Is it just me or are we paying too much for Chad Morton and Jermain Haley?

Just wondering...

Cap Notes

Some notes on the cap stuff:

- The data comes from various sources and is unofficial.
- You can disregard the yellow highlights, I'll get rid of them in the next update.
- Some info may be wrong/missing. If you notice any discrepencies let me know and I'll make the approriate updates.
- Although it looks ok now I'll try to keep the sheets "aesthetically pleasing".
- I'll keep these updated as often as I can.
Is it just me or are we paying too much for Chad Morton and Jermain Haley?

Morton - maybe, but that what it took to get him as a restricted free agent. Since we hadn't any legitimate threat to return before him, it was probably worth it.

Haley - I'm pretty sure that's league minimum for his time served. That still may be too much for him...

Big C 06-14-2004 04:38 PM

renaldo wynn needs to restructure badly. hes getting paid like an elite DE, when hes marginal at best.

SKINSnCANES 06-14-2004 04:40 PM

thanks for all the info.

Yea Wynn has always been who ive thought was getting paid to much.

Big C 06-14-2004 04:41 PM

jermaine haley's salary isnt outrageous by any means, this year at least

JWsleep 06-14-2004 05:25 PM

Awesome work, Canuck!!! You are another of the reasons that this is the #1 skins site. :biggthump

Question: if Smoot has a good year, are we in a position to re-sign him or not?

Big C 06-14-2004 05:50 PM

we better put him in a position to sign him
it seems to me that he likes it here in Washington, i dont see why hed want to leave
we should sign him as soon as possible

skins009 06-14-2004 07:09 PM

102 mill in three years, thats gonna be a problem.

Redskins_P 06-14-2004 08:02 PM
jermaine haley's salary isnt outrageous by any means, this year at least
It might not be outrageous, but we are overpaying him. I also think if Wynn doesn't have at least a decent year, he should either restructure or just release him.

Big C 06-14-2004 08:03 PM

i am in total agreement Redskins P, i dont really know that ur name means though
i am in total agreement Redskins P, i dont really know that ur name means though
By the way this is PeteyPablo. I changed my user name. P stands for my first initial (Pablo).

Big C 06-14-2004 08:14 PM

Oh, i remember peety pablo, thas cool.

I did not realize the great deal we have with Jansen. He is equal in skill at least to Samuels, and is coming at half the price
Oh, i remember peety pablo, thas cool.

Let's not forget how consistent Jansen has been....unlike ummmm Samuels? Arguably the most underrated tackle in the NFL, and we're lucky enough to have him at that price. I'm pretty sure he'll get recognized a little more this year since he is working Brunell's blind side. I think our whole O-Line will be one of the best.

Dirtbags baby....

Big C 06-14-2004 08:27 PM

definitely. One thing that surprised me is that in the sporting news, they are doing position by position grades for each team. Our interior line got a C+. i was very surprised because teams with mediocre lines got better grades than us. I thought we should be at least a B. Randy Thomas is a monster, and Dockery was very strong

Redskins_P 06-14-2004 08:33 PM

I think the whole reason for that was because of the way they performed last year. Dockery did fairly well, and he has the size and potential to become a premier lineman. With Buges back and with an offense primarily based on the running game, the o-line should get the respect it deserves.

Big C 06-14-2004 09:19 PM

yeh im gettin tired of critics downplaying our talent

SmootSmack 06-15-2004 03:46 AM

This is great work Canuck! I must admit I never knew his name was Adebolah Jimoh.

Canuck, would you like to explain what are release fees and how they affect the cap?

Big C 06-15-2004 11:32 AM

yea that would be cool, thx

memphisskin 06-15-2004 02:00 PM

I think the scariest part of that $102 mil is that it only includes the salaries for 35 players. Looks like we'll have to draft really well in the next couple of years to fill some gaps as we will have some awfully tough personnel decisions to make in a few years.

Big C 06-15-2004 02:08 PM

we'll be dumping some large salaries im sure. Brunell wont be around too long, and Samuels will eventually have to re-structure or be out

CrazyCanuck 06-15-2004 06:00 PM
Canuck, would you like to explain what are release fees and how they affect the cap?
The release fee is basically the remaining signing bonus (ie the cap hit) we would face if the player was released at that time.

I find it very useful to see what the contract really means and how long we can expect a guy to be on board (ie Brunell). It's the easiest way to see the ramifications of any long-term deal.

For instance if Samuels didn't have all this remaining signing bonus (ie such a high release fee), there's no way (IMO) we'd be keeping him on board at a cap hit of $8.75M. But since his release fee is so high this year, the Skins really have no choice but to keep him (which is also why he has not restructured, IMO).
Question: if Smoot has a good year, are we in a position to re-sign him or not?
I sure hope so. We also have to get PR signed ASAP.

I haven't really crunched the numbers for 2005 and beyond, but I'm quite sure Samuels, Wynn, and Gardner will all be gone (or restructure) next year. That will free up some cash.

...and by the way...

Love the new title and especially the new picture!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've gone from a blue-helmeted freak to The King!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Matty!!!!!!!!!!!

RedskinRat 06-15-2004 06:21 PM

You deserve it after all the good work.

The blue rinse wasn't you.

AnonEmouse 06-15-2004 06:21 PM

I think we should look at resigning Hamdan and McCullough ASAP. They haven't proved themselves yet, but I suspect they have good potential, if not as starters, certainly as reliable backups. Sign them now to 4/5 year deals and we could get a couple of bargains.

Oh and I agree on Wynn.

SmootSmack 06-15-2004 06:27 PM

Good job explaining the release fee Canuck. Now onto a more important question "Save the Expos"??. You're knowledgable about the business of sports, so explain to me how you think the Expos can stay in Montreal and be competitive?

Are you a CFL fan, if so who's your team, the Alouettes? I'm an Argo fan myself, but my cousin is a die-hard Alouettes fan. We've got our CFL fantasy draft this weekend.

Big C 06-15-2004 06:36 PM

NFL is still better man

SmootSmack 06-15-2004 06:51 PM
NFL is still better man
Don't get me wrong. I love the CFL and even Arena Football, but to me nothing beats NFL Sunday. That said though, I enjoy playing in the CFL fantasy leagues because when I lose I can just tell everyone else in the league "well I don't get to really see any games and I'm not Canadian" but when I win I can tell everyone "Y'all suck! You lost to me and I'm not even Canadian"

Big C 06-15-2004 07:16 PM

NFL is still the best dude, sorry

SmootSmack 06-15-2004 08:34 PM
NFL is still the best dude, sorry
And I agreed with you. I think you're just trying to rack up posts. :joke:

Big C 06-15-2004 08:38 PM

nah, im just bored off my ass, kinda hungover, and givin u a hard time :)

SKINSnCANES 06-16-2004 12:00 AM

A year or so ago Smoot was clammering about how he wanted big money and to make all the money back that he thinks he would have had if he was picked in the first round. I think he has humbled some and with Gibbs here will want to stay a Redskin, expecially if he becomes a leader.

memphisskin 06-16-2004 10:40 AM

I'd like to see Smoot stick around as we will need some continuity in order to be successful. I also think Snyder will also have to pay Smoot at least as much as he paid Springs.

SmootSmack 06-16-2004 10:43 AM
I'd like to see Smoot stick around as we will need some continuity in order to be successful. I also think Snyder will also have to pay Smoot at least as much as he paid Springs.
Thanks. I'd like to stick around as well, and yeah I'll probably be looking for a similar contract to Springs....oh wait you mean Fred Smoot!

I think he stays. I'm going out on a limb now and saying Smoot is a Redskin to start the 2005 season.

Big C 06-16-2004 10:44 AM

We dont really have any word that he is not interested in staying, so it is safe to assume that right now he will be a Redskin

CrazyCanuck 06-16-2004 12:24 PM

1. The Expos - don't even get me started, I don't have time for a 5 page post. But I do believe baseball can survive and flourish in Montreal. We're no different than 10+ other cities with MLB teams. Selig is so anxious to expand to new "international" markets like Mexico and Puerto Rico, he should start with CANADA. But I'll save my thoughts for an Expos rant at a later date

2. The CFL - I used to watch it a lot as a kid back when Warren Moon was dominating with the Eskimos. Then in 1981 I became a Skins fan and never looked back. The CFL is ok but I can't really get into it. They do have a knack for producing star NFL QBs though - Moon, Flutie, THEISMANN.

Let me ask you this - there are CFL fantasy drafts??????? Wow.

Not sure I can help you out too much. Of course if Matty shows me the big $$$, I may be willing to start a "Canuck's Alouette Minicamp Report" like JoeCrisp. In fact I live about 5 minutes from the Alouettes' DOWNTOWN STADIUM (see #1).

I have no Idea.

My post went in without my input. Then, when I tried to edit, I was timed out.

Crazy Canuck, Wow, a Title! Cool!
Maybe I should be a Lurkologist, Lurking and linking from HailRedskins.com. The threads are not as smart over there, but veeerrry veeerrry close! Their board is congested with pictures.

Or maybe I should be a FFBOlogist!
Or maybe a Mock Draftnic!
Or maybe a Redskins Threadretriever!
Or maybe a Burgandy & Gold News Snoop!
Or maybe simply Backrow!
