T.J. Duckett watch
Okay, so Duckett looked like he was inactive for a second week in a row. Now, I'm certainly not one that feels like he's been or bust or anything like that. But this could be an interesting development with the way the RBs and the O-line are playing.
My point is, if a key running back goes down elsewhere in the NFL later this year, and again provided that we maintain our health and productivity, it's possible we could part ways with Mr. Duckett. |

I think him going is better for the team. I think him coming in left a bad taste in the mouths of Betts and Portis.... He's a great player, I wish him well if he goes. |
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
why not, wouldnt he be worth a 3,4th rounder pick. However I think we beat the Giants we keep TJ and have an ace in our pocket in case he is needed as we storm into the playoffs.
|
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
him coming has really made betts play better, plus duckett doesnt know the offense
|
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
He could be added into the mix.
|
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
Again, I'm not saying he's not useful or that he's a bust but granted he may have some value down the road.

Haaa Hess....he will deff b a part of our O soon. Have no answer why he's inactive but doubt much longer |
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
It would be nice to see him actually PLAY before we trade him away. Can't understand why we gave up a 3rd round pick for him and he's inactive for two weeks.

Insurance.............. |
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
He is inactive due to the tight end situation. I think with Cooley and Fauria getting healthy he will be active soon. He is EXCELLENT insurance.
|
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
We'll be glad we have him next season when Ladell Betts signs that fat contract with his new team.
Blame Duckett's inactive role on the NFL and its arcane roster rules. |
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
For two weeks in a row, I've forgotten to bench Duckett and take Portis off the bench in my fantasy football team.
I need to hire someone to run my fantasy team, handle the day-to-day details |
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
He is insurance. With the way our offense obvously needs a good Rb in there I think we keep him in case Betts or Portis goes down. I love Rock but i don't want to see him getting 7-12 carries regularly because of injuries.

Re: T.J. Duckett watch
Duckett is just an insurance policy right now.
With the way Betts is running and Cartwright returning kicks full-time, it's going to be pretty hard to get Duckett suited up. |
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
Betts is up next year right? Someone will pay him alot more than we will with portis around. Duckett will be the number two next year, and like said before he is great to have in the pocket incase either of our main backs get hurt.

I think we can safely assume Duckett will be inactive for all games where there is not a significant injury to a RB (or a really bad game from Betts where he fumbles like 3 times or something). No team can afford to use 4 roster spots on RB's. We will have Portis, Betts and Rock active for every game they are healthy. I like to have TJD in the wings but I wish we could somehow get him in the mix regularly. |
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
Can TJ beat up on people like Brandon Jacobs can?

duckett is up next year, and i'm not sure he'll want to stay if he's inactive for 16 games. betts is a good pass catcher, duckett, not so much. as far as talent, duckett wins and he's a nice pounder with surprising speed, but betts has found a role as the 3rd down pass catching back here (he and chester taylor are basically clones). |
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
Ditto that Guy. Betts seems to finding his groove in Saunders offense. If I had my druthers, I would keep Betts over Duckett.
|
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
Duckett is a nice insurance policy right now. Before the year is out I think he'll play an important role. Right now it's just a numbers game preventing him from dressing.
Gibbs raised a good point in the presser, if they are paying these guys why can't they play them? Does anyone know the rationale behind having to keep 7 guys inactive each week? I found an interesting article that brings up the same question. NFL.com - NFL News |
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
I still think if a viable trade opportunity came up before the deadline the Skins would weigh their options with Duckett. Of course, all things being equal.
|
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
He was mainly signed because they were unsure about how Portis would rehabilitate from his injury. Now that Portis has fully recovered and Betts is playing as solidly as he is, it seems as though it was a bad move in hindsight. I definitely think if a team made the right offer (a 3rd rounder) the Skins would think seriously about letting him go.

Re: T.J. Duckett watch
Of course, we're one nicked Portis shoulder or a Betts hammy from seeing a lot of Duckett. You never know, especially in the NFL.

Exactly. And with their injury history, it's not so far fetched to imagine one or both of them missing some time at some point this year. |
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
True that. It will be an interesting side story as the season unfolds.
I'll say this, Rock and Betts have had a fire under their butts since he's come to town. |
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
With the way Betts is playing right now, will we be able to afford him next year? Is it just me or is Betts a better back when he is playing with Portis in the game as well. He didn't seem to be very good in the Dallas game but with Portis splitting time with him, he's making better runs.
I think we try to sign Betts now and trade TJ for our draft pick back. We need it. |
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
Although I started the thread what about Duckett, I think we hold on to him for now. In fact, I would expect them to do so. Still a trade later on down the road wouldn't shock me. If the Skins had to choose, let's say, during the off season between the two, I would think they would lean toward Betts. Simply because he's been a Redskin for a while now.
I would agree, that Betts is a good change of pace back. I don't like how the guys calling the game Sunday tried to compare him and Portis. They really are two different backs. |
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
My guess is he the style of runner Al Saunders likes.
He stays! |
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
I still don't see it making alot of sense. I say trade him if somebody offers us a decent deal.
Every team in the nfl can say that we're just 2 injuries away from being in trouble. |
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
Obviously, I don't have all the information the coaches have, but big picture, I'd go with TJ over Betts.
My feeling is the size and proven success in short yardage is something that fits better with Portis than having two, relatively undersized RBs. In fact, if we had Duckett on the field during the 3rd and 1 right before the 2 minute, I don't think the game goes to OT. |

What we do know, is that Portis and Betts are finding a real groove in Al's offense. Not to mention that battering ram named Sellers. |

I agree that my post was wildly speculative. However, what isn't conjecture is: -We didn't make the 3rd down that would have essentially sealed the game. -We have been absolutely horrible in 3rd & 1 situations (3rd & 2 and 3rd & 3 have been shockingly bad as well) this year. -TJ is a proven dominator in short yardage situations. So while it is conjecture as to what would have happened, I don't think it is outrageous to suggest that the probability is that TJ has a better chance in 3rd and 1 than Betts does. |
Re: T.J. Duckett watch
Agreed, agreed.
I don't think it was wildly speculative, I was just trying to use a $50 word:) |
