Gibbs Press Conference:
did he say something solid either way about benching Brunell?
|
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
Didn't he say after the game that Mark Brunell had an awesome game? I don't think he would bench him after saying that.
|
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
He clearly said he would not be benching Brunell from what I heard.
|
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
Anyone hoping for a Brunell benching is getting their hopes up. Campbell will not touch the field until they are eliminated from the playoffs (barring injury).

Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
One of the things Gbbs said when asked about the offseason changes to the decision making structure, especially about Al Saunders:
"You can't go back in life... we put a lot of thought into that... sometimes in life you don't get what you want... but to me, you can't go back. I think those decisions were made the right way; they were made for the right reasons..." He does say around this part that he thinks Al can "help" the team, but it sure seems vague and not like a vote of confidence to me. Doesn't it mean something very significant that he didn't say it was the right decision to have Saunders make the play calls... only that the decision was made the right WAY, and for the right REASONS; but he didn't say it was RIGHT. Big difference!! Thoughts? |

Give him Trent Green, then decide if it is his fault. |
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
How bad must Jason Campbell be in the meetings and on the practice field and how damaging is this for his confidence that he can't get in the game. I figure it's not too far away now for him to get in there because the booing is about to get really harsh, but I think 99.9% of anyone who covers football in any way is wondering why Gibbs is sticking with brunell. It makes no sense anymore. It's just so darn confusing? No way Brunell makes it past Philly twice, Dallas, Carolina, Atlanta, Tampa. There is no way.
|
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
there is away....................its just how far your willing to go
Now listen closely alls we have to do is sneek up on Peyton Manning when hes sleeping and using dark magic, make him look like Mark Brunnel and Mark Brunnel look like Peyton Manning |
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
Ugh, I guess it will get even worse before Joe considers trying to make it better.
|
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
Mark didn't play a bad game in my opinion. But as always, benching the quarterback helps the defense play better. Yeah...that makes sense.
|

That has to be the most ridiculous and idiotic statement ever. We want Brunell benched because he is not the future, and because it seems he cannot throw more than 5 yards. If we let Jason Campbell play the last nine games, he has great chance of improving, especially with the challenging teams coming up. The defense is less complicated to fix (just change up the DB's in the Offseason). Lets face it, this season is in the toilet, no miracle runs to the playoffs this year. Might as well invest the remaining nine games in the future, which is clearly Jason Campbell. |

Now that's the most ridiculous and idiotic statement I have ever heard. Apparently you must only tune into the game when the team is on offense. My 7 year old niece and tackle alot better than what I've been seeing. |
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
Relax SkinsGuy, and atomicnixon, there really isnt a need for you to say idiotic and all that.

But for the record I agree with you about the D, and how that is a greater issue. I still want Campbell in, but if I had a choice, do something about the D. |

That's my point too....I'm looking forward to seeing what Campbell can do...but even if Campbell comes in and plays like Superman, it isn't going to fix our defense's problems, and I don't believe our defense's problems should be down played any. |
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
Like I have been saying in other threads, I dont think giving up alot of yards a bad thing, but we just gotta get those turnovers and we are money.
|
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
Let me apologize to skinsguy, I am just frustrated at the whole situation and took it out on skinsguy. It just baffels me how you go 10-6 and then you cannot win more than 2 games the next year.

No problem...apology accepted. Hey, I'm just as frustrated. I really felt the changes we made during the off-season were ones that could only improve us...and I think that is so on offense, but apparently no so much on our defense. |

I feel your pain homie, it really sucks :( |
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
I don't know how many members we have here, but I'd be willing to bet if any of us had ten minutes, and two questions for Gibbs and Saunders, I know what they would be. Why do you continue to start Brunell when you can clearly see we're not going to win anything with him? Why wont you call plays for the ball to go downfield as opposed to 5 or 6 yd. passes regardless of down and distance? No diplomatic answers, just straight talk, Why? Why? Why?
|
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
I too am ready for campbell to come in, but not only for the future of the team, but I think he can give us a better chance to win now. Brunell for whatever reason will not throw down-field and doesn't spread the ball around well. Because of this every team we play is going to play up tight and our run game will and has already suffered. Teams will have to respect Campbell's arm and that will open up the run.
As for the idea that we shouldn't bench Brunell because the defense is the biggest problem, that may be true, but improving point production can only help get us closer to wins. Let's put it this way keeping Brunell in won't help the defense get a wink better. I don't have an answer for that. |

Let's not kid ourselves, Campbell has had very little (preseason only) playing time, and if anything, I'd expect our point production to take a drop for awhile until Campbell settles down. |
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
campbell throws great deep balls and average short/intermediate ones... might as well go back to the playbook from 91 and see what happens.

The problem is why do we have defensive problems because it ain't Williams fault, the guy is a proven genious as a D-coordinator, could it be offseason moves by other people in the organazation who wanted AA instead of Clark as B Mitch stated, or perhaps instead of continually throwing away draft picks try drafting depth not to mention maybe some starters, we also have plenty of injuries, imagine if the offense just 1 time stepped up and picked up and carried the defense for a change, like the defense has done for the last 2 years for our offense. How about since we know our defense is struggling our offense controls the ball and keeps them off the field, as far as I can tell theres no injuries on offense and superstars at every position, yea our defense has it's problems right now but they will improve, can we say the same for our offense? I think not! if any facet of our team has earned respect and should be cut some slack it's our defense. But the fact is they look far worse because our offense is as pathetic as it gets so if thier not shuting teams out they have failed. |

There are lots of variations of this argument floating around. I guess the standard for benching a qb is that he has to be the worst component on the team. If you can point out another area that is worse than him, defense, punting, whatever, somehow you jump to the conclusion that he should still play. Look, if we could bench some of those guys on defense we would, but we don't have any depth there, that's the problem. With the qb situation we at least can try a new course. How many times has a young qb come in and rallied a talented team that was floundering. When Brady got the call in 02 the Patriots were 0-2, having been blown out their first two games by considerable margins. They ended up winning the superbowl. Big Ben took a 1-1 Steelers team to 15 straight wins. Even if that doesn't happen with Campbell, we can't possibly be any worse... |

Gibbs just can't admit his rolex is fake. |

Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
you can't totally discount the offense last year. defense won the eagles game and the TB playoff game, but the stomping on the giants and dallas (very nice memories) was the peak of our offense.

It was a well documented fact that Williams wanted Arch, and in addition that Williams has a huge say in the defensive personnel. You can't pin that particular one on Gibbs. The problem with Arch is he's not skilled to sit back in cover 2 and I don't believe that was the original plan for him. The awful corner play has resulted in our switch to the cover 2 much of the time. I still believe Arch can turn it around. |

Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
I love how all of a sudden Archuleta isn't Williams' doing. Not sure where this came from but anyway.
Williams has said that he had his eye on Arch for a few years now. Gibbs trusts Williams when it comes to him selecting his own defensive personnel. I still think that Arch can work out for us once he settles into the system and we get healthier as a secondary. |
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
but gibbs has final say on everything :P.
But unless Gibbs has some enormous reason tho say no, he's going to go with Williams' calls. Plus, how could he say no after dropping a bunch of money on the offense? |
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
I've seen enough of Brunell to notice that the only time he is effective is when the other team has us blown out and resorts to prevent defenses. I think Sunday Sonny even referred to Brunell 'padding his stats'. Otherwise, when we're in the game he's simply not getting the job done. I certainly wouldn't be adverse to seeing Campbell under center, especially since we've got 2 wks to get him ready.
While changing QB's will not improve our defense, a better QB hopefully would translate into more points and greater time of possession. I would think that keeping our defense off the field more could only be a good thing and Williams is more agressive with a big lead compared to when the score is close, or as the case has been most of this season, when we're behind. |

The case for benching Brunell in my opinion is that it could psychologically boost the team. Players are more likely to play inspired for a new QB than they are for a new right DE. I don't think all the blame can be heaped upon Brunell but I'm sure he has known since he put on shoulder pads in pop warner and took the field as quarterback that there has to be someone on the team that falls on the grenade and that's often the QB. |
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
No, it's not all on Brunell, but a share of the blame certainly is. Our defense played pretty damn good in the first half of Indy and we only put up two TDs, one we had to get off a punt return. Our offense isn't cutting it either.
Also, the more our offense 3 and outs, the harder it gets on an already beat up defense. If they can't get off the field for more than 3 plays at a time, it gets awfully hard to keep it up. |
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
What I wished Gibbs has said was something like this: "Mark's numbers looked OK, but under him, the offense scored only one TD while the game was in the balance. I'm sticking with him, but I expect more from him."
Instead, we got the same old blind-faith statements. |
Re: Gibbs Press Conference:
What good comes from calling out players in public?
Parcells does it, how much has it help them? What Gibbs says behind closed doors is all that matters. I could care less what he says to the media. He could do a puppet show for all I care. I don't understand why some people are so hung up on what he says. He's never said anything, and he never will. |
