proper condiment for hot dogs?

Ok, the cheesesteak thread got me inspired to ask, what's the proper condiment for hot dogs?

There's only one correct answer here if you ask me.

MUSTARD!

And please, let's not even bring mayo into this debate. That would be so freaking wrong.

Cheese and BBQ sauce.

Re: proper condiment for hot dogs?

The only question "Ketchup" is the answer to is as follows:

"What gutter condiment for hillbillies should be used to extract confessions from people?"

Oh, yeah. I went there.

Ketchup....what about the sweet NC slaw?

JWsleep 08-18-2006 02:45 PM

Re: proper condiment for hot dogs?

Kraut and mustard are the correct condiments. Relish for the "dessert dog" follwing the first 4.

Trojans?

Chili Dogs!

EEich 08-18-2006 03:09 PM

Re: proper condiment for hot dogs?

Gulden's Spicey Brown for me please. Onions and relish optional.
Chili dogs, kraut dogs and even corn dogs are acceptable on occasion.
Ketchup on a hot dog is an abomination. I almost divorced my wife over it.

My faith in humanity has been restored.

I walked away from the cheesesteak thread feeling like all was lost.

EEich have you had Ted's steamed cheeseburgers out here in Meriden? They're Awesome! We should go sometime. And we gotta catch a Skins game soon.

EEich 08-18-2006 03:22 PM

Re: proper condiment for hot dogs?

Sounds great!
That place is 5 minutes from my home and I've never been there.
I've had the steamed CBs elsewhere in the area... just not there.
Also... (argueably) the world's first CB was served at Louis Lunch in
New Haven... 30 minutes away and haven't been there yet either.

Mustard.

The radio buttons should be:

Mustard

or

Other

Re: proper condiment for hot dogs?

Mustard, relish , kraut(the more sour, the better!).

Anyone who puts ketchup on a hot dog is a sick sick human being. You make me sick you peice of trash! ummm, sorry, i kinda got carried away....

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

That sort of thing just isn't my bag baby.

Chili and cheese.

Ok, I voted for ketchup....I KNOW...I've heard it before...

Re: proper condiment for hot dogs?

damn I didn't know so many people hated ketchup on their dogs. I hate the sight & smell of mustard personally so I said ketchup but I also like mozzeralla or regular cheese sauce on my hot dogs sometimes 2.

wolfeskins 08-18-2006 08:57 PM

Re: proper condiment for hot dogs?

Big C 08-18-2006 09:41 PM

Re: proper condiment for hot dogs?

Has anyone ever had a hot dog at Turner Field in Atlanta? They have like two dozen different kinds there, and they're pretty good.

FRPLG 08-19-2006 01:08 AM

Re: proper condiment for hot dogs?

Damn I hate ketchup. There are things in the world that I am simply not on board with and ketchup is right near the top. Like seriously the lists goes basically like this.

List of things that make no sense to FRPLG:
1. Crazy ass people who kill innocent people for no damn reason(see 9/11)
2. Crazy ass people who put ketchup anywhere except the trash.
etc...

The stuff is straight gross. I don't even understand the concept. Let's get this straight. I am supposed to take this goddess of sliced and deep fried potato, salted to perfection by the way, and dip its savory goodness in a sugared up puree of over ripe tomato? Why the hell would I ruin something so savory and good with sweet tomato syrup?

In the rare moments i eat hot dogs, i like chili on them.

Putting jalapenos on a hot dog spices it up just right!

Re: proper condiment for hot dogs?

Mustard only... I'll make an exception for bacon-wrapped found all around LA.

Kraut and mustard on brauts.

EternalEnigma21 08-19-2006 11:37 PM

Re: proper condiment for hot dogs?

If I dont make it a chili dog, I always mix the two. Theres really no other way to go. Mustard and Ketchup are perfect compliments. Just like if you cook mustard greens and put stewed tomatoes in the same water....

Good Stuff!!!

dmek25 08-20-2006 10:30 AM

Re: proper condiment for hot dogs?

if your eating a dog wrapped in cheese and bacon, then alittle ketchup is fine. straight up dog, only mustard will do

joecrisp 08-20-2006 12:58 PM

Re: proper condiment for hot dogs?

I've always been a chili dog guy myself, preferably with some chopped onions on top. But if no chili is available, I'm certainly going for the mustard, with NO KETCHUP!

Brud, I was raised on the hillbilly/redneck/white trash (choose your epithet) tradition of boiled hot dogs on a slice of white bread soaked-thru and soggy with ketchup... and I agree with your assessment wholeheartedly!

Dogs prepared in such a manner truly are an abomination. My wife (who is from the Midwest) refers to them as "Hoosier Dogs". Apparently, the word "hoosier" is the Midwest equivalent of "white trash"? I'd never heard that expression until I met my wife.

At any rate, I find "Hoosier Burgers"-- another staple of my childhood-- equally disgusting. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore my mom, but there's a reason I developed into a great cook: survival!

Re: proper condiment for hot dogs?

I HATE boiled hot dogs. Grill or toaster oven only (toaster oven is a lot like grilling them, only inside the house).

BDBohnzie 08-21-2006 02:39 PM

Re: proper condiment for hot dogs?

no ketchup...you can put anything else you want on a hot dog, just please don't put ketchup.

I prefer spicy brown mustard with some onions and relish.

firstdown 08-21-2006 03:44 PM

Re: proper condiment for hot dogs?

If I had to choose I'd say mustard but I realy like both.
