Couch to the Packers
 

So Tim Couch has finally signed with the Packers and it's got me wondering, which is the more daunting task?

1. Being the starting QB on an expansion team?

or

2. Succeeding Brett Favre in Green Bay?

#2 by far, atleast when he was the starting QB on the expansion team there really was no incumbant to be compared to.

If he does take over when Favre retires all you will hear are the comparisons of how Favre was better.

I agree wholeheartedly with Redskins8588 - being a quarterback on an expansion team is basically having a license to suck for a few years.

On the other hand, following in the shadow of a great quarterback means you don't have a very large window of opportunity before people start calling for your head.

Following Favre in Green Bay is no small task, but it can be done. I remember a guy named Young doing a pretty good job following a guy named Montana in San Fran.

Difficult, but not impossible.

Young did a great job in SF but he never quite got out of Montana's shadow.

The Browns are dumb to have given up on a solid but unspectacular QB here. I think he could still be a Pro Bowler someday. Garcia is over the hill, and they arent going to win anyways

I think he just sort of wore out his welcome.

He was the #1 pick in the draft and although I agree that he was solid; he was certainly not a franchise quarterback.

His recent battles for the starting role with a no-name (Kelly Holcomb) only served to highlight the fact that if he was going to make his mark on the NFL, it would probably be with another team.

Sometimes, a change is necessary regardless of the talent of the player.

this is true, but they surrounded him with no running game at all, and when they brought in a back, William Green, he got suspended. He had little, he should have hit up SF for a starting job there

Succeeding Brett Favre? Couch hasn't succeeded in his NFL career. To expect success from him now is illogical. Couch will be ridding the couch for a very log time.

Didnt they pick Crouch pack up after his what, second retirement? lol, that could be teh anwser in Green Bay. Either way, look for Green bay to draft a QB next year.

Couch has been mediocre. around 60% competion, 75 QB rating. thats not bad, not good. He can be a good QB still

I believe that Couch is beginning his new career as a perinnial back up. Just think how long his career could be. He could back up Favre for a year or two, and everybody knows he doesn't get hurt to often. Then he could move on to the next episode. It could go on for years... or not.

I think the Browns letting Couch go was more a monetary issue than anything else. Holcomb is considerarbly cheaper.

Riggo, what are u tryin to say.

If there was a monetary issue, Garcia wouldnt have been signed to such a big contract. Keep the QB situation as it was

I mean they would have held on to Couch, but probably as a backup. But with his previous contract that was impossible.

Starting on an expansion team, he was pretty much on his own. He was still a college QB on a pro team. Maybe with a year or two to learn from a master like Favre he'll learn what it takes to be a Pro QB!!!

i hope he does. He has a lot of potential i think

Couch shows flashes of potential but he's just too inconsistent. Maybe a new start is what he needs, I'm not very high on him though.

You never know with QB that are drafted high and therefore have to go to horrible teams. Mabye Couch will succeed with more talent around him. The system you get drafted in has such a huge impact on how your career will unfold.

Remember, the past few years Cleveland has been working it's way back from being an expansion team. Couch has had the Expansion experience, now he gets to be a back-up to a Title-town legend! Tough career!

Just think how you would do in your career if you had to follow up a legend!

I know those who follow me here at work, will have a very hard time!

Look at Couch as another Gus! He will continue to kick around for a while!
If a Marquis Tuisisopo (sp?) can stick for a long time as a back-up, then Couch can too!

Their mistake was choosing Holcome over Couch. If Couch had started, then he would still be on the team in my opinion, and have lead them to a better record. When he subbed in for Holcome during the injury, he played well

Is there anyone in here who thinks Holcome isn't better than Couch?

Holcombe had a couple of advantages over Couch. One was that teammates rallied around him more so than Couch. Couch was more of the loner type while Holcombe was the unsung backup QB/hero. Another is that Holcombe used to be the backup QB in Indianapolis, which on the surface isn't a big deal but Holcombe's QB coach in Indy was Bruce Arians who then went on to become Cleveland's Offensive Coordinator. Of course now the Browns OC is Terry Robiskie

I think Couch is better
