I just picked up a copy of Street & Smith's Pro Football preview for 2006. It really is a good magazine for all of the facts they give and the way it's all laid out. Even though I disagree with their assessment of the Skins, it's a good preview if you ask me. Each team is thoroughly examined, and every article contains an anonymous quote from someone within their division with their personal viewpoint on the featured team -- whoever they are -- could be a player, coach, front office guy, who knows.

Most of the inter-divisional viewpoints seem curteous, and offer opinions with respect and admiration. This one though, was especially harsh if you ask me:

Is Saunders' offense really [I]that[/I] much different than Gibbs'?

Last year we were one #2 receiver from pushing even deeper into the playoffs, and that was obviously with Patten for half the year.

This is just a half-assed assessment based on the past few years and it totally snubs all the strides that the team made last year. What a joke.

Errr...the Chiefs were 6-10 in saunders first year? This is supposed to be reflective of Saunders as an offensive coordinator? I would have thought having the fourth ranked offense in 2001 would have been better indicator.

Defense still wins championships and this defense will help the offense on numerous occassions with a short field. Pretty harsh about the 8-8 struggle as the last 1/4 of the season the Redskins were among the elite 8 in the league and hot as hell.

Thats a very real standpoint. I both agree/disagree but good points sorta. We have all discussed Mark and the QB situation, there is alot that can go wrong and alot of uncertainties there for sure. In regards to KC's record, KC has to be one of the worst defense teams every year, pass or run against them at your will. Which is why they havent done squat except boast great Off. numbers, admit it. Sure Snyders plan is to spend money, but there is a saying you have to spend money to make money.I know he is trying, look at the ravens they are so tight with their money, never greedy in Free Agency and it cost them, they missed Rays prime and may make some noise this year but be prepared the next 5 years they will be the Browns. I think its a bit nieve of the writer to say the skins fight to be 8-8, yeah its been a battle but look at Joe Gibbs success, HOF coach and 3 rings to brush off the skins is foolish. Heart, chemistry, and talent got and will get us through. With our schedule as rough as some matchup are , the power shift alligned to the NFC, most competitive the division that it has been in years yes it is up hill, I do have my doubts, but I believe that they BELIEVE they def. are contending. If G.Williams is a magician for using what little he has to work with, what would be the rebuttal to the weapons he now has to create a pass rush? Dumbest journalist writing I have read. Al in KC also had half the talent the skins do offensively so I say it will come together come playoff time.

Dating back to 2001 when Saunders took over as offensive coordinator, the Chiefs rank first in the NFL with 30,470 net yards of total offense (379.3 ypg). The Chiefs oppulent numbers during that 80-game span from 2001-05 are also the league's best in the following seven categories: offensive TDs (262), rushing TDs (131), total first downs (1,760), Red Zone TD percentage (64.1 percent), runs of 10+ yards (312), passing yards per attempt (7.83) and passing yards per completion (12.61). The foundation for Kansas City's offensive onslaught was established in 2001 when Kansas City finished the year ranked in the NFL's top 10 in rushing, passing and total offense for just the second time since the AFL-NFL merger.
That season, Holmes led the NFL in rushing with 1,555. I dont see any stats to prove the article true. saunders came out of the gate, QB, RB, FB, TE, OL have all suceeded getting to the probowl. Imagine if he had the personnel the skins have.

I take issue with the idea that Gregg Williams "has done more with less". Even on paper, Washington has one of the best secondaries in the league, a very solid linebacking core(minus Holdman), and probably the most underrated defensive tackle in the league in Griffin. With the talent they've added, the defense should be even more potent next season.

Yeah, I really wonder who made those comments. Someone from within the NFC East supposedly made the remarks. It sounds like a player, rather than a coach.

Sounds like something T.O. would say. Remember, he conveniently missed out of the first Eagle game.

The chiefs offense was ranked 4th in 2001, and thats with their number 1 receiver, eddie kennison, only playing 5 games...their top receiver that year, besides gonzalez, was Marvin Minnis who only got 33 catches for 511 yards and 1 td. It was also Trent Green's and Priest Holmes' first year on the team. If we have the 4th place offense next year, and it takes 2 years to get good at the system, other teams better really watch out

I have a question because you guys know alot more about football than I. Do you guys realy think that they are throwing out Gibbs O book and completly moving to saunders system? If they do mix the systems will terms change to match Saunders system or can they keep some of Gibbs terms and some of Saunders. I just don't see them changing the whole system and changing all the play calling.

Dy-no-miiiiiiiiite. Seems quite logical. The mystery with Saunders has always been how can they produce with so little. I think he squeezes every angle of yardage possible, it will translate, everyear the skins have a new Off cord. saunders is a baller. The OG of it if I may.

If so, I can see where they are coming from, because a lot of teams overachieve. Seattle and Denver both overachieved last year.

I would make the arguement that the Skins [I]underachieved[/I] last year (that is losing more games than their situation dictated). They had that 3 game losing streak, and could have easily won all those games. They vastly outgained both the Chiefs and Broncos in yards, losing only due to turnovers.

I think they should have been a 12-4 maybe 13-3 team [I]last[/I] year. But hey, there's always this year.

They're completely switching to saunder's system, but it's really not that much different. They both learned from Don Coryell. The only real difference is the terminology and the playcalling

I think the terminology changed to be consistent with Saunders's O, but the formations and plays we see this year will be a combination of Gibbs' and Saunders' offenses.

I'd say that's earning a playoff berth. Sounds like a playoff team to me no matter what way you spin things.

10 wins and 2 losses in conference is a solid playoff team to me.

It matters not what these people think. The only way you can say the Redskins D is smoke and mirrors is if you haven't seen them play more than a couple of games in the last two years, which is probably the case here. In 34 games under Williams the defense has been OUTSTANDING in 29 or 30 of those. I'd say they were at least good enough to win in 33 of the 34, the one egg was in New York last year. You can't do that with gimmicks.

I think experts like this will have to quickly re-evaluate once the obvious becomes... obvious.

I think it isn't, I think its great because I will remember these moments when we make the playoffs again. And I can't wait for the shit we will get next year, and I can't wait to prove em' wrong again. Saunders and Gibbs' offenses are hardly different. They're from the same coaching tree aren't they?

As for taking two years to fire up Saunders' offense, well even though technically he was the WR coach in St. Louis for all intents and purposes he co-ran that offense with Vermeil. And let's see, how did he do his first year in St. Louis? Oh yeah, #1 offense in the league, Rams finish 13-3 and win the Super Bowl.

I think this guy who wrote this, went with little facts, and the age old Skin's hate trail. All points mentioned above were good. Saunders did well in KC his first year, just their D sucked. With the Rams, they were ranked #1, and Saunders has been known to take low profile recievers and make them produce and significantly add to the offense. Let's see, the Skins already have a good D and we have a good reciever in Moss, and let's assume for all intents and purposes of this arguement, AR-E and Lloyd are bad recievers; doesn't that basically mean with Saunders we have all parts of the equation to succeed? If this writer is trying to facts about Saunders and our recievers, his exact points actually disprove his "theory".
