Sacrifice the Season
If Jason Campbell is indeed our future why not just start playing him now? The longer we avoid starting him the longer his development will take. I think not winning is not an option for Snyder even if it would pay huge dividends down the line. Would you guys be ok seeing the Redskins have a losing season if it meant that our "quarterback of the future" was learning the game?

Campbell will start at some point this season but that time is not now. I look for him week 4 vs Jacksonville. If the Dallas game doesn't go well than maybe he 'backs up' Brunell during the Texans game.

I feel Gibbs picked his QB when he moved us up in the draft to get Campbell.
If Brunell continues to play like he is then set him down and let's get going with Jason is my opinion. peeace mike |
Re: Sacrifice the Season
I don't think so either. I believe Saunders is going to bring in another qb or draft one in this upcoming draft. Booty or Quinn is my best someone who can pick up this offense quickly and that can make all the throws. I would not be surprise if he tries to trade for Green next season.

i totally agree with saunders picking a new qb next year, we wont have the pick for a quinn or a booty but i would not be surprised if we go after a young talented starter now, like david carr they cant afford another screw up in the draft so i think they pick quinn |

I just think Gibbs will see that we need MORE from the qb position and Campbell is supposed to be 'the guy'. Even if Brunell plays 'mistake free' football, that may not be enough to win this year. The other teams in this division are stacked on O, and we will need to score alot of points. If we make it to our bye week and haven't seen Campbell yet and we have a .500 record or less, then I would start to worry about why JC isn't ready yet. Collins is NOT the answer and playing him does nothing for us. |

Re: Sacrifice the Season
so after one game its time for campbell? I think not. One loss doesnt mean its time to write off the season. If i remember correctly i dont think brunnell threw any ints last monday. I think he played pretty well. No need to panic and put campbell in there. Now if we lose i dont know 6 or 7 games then maybe it may be time to play him.

Re: Sacrifice the Season
Vaoutlaws: I think it's more based on Brunell's 2 years and 1 game here. While last year he had some good games early, he fell off yet again, the year before that it was the most dismal job by a QB I've ever seen.
|
Re: Sacrifice the Season
You don't start Campbell until at least one of two things happen: At the midpoint of our season, we already have 7 losses, or Brunell is hurt. We lose one game, ONE FREAKIN' GAME, and people want to sit Mark Brunell down ---- and that isn't even the BIGGEST REASON why we lost against Minnesota this past Monday night. Why don't we sit all of our starting secondary down? Our defensive line? Our special teamers? Do you think those guys did their best? How is starting a new QB going to help our secondary out? Have this conversation after we're mathematically out of the playoffs for Pete's sake. Mark Brunell gives us our best chance to win.

And MB having one triple-teamed receiver to throw to had nothing to do with his drop in his performanace. Sorry, not buying that. |

i agree, he did a decent job last year but hes so 50/50 we need more consistency at the debatbly the most important position on the team |
Re: Sacrifice the Season
this whole thread is stupid. after just 1, thats right 1 loss, you are ready to call it a season and hand the reins over to someone who hasnt played a down in this league? if you can recall just last season, we were just 1 win away from playing in the nfc championship. i know its along time ago, but im not jumping ship just yet

Re: Sacrifice the Season
It's way too early to be making this kind of decision, or even discussing it for that matter.

Re: Sacrifice the Season
i think alot of skins fans are just getting accustomed to losing. i remember along time ago when mediocre play was not acceptable. brunells play the last 3 years have not been acceptable by anyones standards. i dont think putting campbell in now would be a bad idea he could possibly not do any worse. brunell does not get us in the end zone period we may drive down 4 times but 1 td is unacceptable.
|
Re: Sacrifice the Season
3050 yards
23 TDs 10 INTs Not acceptable huh? wow. |
Re: Sacrifice the Season
Anyone blaming the loss to the Vikings on Brunell needs to get their head examined. He wasn't Peyton Manning, but the entire offense bears the responsibility for not getting it done in the redzone, and the defense deserves a LOT of blame for letting the Vikings have their way on third down.

Re: Sacrifice the Season
Im not defending or bashing Brunell..... but, I think eventually this offense will need to be able to score alot of points on a regular basis and i'm not sure he can do that. I think we need a playmaker at that position with the competition in this division. That is why I dont think MB will be our qb for long. Its not that he will play so bad that he loses the starting job he just wont be able make enough plays when it matters. we play some really tough teams in the near future in Dallas, Jacksonville, Giants, Colts, with a few scrub teams mixed in there. We will need to ba able to score alot of points in these games to be successful. JC might be the spark that puts takes this O to the next level.
But of course.......MB does deserve a shot....and he needs to come up big this week against Dallas. If he has another week like last week (where he didn't lose the game but he didnt do anything to win it either) we are in trouble. The qb's in this offense rutinely put up 300 yds passing days, Brunell put up less than 200.....AGAIN! |

Just FYI even if we do end up with the #1 pick its going to the Broncos, remember? We'll end up with whatever pick they have if we finish with a worse record than they do, and they'll end up with ours. Id already be gravely dissapointed from how the season would have gone, but how much would it sting to drop from #1 to like #25 for TJ Duckett? |

The point of the thread is to see how many people would agree that having a losing season would benefit us down the road if we started our "future" quarterback. The same thing the Giants did with Eli. |
Re: Sacrifice the Season
here we are one game into the season and people think we should sacrifice the season!? i think your coocoo for coconuts. brunell didn't lose the game. he didn't play sepectacular, but he also didn't throw 5 ints. ntil he consistantly throws ints. or something, hes our guy

Re: Sacrifice the Season
This season, without a doubt will be the make or break season for Brunell. We know JG is not going to start anyone other tran Brunell as long as he can walk, so as long as he feels we can get to the playoffs (and beyond) with Brunell then this will be his last opportunity. However I think that while no one should be thinking about jumping ship at this point, many still want to see more consistent play from the QB position. I have always been a supporter of Brunell, he did have a good year last year, but that was last year, and all the teams in our division have gotten better. There are no "easy" games on our schedule. We don't look to Campbell just yet, as long as we still have a chance, and one game into the season should not change that. Brunell must play better however, and starting tomorrow night. In our run for the playoffs last year "five in a row or we don't go" it was the running of Clinton Portis, and not the passing of Mark Brunell that got us on that roll, and in the end when we needed plays from the QB position they were absent.
It' plain and simple guys, Mark Brunell must play better for this team to reach it's ultimate goal. |

Why not? We have great depth at WR this year, plus a strong running game (as soon as Portis is 100% healthy.) It doesn't have to be all up to Brunell to score alot of points. |

Just because the Giants rushed Eli into the starting position with some success doesn't mean we should do it with Jason, and it also doesn't mean we would have the same success. Gibbs is about winning now along with building a future. For Pete's sake, how many more years are you skins fans willing to throw away for the sake of the future? Don't you want to have the guys out on the field now that will give the Redskins the best chance at winning? Don't you think Gibbs, Saunders, Williams, and the rest of the coaching stuff know what they're doing? |
Re: Sacrifice the Season
I just want to win, period. I want to stop looking for ways to fix us. We have a great team, great players and great coaches. We just need to WIN!!

Well they just signed Carr to a new extension when Kubiak took over in Houston. And for anyone to have a shot at Quinn in the next draft, they better have a worse record than Oakland. |

you remember "along time ago"?? mediocre play? get "us" in the endzone? don't take this as a personal attack..but I am not so sure that anything that you've posted here is or isn't based on your own personal disdain for Mark??.. there were several factors that went into MNF's letdown..and you haven't mentioned a single one of them..so cueing into the qb situation is not addressing a thing about the breakdown in blocking.. the soft play from the linebackers and safeties.. whatever Saunders was trying to do..or the simple fact that they were out-coached on the field.. This team allowed themselves to get in the position where stupid penalties and mental errors..affected the outcome..and caused the loss.. Only 19 pts given up by any defense..should win 80% of the games in this league.. I think until you can look around in an un-biased....manner..and avoid the quick-fix mentality you will only see what you want to see.. |
Re: Sacrifice the Season
I cant believe all of this. 1 game and the sky is falling. Brunnell is our best option at quarterback right now. He had a great year last year. The only way campbell starts is by injury. I cant see tossing the season for campbells development. At least not in week 2. Now with that being said should we be i dont know 2-8 at some point maybe but i really doubt thats going to happen.

Brady Quinn and ND is getting their ass handed to them by Michigan right now 34-14 at halftime. I guess under the reasoning of some on this thread, Brady Quinn and ND's season is over and they have no future because they lost one game and ND needs to get a new QB. |
Re: Sacrifice the Season
Absolutely right that Brunell is the problem and does nothing to help the team win.
He only got one little first down by running the ball. And of course he got lucky that he got just beyond the first down stripe. He should have been able to score for us by quarterback keepers. I mean, I can't imagine any other reason why can't they get in the end zone. And he's not a great passer. I mean compare: Brunell had 17 completions on 28 attempts Bledsoe had 19 completions on 33 attempts. Of course 3 were to the wrong team. And, of course, the reason that Portis is out is because Brunell threw an interception in preseason. So let's get rid of Brunell. If Campbell doesn't work out, maybe we can find a gem in the draft like Heath Shuler or Charley Batch. (Maybe we can even get Bledsoe if the Cowboy fans get tired of him.) |
Re: Sacrifice the Season
I think a common misconception is that this is some knee-jerk reaction to the first game. Mark Brunell didn't play poorly in the first game, but he also didn't play well. Personally, I thought Campbell should have been prepared and started this season. A new offense lots of new personel, it's the perfect time to make the switch. I can't buy Mark Brunell is a good quarterback. He isn't consistant, he kills drives, he doesn't seem to make many reads in a game. "Moss is covered, Cooley is covered, Portis is covered, he throws it away. A lot of the time, that's okay, but when you see him throw it away when he still has seconds left to make a play it's a bit discerning. He just seems to rush.
Plus -- it's time to see what Campbell has. This isn't the 80's, you can't just have someone like Steve Young sit on your bench for years upon years. If Campbell isn't playing when his rookie contract is coming up, do you think he'll stick around? If he doesn't get his chance like Ramsey, will he stick around? Nope, he'll be gone and it's a waste of a draft pick. |

A perfect time to switch QB's? We won our first playoff game in over 10 years and were elimanted in the second round of the playoffs by the NFC Champs. How was it a perfect time to throw out your incumbant QB? |
