A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
I just got into one of the dumbest arguements I've had in months at lunch with a co-worker. He's mad because Quizno's put mayo on his cheesesteak and he hates mayo. He claims that real cheesesteaks don't have mayo on them, and that he should know because he's orginally from Philly. He goes so far as to say that most people don't like mayo on them, and that's where the arguement started.
So, what do you guys think? Do you put mayo on a cheesesteak? I say that most people must like it and that's why Quizno's puts it on without asking. In fact, I feel like most places do that (I've never had a cheesesteak in Philly). If they put mayo on as a "default" topping most people must like it. [if I knew how to start a poll I would, can someone help?] |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
NO WAY!!! Cheese whiz only baby! No MAYO! FYI...this is the only thing that Philly is good for!!!!
|
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
I like to put hot sauce on my cheesesteaks. Sometimes I'll add just a touch of mayo.
I'll add a poll |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
Thanks TAF

Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
Philly native here.
Mayo is absolutely not a standard on an authentic cheesesteak. In fact, I've never heard of such nonsense. If you went down to South Philly to Pat's or Geno's, or to Roxborough to Delissandro's, I'm pretty sure they'd smack you if you asked for mayo. Absolutely not. NO MAYO. |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
No mayo just a little mustard. A good steak sub should not need eather one.
|
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
It's all about the quality of the meat baby. Get some nice, thin-sliced ribeye with some Cheese Whiz smothered over it. Add some green peppers, onions, mushrooms. Good god.
Mayo is the bane of my existence. I get super pissed at restaurants who put shit on my burgers without my consent. They should come PLAIN and you request what you want because it's easier to put on than it is to take off. F...mayo. |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
I can't explain it, but I have this sudden urge for a piping hot footlong cheesesteak with mushrooms, onions, hot sauce

I've never heard of mustard either. But you're right, if you get a good one in Philadelphia you don't need to add a thing. I remember when I lived in Richmond during college I would get a cheesesteak and it was just straight nasty. You desperately needed to put something on it. In that way I'm blessed living in this area. Though if I want a good pork barbecue sandwich, Philly f's those things up all the time. Virginia and Carolina are the places to be for pork barbecue. It's funny the way certain sandwiches are totally regional. |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
This is some interesting stuff. It reminds me of why I majored in sociology.
|
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
I just shared this thread with my buddy who now lives in Boston. He's from this area and not a member of this site, but I thought I'd pass along what he said, kinda funny:
Mayonnaise?? No. Simply, I don't order cheesesteaks outside of Philly for that reason. Mayonnaise? What's next, lettuce? Pickles? Jesus!
|
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
Yup, and BBQ is VERY regional. I make my own BBQ sauce for cookouts a lot and there are like 4-5 flavors I end up making. There's Memphis, Kansas City, Eastern and Western Carolina and sometimes I make Arkansas. All have very distinct flavors and it's hard to pick just one even thougn most of the time I'm partial to the Carolina ones which have a more mustardy, vinegary flavor.

Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
You should have shared that info, SBF might be waiting in the bushes to beat the receipies out of you.

Know what's so awesome? When you're going to a cookout with smoked ribs slathered in so much sauce that it runs down your wrist, and pulled pork with hot BBQ sauce, and beef brisket, and juicy burgers with all the fixins, and brats with onions, and baked beans and corn on the cob covered in butter, and potato salad. And you eat so much that you need a hose to clean off. Plus ice cold beers of all flavors, where you dunk your hand to the bottom of the ice water in the cooler and fishout the coldest one. PS The torture shall continue until you give me my soup. |

Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
So Malcolm, today I had a big plate of leftover fettucini alfredo for lunch. It was a big ol' plate, all buttery and cheesy. Gosh it was the perfect thing because now I feel really full and satisfied. I don't think I'll be hungry until 8 pm tonight!
What'd you have? How bout you, AMD? |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks

Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
Mayo on a cheesesteak?

Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
I can respect hot sauce on a cheesesteak. I'm a bit of a hotsauce freak myself.
I've put tabasco on everything from popcorn to pasta to pizza, eggs, sandwiches, you name it. |

I'm an A1 guy. It's MY hotsauce.

She was like 7, 8 years old at the time and she would just grab the jar of mayo take a couple spoonfuls out, put it in a bowl and eat. It was nasty! Luckily it only lasted like one summer |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
my cousin ate a stick of butter when she was like 2 because she thought it was candy. That was 20 years ago but he still give her shit for it to this day.

Yeah. Now don't get all excited. It won't be a daily occurrence! I'm still a grinch. But on occasion I do hear all the Who's down in Whoville singing their happy songs. |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
PS Thanks for the soup, I was hungry.
|
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
And Schneed's heart grew two sizes today.

Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
Fantastic!
Now, to answer your question from before Scheed. I had a classic Itailian from Quizno's with extra peppers and it went through me like I couldn't believe. I practically had to shove the custodian to the ground to get to the shitter faster. |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
A cheesesteak does not have Mayo on it.
BUT: I used to work at Jerry's sub shop. We had something called a "steak and cheese" that we'd eat with Mayo, Lettuce, Tomato, and hot peppers. It was good. But it wasn't a cheesesteak. |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
When my brother and I were kids we told one of our friends once to close his eyes and we were going to give him a spoonful of some really delicious homemade whipped cream.
We shoved a massive spoonful of mayo down this kid's throat. He ran down our steps and barfed in our backyard. I still crack up laughing about that story to this day. |
