Let's talk defense
I thought this was our best defensive effort of the year. Odd to say that about agame in which they gave up 30 points but if we look at it and analyze what went down the points aren't a good indication of the overall performance.
13 of the points were basically set up by turnovers and or poor field position from the offense early on. In fact in the first half the defense was dominate except two plays. Eliminate those 2 plays and we are winning 14-3. In the second half they held a good offense in check for 20 minutes or so. Then big plays hurt us again. The big plays realy got us. Jax was 2/13 of third down---that is sick I believe they had 33 yards rushing---stiflng Carter and Daniels finally showed up and Golston and Montgomery are really looking like quality players. Griffin asserted himself more than past weeks. Most importantly Williams blitzed a lot more than he had. He looked like he actually had some confidence in the secodary. If we can eliminate the big plays then that game isn't even close. I think this was a good step foward for the D. |
Re: Let's talk defense
Honestly, the push up the middle has been insane since Golston has had more playing time.
|
Re: Let's talk defense
Yeah Golston really looks like a quality player for us. Good scouting there.

What round did we get him in? I know he was a 2nd day pick, which makes him seem like a steal now. As far as the defense as a whole is concerned: they need to start tackling better. Maybe Williams should make them practice by tackling a greased pig or something, because they really need to stop giving up these big plays by letting the opponent slip through their hands. |
Re: Let's talk defense
I agree it was their best effort even though the score doesn't reflect that.
The Jags had NO running game to speak of. Their offense came down to big plays and they were hot early. The D definitely showed some signs of life. They got some pressure, some sacks, and they took away the running game. I feel alot better about the D after that one, even though they gave up 30. |
Re: Let's talk defense
Hey, don't forget about Demetrius Evans. He played the pass rush very well. The secondary deserves to continue to draw criticism on coverage and tackling, though. Oh by the way, Sean Taylor is officially super-human.
|
Re: Let's talk defense
Let's at least get his name straight, it's Demetric Evans.
|
Re: Let's talk defense
SEAN TAYLOR IS A GOD!!!! That man is unreal and everytime I see him hit someone I feel so lucky he is wearing a Redskin uniform!!!!! It was really a team effort yesterday. Everyone had a great game. All of the Skins came together and did exactly what they set out to do. Way to go SKINS!!!!
|
Re: Let's talk defense
I was just listening to Riggo on Skins.com. He's like I take my helmut off to Portis-TOTAL FOOTBALL PLAYER.
ST-lines up, gives you a missile shot over the middle. Goes back to the huddle, and comes out does it again. NO DANCIN', NO celebrating, just play after play ASS kickin'. Golston is a find! Skins have turned the corner I love Monday's like this |

LOL! See what 3 hours of oft-interrupted sleep will do? I'm fortunate enough to remember my own name today. |
Re: Let's talk defense
Sean Taylor. Man, now he's laying wood on special teams! I don't know how that guy held on to that ball though. And speaking of special teams, isn't Rock turning out to be a little diamond in the rough>
|
Re: Let's talk defense
I agree, the defense was pretty damn solid. As for the score, remember a pick and fumble deep in our territory resulted in 10 or 14 points?
|
Re: Let's talk defense
Not only that, but the little end zone dance after the touch resulting in a penalty gave Jax a short field on the ensuing kickoff.
|
Re: Let's talk defense
12th man, that sig is hilarious...
I thought the poor tackling is NOT what we're about, but we were baning up all of their player, except that mammoth freak of a reciever who we decapitated and knocked retarded in the endzone... that guy has balls... A few tackles and the game is a blowout... 3 guys around jones-drew on his TD and the one slant route that posey got beat (to be expected by a wideout) that went for a TD, we missed him like 6 times! I DO think we werent as afraid of them because all their recievers can do is jump and break tackles... they lack speed, which can kill an underdeveloped secondary on a team that commits to blitzing and leaves corners on an island... I don't think we're out of the woods yet on D, but as long as our Offense is clicking and keeping them off the field I think we'll do great! (Didn't figure Id be saying that 2 years ago, lol) |
Re: Let's talk defense
Defense is showing improvement each week. When Springs returns and he shakes off the rust there should be more improvement, but it wont be immeadiate. Carlos Rogers was getting picked on some. Although while Springs is out, Carlos takes the other teams #1 WR, which there aren't too many people in this world that can shut down a #1 WR. I rather Carlos give up the underneath stuff as he has been doing, than give up the long TD.
Rumph has found a home with the Skins. Coach Williams really likes him. Taylor and Archuleta are starting to play well together. The one question mark I have with our Defense is defending against a good power running game. The Texans and Jag's do not have a power running game. The Giants game will be a good test to see where we are. Both our offense and our defense are a work in progress. We will improve as the year goes on. |
Re: Let's talk defense
Three things I look for in the Defense as the season goes on.
- Archuletta to get more comfortable in the system, esp. in pass coverage. - The return of Springs to prevent Wright and Rumph from being owned by opposing receivers - More pressure from the D-line. It was good for Andre Carter to taste blood today. Should boost his confidence, which has been low lately, with all the criticism about him being just another an overpaid FA acquisition. I agree that this was a good game for the Defense despite the Faguars scoring 30. The two turnovers by the offense put us in poor field position, and that can't be attributed to the D. Anytime you hold a team to about 300 total yards, the defense has done its job. |
Re: Let's talk defense
It was also nice to see Daniels get into the mix with the sack and INT. He played great down the stretch last year, we need him to continue to step up and make plays.
|
Re: Let's talk defense
How did that receiver hold on to the ball in the end zone...ST and i believe it was warrick holdman sandwiched him and his helmet flew...:-(
|
Re: Let's talk defense
Yea it was pretty weird to see them kick off from the 15.....also after the titans guy did his little stompy did u see where dallas got to kick the ball?? haha the opp 40 yard line
|
Re: Let's talk defense
For as much as we criticize Wright and Rumph for being owned game after game, these guys have stepped up some. The move to strip the ball out of TOs hands in the endzone during the Dallas game tells you something about Rumph. He's a football player alright - with time, hopefully a short time, he will be a decent corner in this system.
Would anyone be surprised if Wright leads the team in INTs when the season is over? |
Re: Let's talk defense
Next week should be a true test for the secondary. The Giants are as good an offense as we will face this year. I'm confident that our LBs can handle Shockey, and that Taylor will lay the wood on Plaxico and turn him into a non-factor. Toomer, on the other hand, is Rogers' responsibility, and that scares me.
If Kate Mara sings the national anthem, that game's over - we shouldn't even bother showing for it. |
Re: Let's talk defense
I expect a tough game followed by a nice Redskins post game party to celebrate the win.
This week the story will be surgical D, multiple sacks and plenty of scared WR's crossing our secondary flapping their arms and wincing from the big hits. |

Re: Let's talk defense
My only concern is the team of commentators we get. I may need a sick sack this week.
|
Re: Let's talk defense
We still have some trouble covering the middle in pass D. That is a big deal, but I agree that GW is on it, and we'll get better as the year goes on.
Taylor was all over the field yesterday. He had sick hits in the pass game, the run game, and on specials. Wow. Hope the D line continues to gell. If Golston and Griffen continue to get a push in the middle and stuff the run, we'll be in business. I'd still like to see Rocky get some time, but I guess if it aint broke... The thing that has killed us all year is big plays. To me, that's not so bad, because it means we play solid most of the time. That's something that can be fixed. And with our O coming together, it will help the D. But it's not there yet. |

Obviously you do not watch him much. That is just dead wrong Rings. If you watch that play again, Sean was coming up to stop the 1st down. I was 3rd and long. When the ball was thrown, he was already out of the play. WTF.. Had nothing to do with him attacking the ball carrier. |
Re: Let's talk defense
yeah the D will step it up as the season continues so i'm not worried. we just beat what could be a playoff team in the afc. i'm happy. and i love santana!

Re: Let's talk defense
I can't beleive no one has mentioned how poorly Carlos Rodger has played all year... He was horrible again yesturday for the 4th week.
|
Re: Let's talk defense
yeah i'm not gonna even about the negatives until later this week.
|
Re: Let's talk defense
I just hope that the fact he has been forced into the number 1 cb is the reason he has been so bad

Keep the faith, he'll continue to develop, he's learning from the best |
Re: Let's talk defense
OJT for Rogers. But I didn't think he looked THAT bad. He's not getting much safety help, no doubt. It's been 2 steps forward, 1 step back, IMO.
Also, Leftwhich (sp) made some nice throws. He's got a strong arm and can hit that nice 12-15 yard out. And that throw where Taylor took the guy's helmet off was right on the money. As for ST and bad angles, it only sticks out becuase we're so used to him making those plays. He makes a lot of sticks in the run game, and that requires good angles as he comes up from the secondary. Yes, he was caught on that one TD, but that guy is a likety-split little guy. Warning to the cowboys--ST is only going to get better. Meanwhile, the sainted Roy is only getting older... |
Re: Let's talk defense
Have you seen roy this year I know ST is getting better but roy is also getting better he's only 26 C'mon
|
Re: Let's talk defense
yeah, definately their best game. Our secondary still kinda sucks right now though. Rogers had a bad game and Taylor had a bad game (for Sean Taylor). Curry Burns probably shouldn't be on the field either. (he was being used where GW wanted to use Prioleau before injury, subbing him in on passing downs to protect archuleta from blown coverages).
|
Re: Let's talk defense
where the heck did burns come from? he was horrible. and golston gets better and better with each week.
|
Re: Let's talk defense
I'm worried that Sean Taylor won't be able to play more than five seasons. Some guys have a few hits in a game or a highlight stick in every other game. This guy has a world shattering collision EVERY time he makes a play on the ball. It's a tremendous combination of courage and skill. He plays a game that I, as a fan, am not familiar with.
It's got to catch up with him though, right? I mean he's gotta be sore today, right? How cool would it be if he isn't. I wanted to add a comment about Rock Cartwright as well. How smart is Gibbs? Most coaches put a speedster back there and hope they break one or two runs a year. Gibbs puts a bowling ball back there who over the course of the season will pick up maybe 300 more yards than the sprinter by overpowering people. And he got a TD against Dallas anyway. |

Re: Let's talk defense
ST is the most fun defensive player I have ever watched....he is in on every play, whether or not he makes the tackle he is ALWAYS there.
I have to disagree about Carlos, he seems to be doing a pretty decent job as a number 1 corner being a second year player on a team with hardhitting (not coverage) safeties. Golston is a beast, I wouldnt mind seeing him starting permenantly. Archuletta is starting to look comfortable, and he said it helps that he was able to blitz, that it gets him into the flow of the game, and when Springs is back u better believe he'll be doing plenty of blitzing. Wright and Rumph look better every game, I will be more then comfortable with them at nickle when Springs returns. Andre Carter is coming into his own, dont be surprised to see him with 9 sacks at the end of the year, he is a strong physical guy, and dont forget that he has been up against some of the best olineman in the league. D looked better, I expect them to manhandle the Giants. As long as Tiki is stifled, and we get to Manning the Gmen dont have a chance. |
