenty of players who were given up on be thier first team for one reason or another, only to go on and have fabulous careers, some hall of fame careers, just because Jacobs hasen't had succees yet doesn't mean he won't, I am very curious to see how he performs in a Saunders offense? And yes he's a better special teams player than Patton.

I don't see the need to carry Patton as a 4th WR, better to let him seek significant playing time else where, personally I believe all our WR's are going to really flourish under Saunders, which means who makes the most sense? Like it or not it just may be Jacobs whom does a good job on specials.

Gmanc711 06-27-2006 10:57 PM

Re: Patten to be released?

Patten played for the Patriots prior to coming to Washington.

The fact of the matter is Patten is better than probaboly both Thrash and Jacobs...why would get rid of someone who is a better player than another person? Pattne has stated that he is more than happy to compete for playing time, so that tells me that if he's not the best, he dosent mind not playing, or will work hard to see that time. Jacobs is a freaking joke, how that guy even stayed on this long is amazing to me, its time to cut our losses with him and move on.

We need the depth. We need Patten. Remember last season. No depth = Taylor Jacobs starting = no points. Cut Jacobs!

I have been saying that all along Matty about DP. As much as many of us (including me) would like to see him stick around for depth, the question with him becomes"What is he going to do on sundays'"? Being the #4 receiver, coupled with his salry he would have to play ST in order to warrant a roster spot. Since he does not play ST is it worth it to the team to keep him around maybe to catch a few balls as the #4 receiver.

It's all been said aleady. Patten is the better player. It won't surprise me if he gets cut tho, hes a spare part at this point.

Re: Patten to be released?

It would be a critical mistake to release Patten. We need him for depth, and also to keep people from getting at all complacent.

Taylor Jacobs has had his opportunites here in my view. He has the talent, but he has to go somewhere else to realize it. We don't have the time to wait for him to develop anymore.
