Who will have the break out season?
 

The question has to be asked who will have the monster season this year? If one of the moderators can make a poll on this for me that would be great. Some say Jacobs, Gardner, or Samuels. State your opinion for a offensive MVP and also an MVP on defense. It's gonna be awesome to see what everyone thinks.

For me, I think on offense it will be Portis, however not just as a rusher but as a tripple threat. He will become the Priest Holmes, Marshall Faulk type of back here if he can stay healthy. A triple threat is a runner, reciever, and blocker. Although this is a Gibbs system, do not neglect the aquisition of Ernie Zampese as an offensive consultant. Most with in the NFL contribute his knowledge to great NFL offenses such as the old "greatest show on turf" in st. louis. This will be an even better offense than people remember with Gibbs by alone.

On defense it will be either Smoot or Taylor... IF the Redskins can cause pressure like a Williams defense usually does look for Smoot to get alot of picks.
The reason I say Taylor because he will have picks as well as sacks hopefully. But Taylor may not get as many picks because his duty will be to cover the big body star recievers ( KJ in Dallas, TO in Philly, Shockey in NY) his big body will match well against these players because he has the size and the speed. If will be a great season in the NFC east, a superbowl contendor is coming from this division no question. :thumb:

In no specific order:

QB Brunell - As much as I like Ramsey, I think Brunell's going to have an awesome year. He's never had so many weapons at his disposal with this much protection. He's mobile, he's got two great tackles protecting the flanks, two strong guards protecting the interior, Gardner, Coles, Portis Jacobs, Thrash, and McCants to throw to, one of the league's best backs coming out of the backfield, and an All-Star coaching staff. He's named an alternate to the Pro Bowl.

OLB Marcus Washington - Benefitting from LaVar, who the backs are watching in pass protection, Washington gets 6 sacks and a boatload of tackles.


Who will be a disappointment?

Griffin was surrounding by a good supporting cast in NY (See, Michael Strahan). Here in D.C. he is the "star" of the bunch and will draw much more attention. Though he might be a decent pick-up, don't expect Cornelius (who had 1 sack last season) to turn our defensive line woes around.

Breakout player? I believe it will be Jacobs or McCants. I think Brunell will have a big year, but have a tough time calling it "breakout" - maybe comeback.

On defense, it could be either outside linebacker or Taylor.

LaVar Arrington is going to have a break out year, in my opinion. He has had some very strong years in his carreer, but this is the year that he is going to play at the dominating linebacker form, that he was drafted to be. I think with the coaching of Greg Williams, and the added support our defense should get with our offense, LaVar should have added confidence, along with a more efficent skeme, so he will have a breakout year. He should have a year similar to his year with Marvin Lewis, except that I think that he will have a better relationship with Williams, and will listen to him, helping his play on the feild as well.

I think Portis will have a breakout year. He's capable of breaking some franchise records i.e rushing yards, and rushing td's. On the other hand I really hope Brunell will have a great season and hopefully he can lead us back into the playoffs.

On defense you have to consider Lavar or Smoot. Smoot has lead the team in int's since he's gotten here, and now he has a chance to shine. He'll have more opportunities this year simply because he's very underrated and Champ is gone. Smoot has been one of the hardest workers in off season, and he's been working on his "techniques" which will pay off this season. As long as we can put pressure on the QB, we should be fine on D. We have a pretty decent secondary with the addition of S.Taylor. Our defense will be a sleeper this year.

Offense: Trash
Defense: Washington

The Trash prediction comes from a couple things. First and most important is Coles' foot injury. This is coming off like a nagging injury at best and possibly a season ending one if the Skins are unlucky. This will shake up the receiving core but I don't think it hurts us terribly. We have bunch of talented wideouts and with his experience and his work ethic Trash stands to be the biggest benefactor of more playing time (Gibbs loves the hard workers). I see Trash going off for 80-85 catches and a good 7-8 TDs.

Washignton is based on his talent level. He is primed for a breakout year now that he has two quality LBs playing next to him. He will end up being the biggest pickup of the offseason.

How about I call him Thrash and not Trash. :)

Offensive MVP- Lavernaues Coles- Was a beast last year, and he did play with the injury last season, he will recover and be close to a 1500 yard reciever

Defensive MVP- LaVar Arrington- Now that hes weakside, hes gonna put 10+sacks up, and with an organized defense, unlike last year, he will be unstoppable

Comeback Player- Chris Samuels- With solid blocking schemes again, and probably not having to block the blindside, he will be his monsterous self again, certainly a pro bowl trip in my mind. Rod Gardner is not far behind on the comeback list.

Breakthrough Player- Taylor Jacobs- He will win the # 3 job at some point this season, with his better speed than McCants, and more solid rout running. He is a smart player, who has had a season to watch and learn the neuances of the game, expect 500-600 yards recieving.

Heres how i project passing stats
Brunnel/Ramsey- 3500-3800- yes i believe they will put up a huge amount of yards, this offense is great

Coles- 1200-1500
Gardner- 800-1100
Jacobs- 500-600
McCants- 300-400
Cooley- 400-500
Thrash- 200-400 (i really dont see him gettin much playing time, barring an injury)

Ade, Smoot, and Springs in the backfield, they'll be known as the A-S-S Squad... Wait a minute, they could also suck A-S-S. That's no good.

My vote is for Agunleye. After the Dolphins trade him to the Redskins for 2nd round and 4th round picks next year, he will dominate and provide a pass rush. 13 sacks.

Ok, ok. Guess you're a "glass is half empty" kinda guy.

On offense, Gardner is going to finally live up to a 1st round pick status. With Coles iffy toe, Portis drawing extra coverage and this being a contract year, he'll finally get some big numbers.

On defense, Taylor would be too easy, so I am going with Wynn. Moreso because he HAS TO play well. He's been a moderate disappointment - so even a 8 sack year would be a breakout.

I am going out on a limb with my picks, so don't take my predictions too seriously.
I am going with two players that are not the obvious huge talent (like Portis or Coles), but rather the surprise.

On offense - Mike Sellers
I think defenses are going to forget about him because of all our other big weapons on offense...Coles, Portis, Brunell. So he will be left uncovered on some key pass plays, like key third downs or goaline plays. Plus he has great hands and a knock out blocker. Cooley will likely get some reps because he is a high draft pick. But I don't think he will outplay Sellers.

On Defense - Ohalete :>
After beating out Bowens for the SS position in about the 3rd or 4th week of the regular season....the opposing offenses will try to exploit him as the weak link on our defense. So he will have alot of opportunuties for pick offs and he will have a ton of tackles. But he will capitalize on this great chance and surprise the entire league.

i wouldnt say that, i just think im more of a realistic guy. it would be a great story if he were to become 3rd corner, but i dont see how that will happen. if u can play out a realistic scenario then id be more than happy to consider

Gardner becomes the Art Monk receiver- tons of catches to move the chains as he finally finds a coach who uses his skills correctly. He's got size and can move.

Arrington - if a Pro Bowler can have a breakout season. I look for him to be a terror, wait until they unload those 46 packages. He's Wilbur Marshall all over again, only faster if that's possible.

Special teams - The entire unit will improve. This was too easy as they can't get much worse.

The entire O-line will have a breakout season. After last year's weak performance, the line will blossom under Bugel's guidance. We will see lots of rushing yards, few sacks, and a dominating line late in the game that wears down opposing D-lines. We could send 2-3 O-linemen to the probowl. And as the o-line goes, so goes the team. Gibbs and Bugel are the kings of serious O-line play. Get ready for the dirtbags!

Well I've been saying it for months and I think many others here concur, Marcus Washington is on the brink of stardom. I can't wait to see him lined up opposite LaVar. That should be exciting. Offensively, I'm torn between Betts and Morton but I'm going to go with Morton. I think he could be a modern day Joe Washington.

Very interesting projection, Smootsmack!! I have been expecting to see Morton have a big year as a return man, with the new ST coaching. But I had not really thought about him doing anything at the RB position. I just imagined Portis getting almost all of the work there. But Gibbs really does like situational RB's, and they have had a major impact on his past Redskin teams.

i dont think that Portis should be on the list. He has already broken out, 1500 yards 2 years in a row...1800 wouldnt be a breakout year, it would he awesome, but hes broken out already

I voted for Jacobs. I agree with BigC, I have a hard time saying Portis simply because he's already "broken out" with back to back 1500 yard seasons and 29 rushing TD's. I guess if he goes for 2k that would be breaking out.

I think Jacobs will step up as the #3 guy.

I'm actually backing Jacobs to be the #2 WR. I think it won't matter though as Gibbs will throw in enough 3WR plays that we wnd up with the second coming of the Posse with Gardner playing the Monk role. IF Coles, Jacobs, Gardner and Cooley can be the new Clark, Sanders, Monk and Didier, then Portis does his thing (I can't compare him to any previous Skins back if he lives up to his potential), I don't think it matters who starts at QB.

On D I expect Smoot, Arrington and Washington to step up. If Taylor can live up to his college form, then we can scare ANY offense. Of course that would rely on the DL being able to stuff the run and tie up pass blockers for the LB's/Taylor to run free at the QB...

I think that Rod Gardner will have a awesome year. With Coles at #1 Gardner at #2 Thrash #3 Jacobs #4. Sounds like a pretty high powered offense. Let's just hope that we have something that we haven't had in years, CHEMISTRY! :biggthump

2- Gardner
3- Jacobs
4- McCants

I wouldn't sleep on McCants. Everyone is talking bout Jacobs and Thrash but all McCants did last year was grab TD's and make big plays for us. Also I think Gardner is going to have 1000 yard season. With all of our options on offense I think he will have a great year. I think Jacobs is going to have a solid year but not better than McCants last year, and Thrash will be a good special teams guy and maybe make a play ever once in a while but I don't think he is going to stand out .

I think it is a real stretch to believe that we will have 4 WR's with a big (or solid) season with around 8 TD's. For most teams, 2 could have that potential. In a Gibbs system, possibly 3 WR's, if our passing game does rise close to the level it had in his first term here. I believe Gardner will be ONE of the odd men out, and that Thrash is in the mix as much as McCants and Jacobs. But having all this "potential" talent competing is a great situation to be in. Ain't it fun imagining...
