Need some info
Hello all Redskin fans. I am coming to you, asking for your assistance with planning my trip to see the Skins. I am coming into town for the Redskins/Falcons game and wanted to know what airport would be the closest/best to fly into, as well some reasonable hotels to stay in that are near FedEx. I am hoping to do some sight seeing (White House, Washington Monument etc) as well, but the main purpose of the trip is to finally be able to Hail The Redskins live and in person. Any advice you can give me would be great. I am coming there with my brother (Falcons fan) and his good buddy (Another Skins fan).
I hope people in Fed Ex are not too mean to my bro, as we will be wearing all our NFL gear along with something to show our Canadian roots. But I hope he get harrassed a little in all good fun. I can not wait for this trip, it will be one to remember for the rest of my life. Thanks for your help. HAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Re: Need some info
Someone in DC may be able to help better but I can tell you from my point of view on my trip to DC last year. I stayed at Hilton Garden Inn which was right downtown walking distance to the Mall and White house. Also right across the street was the Metro. The Metro also goes to Reagan National airport which is pretty handy.... and you can take the Metro to the game as well. Like I said others may be able to help out more but that was my experience. Near the Metro so I could travel and right downtown to walk and sitesee

Re: Need some info
My brother and I got to see our first game last year against the 49'ers. We stayed at the Comfort Inn which is less than a mile and a half from the Stadium. It was more affordable than staying in DC.
The thing I remember most is walking into the stadium and having one of those "Rudy" moments. "This is the greatest sight these eyes have ever seen." Best football movie ever! |

Re: Need some info
Reagan National is the most convenient, but BWI is probably the cheapest option flight wise. BWI is only about 20-30 minutes from Washington DC during non-rush hour times.
Much cheaper to stay outside the city, and there are several hotels up and down the Beltway close to the stadium, as well as the subway (Metro). Check New Carrollton, Greenbelt, Beltsville, College Park for hotels. If not, you can always stay downtown, and FedEx is a quick Metro ride or drive away. When sightseeing downtown, use the Metro. So much easier than trying to drive and park. Plus it will dump you right in the middle of everything you want to see. I think you can still get all day passes for $5. There are more than several members who have season tickets, and tailgate before and after each game. Try to hook up with them and have some fun. |
Re: Need some info
Well the stadium is not in the best of areas...and if i were you i would not stay in PgCo.......sooo your best bet i say would be the Marriott On RT 355 in bethesda! from there you just hop on the highway and you are at the stadium in 20 minutes...-traffic of course!!!...haha my aim info is on my profile just send me an instant message if u need to know details and such!!
|
Re: Need some info
I always stay in Alexandria, VA when I visit D.C. and take the train...but I never went to a Skins game so I'm not sure how far FedEx is from there.
|
Re: Need some info
Well FedEX isnt in DC...its in Landover, MD. About 30-45 min from alexandria without traffic.....Great place to say tho!! i really like VA...
|
Re: Need some info
Basically on gamedays there is a ton of traffic on the highway 495-95 headed into FedEx Field. Huge stadium=alot of traffic!!! You might consider staying somewhere in Bowie, MD or Annapolis, MD. DC, MoCo and places like that have the most traffic headed into the stadium....but bowie and annapolis are on the other side and have a little less commute time.....
|
Re: Need some info
Like someone said Greenbelt is good because Hotels are cheaper. And your only a $25 taxi ride from the stadium. Not to mention there is a Metro station right there to take you into D.C.
Your first trip to a Redskins home game is always something very special. Have a great time. And don't worry about the Redskins fans there a classy bunch and shouldn't abuse your Bro to bad.;) :food-smil :httr: |
Re: Need some info
Search for "New Carrollton". I forget what the hotel name is but that's the location. It's like you get right on the onramp and FedEx is just a stop or two away.
|
Re: Need some info
Dude he is from Canada. New Carrolton would be too much of a shock.... if he wants to stay in that area...College Park would be the best bet.....but i would really advise against it man!!
|
Re: Need some info
You guys rock!!!! Thanks for the advice. I can not wait until that game. I drove from Calgary (hope you know where that is) to Seattle to watch the Skins play the Seahawks a few years back with the same guys and we had a blast. Skins won of course! I can not wait to walk into FedEx and hear 90,000+ cheering. I am sure I will have a Rudy moment for sure....
Glad to hear my bro won't get harrassed too bad... He will need a little bit though. Actually great suggestion about hooking up with some Warpath boys who are tailgating before the game. I know in Seattle, we could not find anyone to tailgate with which sucked.... I will make sure to post stuff once we get closer to the game. And yes I am from Canada and would rather not be in the "hood" when I am there.... lol. Keep the suggestions coming. I want to make this trip a huge success for both us and of course the Redskins! I am 1-0 after all... |

And yes I am from Canada and would rather not be in the "hood" when I am there.... lol.
LoL yea dude...bethesda is one of the nicer areas in MD.....but yes the hotel is actually pretty nice for a marriott....its right off rt 355......most areas in PG co are not favorable ....i mean im sure nothing will happen but yea...haha just send me an IM if u need info......ill be more than happy to help.....I love the skins fans from different areas :-) makes me happy.... |

Yeah, the Comfort Inn on Duke Street has an IHOP inside of it and you get coupons for it. The neighboring Days Inn give you coupons too. I love pancakes. |

Seriously, I think it's a Hyatt, but there was no "hood" anywhere close by. It is where I stay when I come to games. It's like in a business park, so it's nothing but office buildings and other Skins fans around. I stronlgy suggest there. Browser Check I think this might be the place, name was changed recently apparently. It's right off 495. |
Re: Need some info
Some of those areas close to the stadium have become pretty nice. My dad is building a bunch of condos in that area and I was thinking about buying one; but alas, I'm too poor.
|
Re: Need some info
Your dad is building condos.
You're not poor. |
Your dad is building condos.

Re: Need some info
There ya go. :biggthump

Re: Need some info
There is a Hampton Inn close by as well. Located in an office park where you can practically spit at FEDEX Field out the back door.
My wife and I stayed there in April of 2005. On business, I've stayed at a Hampton Inn, 599 Massachusetts Ave NW, Was. DC 20001 Phone 202 842-2500 Only 7-8 blocks from the Mall, and only a couple of blocks from the Metro. |
Re: Need some info
Okay, thanks for the info. I just wanted to give everyone an update (not sure if you really care or not) but I have ordered my tickets. I will be sitting right behind the Redskins bench, section 102 row 24. Right on the 40 yeard line. I should have my tickets in hand next week.
I CAN NOT BELIEVE I AM GOING TO BE SITTING IN FEDEX IN A FEW SHORT WEEKS..... HAIL!!!!!!!! |
Re: Need some info
Fly into Dulles and stay at the closest Marriott.
|
Re: Need some info
I found a supper cheap flight into DCA that gives me tons of time to spend in DC/Maryland etc. Now just looking for a hotel that is cheap as well. I think we are going to a Wizards or Capitals game one night as well. I think this metro idea is a good thing except it seems like there are a few different metro lines. I think taking cabs (everywhere) will be super pricey.

Cabs are VERY pricey. Metro is great, and don't worry about the "lines". It's a lot easier then it sounds. Just get a metro map. It's very simple, really. |
Re: Need some info
Sweet. Thanks. I am so pumped, and can not wait for my Rudy moment (as noted above). All I am going to be wearing the whole weekend is Redskins gear, and a little Canadian stuff so people know I am Canadian.
|
Re: Need some info
Are you going to rent a car or looking to use the Metro and how long are you going to stay? The reason I ask is because it would change where I would stay and several people a assuming that you will have a car. I've never used the Metro to go to a game but to get around DC its the only way to go.

Re: Need some info
As a few others have indicated, Bethesda is nice. I live in Prince Georges County and reside less than 4 miles from FedEx Field. Like DaveyFoSho posted, P.G. County is a place you should try to avoid.
Ronald Reagan International Airport (DCA) is the most convenient airport to fly in to. There are a few nice (some upscale) hotels in Crystal City (Arlington, Va) that are only a few blocks from the airport. Most can be found on Jefferson Davis Highway. In addition, those hotel's are approximately a mile from Arlington National Cemetery, and about two miles from the White House. To list a few: Marriott Crystal Gateway, Embassy Suites, Sheraton, Hampton Inn & Suites, Holiday Inn, etc. Price depends on avalibility so try to book in advance to take advantage of the best rates. The best value will probably be found at Hampton Inn. It's a nice, newly remodeled facility. Most offer shuttle bus service to/from the airport, as well as various tourist spots. Since you're wanting to visit DC, you might consider a hotel there. Arlington, Virginia VA - Hotels, Motels - See All Discounts To get to the stadium, I would suggest taking the blue line on the metro. Exit @ the Morgan Station. You're walking distance from the stadium. I think the station @ Largo Centre has a shuttle bus service (to the stadium) however, I'm not sure if that still holds true or not. Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority I hope this information has been helpful. Keep us posted. WARNING: On game day this place gets a lil wild but, we'll treat you to one hell of a game! See ya at FedEx Field. :) WARNING II: lol, Before any of you guys start to assume , ..... "No, I do not work for the city of Arlington, nor do I work at any hotels." lol (gosh... lol, I feel as if I've just written my first book) |

We will not be renting a car. Relying on the Metro and maybe cabs to get us around. We have a few things planned for the trip. Might go check out a Caps or Wizards game on Friday or Saturday. Monday or Saturday is probably when we are going to check out the monuments etc. Sunday is all about football. Heading to the Stadium 3 hours early to hopefully find a few tailgating parties and soak in the atmosphere. We would like to stay in a place around some sports pubs and malls. Also our Flight will not be leaving until probably around 6 on Monday so we have to be able to carry our luggage for a few hours on Monday. All of you have given great info (a tad confusing cause so many suggestions) I want to thank everyone for helping. I am thinking of staying in Maryland or in DC as it seems to be the best price and nearest to FedEx. |
Re: Need some info
Hey CanadianSkin,
I visited DC for the first time last week for the Dallas game. My advice: Pay the extra to stay in the City. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Capitol. Its 1 block from a metro station. I think you can get an online price for about $150 a night. The metro is easy to use and gets you most places. I recommend putting $10 on a Metro Fair Card and using that. You can walk from the metro to Fedex field too! dont wait in line for the bus. |
Re: Need some info
I hardley ever post anything but when i see people putting down good old P.G. county i have to step in.There is nothing wrong with staying in Greenbelt and I should know because that is where i grew up.Its not "the hood" or even anything close. So basically im saying dont be scared, you have nothing too worry about.
Also, while you are in D.C you should check out the air and space museum. It is located in the mall near the capital building and is free admission.I dont know if you are interested in aviation but there is all kinds of historical aircraft just hanging from the cielings (like the spirit of st.luis).Also there are some flight simulators that you can get in and spin yourself around and do flips which is pretty fun.You can also experience the joy of spending 8 or 9 dollars on a mcdonalds "value" meal .....yeah. good luck and hail to the redskins |
Re: Need some info
CanadianSkin,
I hope you have a blast and I am sure you will. Cheer loudly! |
Re: Need some info
There is nothing to rival your first Fed Ex trip. I got there around 5 hours early, much to the annoyance of my Ex.
Yeah, Ex. |
Re: Need some info
Yeah My brother and I are totally pumped. I will probably have to make a similar trek in a few years to Hotlanta, when the Skins play the Falcons in Georgia. But this is going to be something to remember for a life time.
Do not worry I will be loud and proud, and so will my bro (for the guys who are going to lose). |

I don't think anybody was putting the entire area of PG County down. Most of the post's (listed in this thread) were from people offering advice, with CANADIANS safety in mind. It wasn't a personal attack against any specific county, as a whole. I reside in PG County therefore, I can't grasp why you would think Central Avenue, Marlboro Pike, Donnell Drive, Walters Lane and Pennsylvania Avenue are safe. Perhaps you should come back and visit! |
Re: Need some info
Here's one thing you should do. Take 395 out of DC and take the Crystal City exit. You'll see a 7-11, and right next to it is a place call the Crystal City Restaraunt. They open for breakfast (at least they did a couple of years ago) around 930. Steak and eggs are great there... and its worth the drive ;)

Perhaps you should come back and visit!
I never said that all of P.G county was fine , just that it was fine too stay in Greenbelt. It would be cheaper and more convienent than staying in the city or V.A.By the way, I have been to all the places you mentioned except Donnell Drive (never heard of it, is it around largo like the rest?) and amazingly enough have come out unscathed so I suppose thats why i think its safe. |
Re: Need some info
Love Them Hogs: Donnell Drive maps North/South. If you exit the beltway @ Pennsylvania Avenue and travel West, the first traffic (on Penn. Avenue) is Forestville Road, the second traffic light is Donnell Drive.
Greenbelt is much safer than any of the other area's near the stadium, yet, I think the hotel rate's are more costly v's Crystal City. Then again, rates also vary depending on the availability when one books a reservation. In the past, the Redskin players and coaching staff have utilized the Marriott in Greenbelt. I expect there's a vast array of fan's there too. Regardless of which route he takes, I hope CANADIAN has a fantastic time while he's here. |
