How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
I don't know if anyone else noticed but how god awful were the announcers from the game? They couldn't pronounce names right, their stats weren't correct. Randy Cross even made a statement saying "If anyone tuned in to see a boring game this isn't the game for you." I mean are you kidding me these guys should not be announcing NFL games. Just wanted to see if anyone else noticed how bad they were.

Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
Enberg is old but Cross is just an idiot sometimes. Enberg used to be one of the best but age eventually takes its toll.
|
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
Welcome aboard Skinsterps, Yeah these guys do not play off each other well. Enberg is a legend but it is about time for him to hang it up. Cross has always been bad about driving home an obvious point for whole quarters. I dont really care who announces our games as long as we win.
That isn't true, how about a couple of strippers? |
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
It was truly nauseating. Worst part for me was their man-love for the Jags during the game.
|
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
I thought they did faily well. I know a few times Enberg got some names wrong, but I think they did OK. I think they were definately PRO SKINS through out the telecast. Cross was giving us credit for pushing the Jags around and kept saying how physical we were. I thought they did a decent job. I honostly was so into the game, they could have has pee wee herman and screech calling the game and it would have been ok.

Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
At any point did either of them refer to Mark Brunell as Steve Brunell? I think it was the first game last year that some announcer kept doing that for some odd reason. It's been a running joke with me and my friend's ever since.

Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
Here's another pitiful attempt to wax poetic and dramatize the Moss TD by les Carpenter of the post (see page 2 of the article)

I thought Moss caught the ball between Brian Williams and Deon Grant. |

I believe that was Daryl "Moose" Johnston who referred to Brunell as "Scott Brunell" |

I think he was saying Steve Brunell and Scott Springs in the same game. At least Scott was Shawn's dad's name (I think) so I suppose that one can pass. |

They were not very good so I switched to Sonny, Frank, & Larry. Boy have Sonny & Frank gone downhill. I couldnt listen to them either so I just muted the whole thing. I think the skins need a completely new radio play by play team. |
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
Any game that is on CBS sucks, the game picture was too dark I couldnt see where the ball was on field goals, the play by play is horrible, it just seems old and outdated. I switched tvs 3 different times trying to get a clear picture, it seemed murky. Games that are on FOX, NBC, & ESPN always seem brighter and clearer. I hate when we play AFC teams, cause then we are usually on CBS. But the skins beating the crap out of the JAGS still makes my week!!!!!
|
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
I think Enberg is showing his age unfortunately. He used to be one of the best around.
Cross is just a jackass, never cared for him much. He thought he was so right on the fumble, I was just laughing saying there was no way they should oveturn it since there was no definitive angle that showed conclusive evidence. By the way, all those stats they kept throwing out about the Jags being 11-0 when this happens, or 21-1 when this happens, blah, blah. You can throw those out the window, thank you. |
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
I thought that they gave the props to the skins for man handling the Jags. The only point they made about the Jags is how good the D was and how we where having our way with them. I liked when one of them made the comment about how we blasted the D man ten yards back.
I believe that was Daryl "Moose" Johnston who referred to Brunell as "Scott Brunell"
Nope. Moose kept correcting Dick Stockton when he'd say Scott Brunell. I actually like Moose as a color commentator, because he's low-key and straight to the point. I was at a bar, so I didn't hear much of the game announcers. I used to be a big fan of Dick Stockton until last year's said incident. I'm not a big fan of any announce crews. Buck and Aikman are tolerable, as are Gumbel and Simms. The rest I tend to ignore unless they say something ignorant. CBS blows when it comes to coverage. I still don't understand why they don't have all their games in HD. Fox is able to do it, and ESPN/ABC has almost all their college and NFL games in HD... |
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
I thought is ridiculous how they kept throwing out those absurd stats like, when Jacksonville is on the road in the month of October and the sun has gone down, they beat opponents, blah, blah....I was like why don't you just the Skins are going to lose and get it over with!!!
|
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
Ah, that was the one. Reminded me of the MNF curse "When Parcells is winning in the 4th qtr he's 73-0"
Well, not now he's not M*********r! |

Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
Unfortunately, I don't have Sunday Ticket...so if CBS has the national doubleheader, I'm sometimes forced to watch a game non-HD. But it blows. Even on my 32 inch non-HD TV, the HD channels (thank you Comcast for allowing me the HD DVR and not pay for HD channels) are 100 times better.

Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
They couldn't have been worse than Huff. He kept screaming yesterday, "Chris Cooley is hurt. He's hurt! He's hurt! He got hurt trying to make a tackle. This is huge!"
Of course, never mind that Cooley doesn't play D, and he was standing on the sidelines when Curry Burns was the one who got hurt. |
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
Are Sonny and Sam getting old or are they just drunk?

Sam, I've been told by very reliable sources, dozes off to such an extent that they shut his mic off because he starts snoring.

Jeez I know they don't want to kick a legend out of the booth but c'mon, if the man can't do his job anymore it's time to go. I know people love these guys and they're legends, but I've never been able to stomach them for an entire game. I'm just glad I have the Sunday Ticket so I don't have to listen to them anymore. |
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
I don't know these guys very well, but the one that doesn't sound like Al Michaels was a douchebag. I swear if I had to hear him say, "That wasn't a fumble" one more fucking time I was gonna drive up to Landover and deck him. I mean, it did give us something to laugh about... (when scobee kicked the FG that almost missed, you heard wind in a mike, as if he were in the stands blowing on the ball to keep it in) but if I hadn't been watching with my step-dad on his directv I wouldve listened to Sonny and Sam.
|
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
ha yeah, it's totally Larry Michaels and two Grandpa Simpsons up there. Dagnabbit!
|
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
Sonny and Sam...combine age with scotch and cigars, and you have your reason why they are the way they are. At least Sonny is semi-coherent throughout the whole game. They obviously wake Sam up for defensive sets...

Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
They were dreadful. They referred to Ladell Betts as Clinton Portis at least three times. They said it was third down when it was 4th at least once. They said that the Jags had made a first down when they were almost five yards short. The only adjective they could muster for the Jags were that they were "teale". "If they're in teale, they are going to hit you hard. They're a teale swarm. He's been a teale blur all game." AWFUL!!!!
|
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
I'm glad someone else caught that, I was beginning to think I'd imagined it....:censored:
|
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
They could not tell the differnce between Moss, Lloyd, and ARE. It was horrible.
|
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
they prolly should not do late games. too close to their bedtime.
|
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
im really suprised no one has mentioned "the fits" yet. if i had to hear those idiots talk one more time about "the fits" on the line. and how you have to fit in the fits, and avoid the fits, and move the fits. please tell me im not the only one that was going crazy as they dragged this topic over almost three quarters!!

Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
I listened to Sonny, Sam and Michaels and I was disgusted with the engineer of the game. Granted the fan noise was phenomenal but on all 3 Moss touchdowns I could not hear what happened after the catch because of the crowd noise. Also I'd like to have these guys replaced with John Riggins and Doc Walker.

You noticed that too then. Every big play I had no idea what was happening because the crowd noise muffled out the playcalling |
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
Randy Cross is a putz, Dick is aging, so he needs someone else to help him out. Randy Cross is not that guy.
Is it that hard to find good sportscasters? |

I wonder if there was something wrong with the mic system because where we were sitting the audio sounded muffled, sort of like Charlie Brown's teacher. A couple of times after the ref finished, we we're like "OK, we'll take your word for it." |
Re: How bad were Dick Enberg and Randy Cross?
Enberg was the top man at NBC for so long that his voice says "big game" for me. I like the emotion that he brings in on big plays. He also did Super Bowl 17 (with Merlin Olsen?) which sticks in my brain. I guess I am getting old, too.
Randy Cross is actually not as bad as he used to be, if you can believe that. Whe he first started it was like being waterboarded. The worst case of ex-jock syndrome in history. If you look at the games, most of the announcers are terrible, which I find unbelievable when you consider the money involved in NFL broadcasting rights. Joe Buck is good. When he does Redskins games he sounds like he ONLY does Redskins games, which is a tribute to his preparation. He knows all the backups and is hip to all the local chatter surrounding the team. Whe he sees #46 for us he knows its Betts and he is ready to rattle off what his role is and has been, how we use him, etc. Part of that is technology and being of a generation that is used to it. I'm sure Buck is very quick with the laptop. Other than him, it's pretty dismal. Even Madden gets under my skin these days. If you want an example of an announcer being unobjective, listen to the two Cowboys/Redskins games from this year and last. He was crushed last year when we won. On Santana's second score he just said, "Unbelievable" (in a disappointed way). It was all about the Cowboys losing the game rather than the Redskins making great plays to win it. This year he gave his little spiel about how the Redskins "just aren't very good". He had us dead and buried in week 2. I think he's still a little pissed about that alumni game in 1964. |
