Re: What Happen to Your D
I don't think D'Boyz is trying to trash talk us. I think he's earnestly asking our opinion of the problems.
On the run defense, I noticed Williams lining the guys up in a straight 4-3 most downs. Williams' ultimate run defense formation is a 5-2, when he lines Daniels over one of the guards, Griffin over the center, Salave'a over the guard, and Carter right over the tackle. He then moves Washington up to the line, just outside the other tackle. The formation prevents the center from reaching the second level, forcing him to handle Griffin, and allowing each of the D-lineman to go man-on-man with the offensive line. The players all use their quickness to generate penetration, and since the center is occupied with Griffin, Lemar Marshall runs free to the ball-carrier. He never ran this formation once against the Jets. He just lined the guys up in terrible situations and they were letting up 4 and 5 yards on a consistent basis. Of those 140 yards you mentioned, 61 came on that reverse play which was simply the result of overpursuit. That part is the player's fault, but otherwise I think it was simple scheming. If the Skins get gashed by Dillon/Maroney this week against the Patriots, then I'll be worried about the run defense. As for the offense, the receivers are getting open and the line is protecting Brunell. But Brunell's timing isn't there yet. That comes with time. Some holes were getting opened pretty well for Sellers and Betts at times against the Jets, and they took advantage. But those are holes that Portis can turn into 12 yard gains instead of the 6 yard gains that Sellers and Betts were ripping off. The offense will take some time to get in sync fully. |
Re: What Happen to Your D
Ugh. Already wanting to think way too much into preseason stats. Griffin went down. Williams starts putting people on islands to see how they react. Also, it was yet another trick play in PRESEASON by a shitty team. I honestly think it almost surprises our guys that someone is flaming enough to run one then. Aside from that, the defense played fairly lights out. Lots of good pass D and fairly good run D, even after Griffin went down.
Way to come in and try to stir the pot. Just like was mentioned above, come back when the games matter. |

Hey, it's preseason...there are no problems. I was trying to explain that to my wife that these are basically "practice games" to see who makes the team. Nothing to worry about, except CP's shoulder. |

It was a bad game. The guys were not mentally in it because it was pre-season. Gibbs wants them more focused than they were, and he was pissed that they didn't put on a better show for the home crowd. At least it wasn't the end of the season playoff deciding game.... |
Re: What Happen to Your D
Yeah, at home...against the Rams.

Re: What Happen to Your D
Hi guys, this is my first post, kinda feel stupid that it is responding to thread started by a dallas fan. However I feel the same way, everyone is making a big deal about these preseason games. While the injury situation is unfortunate, the actual losses don't really matter. The Colts currently are on an 8 game preseason losing streak. I don't hear people saying that their looking bad for the season. Also if you all remember in 1991 when the Skins won their last super bowl they went 0-4 in the preseason. Like some of you all were saying these games are for the coaches to guage what players will actually make the team. By the way is anyone else impressed with the play of Mike Espy, he has been a pleasant surprise. Being loaded at wide receiver hurts his chances but I hope he makes it. Anyways let me know what you all think.

Re: What Happen to Your D
I WAS impressed until all the drops last game. He alone stalled some drives that could have given Campbell more reps and the Skins more points.

Wow. The troll uses really poor bait and still manages to get a whole lot of bites.
1) Preseason 2) This coming from a Dallarse fan? 3) STILL Preseason. |

Solid first post. I'm not quite so much in the camp of "ah it's preseason, it doesn't matter." Preseason doesn't matter for the teams who manage to turn things around before the season starts. But if you're a team who gets overconfident and doesn't change the attitude, or can't pick up the system, or can't get healthy, or can't get timing down between QB and WR, then you're not going to turn things around before the season starts. We're in a situation where something has to change for us to be able to look back on this preseason and say "see, that preseason we went 1-3, looked like crap, and still made the playoffs." If something doesn't change, we're going to look back and say that preseason was a harbinger of things to come. We have to: A) Figure out why we look so bad. Is it overconfidence, injuries, lack of motivation, not understanding the system, not having timing down between QB/WR, vanilla schemes, etc. and B) Fix it in a hurry. There should be a sense of urgency on the part of the coaching staff and the players to enact change. And we should not just simply assume it's going to happen. The thing is we still have a few weeks, so there is time. It's not time to panic yet. But if we don't see some signs of improvement in the last two games, it's officially time to check our expectations for the season. |

For my 500th post I ask that this be locked. I am not going to discuss the best defense in the league with a Cowturd fan who doesnt even have ground to speak on. Its funny he is even here to begin with. Pick a side and stay on it.

Re: What Happen to Your D
Apparently you do not know who our starters are.
1st preseason against the Bengals - 2 series played total of 19 yards given up. 2nd presason game against the Jets - 1st series 0 yards, 2nd series 40 yards, 3rd series 6 yards Total of 46 yards Most Starters removed after 1st quarter. So go back to defendeding the signning of TO and Concrete legs with your fabulous o-line. CRT is back it is time to rumble. |

i was more impressed with JIMMY FARRIS, that guy never drops a pass thrown his way. i would like to see him make the team. ESPY has been hot and cold, he dropped a few very catchable balls last game. |

Schneed10 thxs for your opinion man yeah I wasn't trying to trash talk I wanted and honest direct opinion and I appreciate your really well rounded and based opinion. I'm a little concerned because I really believe your team is a mayor contender but I haven't seen that yet, I expected some off timing on your offense as you said specially on Brunell I just don't see much on his tank left. But I really expected your D to dominate specially in the run game I was just surprised your first team d to get run over but you cleared that up really good let's see this weekend how it goes. Sorry for the delay on the response lost my connection the past days |

There's a Parcells-TO joke here. I just know there is. Let me ask you a question. Seems like Marion Barber is getting a lot of carries in the red zone this preseason. Is that to keep JJ fresh? Are they going to platoon them? Or is the first step toward phasing Jones out of there? I think that's your big X factor this year, the running game. |
Re: What Happen to Your D
ohh and to the 1 saying it's only preseason MAN I Know.... we all know teams don't show their playbook only "vanilla" plays as they call it.
During preseason I don't care if the team wins or loses. I look for the first team offense to move the chains in the few drives they play, QB look comfortable and in sink with wr, look for the protection of the line and see if they can open holes, if the wr are getting separation. In case of the D even if they don't blitz a lot try to see the coverage, speed and control on the line. But specially I try to see the younger guys see if anyone shows something that can contribute to the season more than just practice squad, and if there seems to be any problems get to them before the season starts. That's why asked you guys about your team |
