Favorite Teams for Other Sports?

Who are your favorite teams for other sports and leagues? I figure it's another good time killer as we wait for training camp...

NCAA Hoops: UConn, Baby! I’m a die hard fan.. almost as much as I am for the Skins. My family is originally from Connecticut and lots of them are/were Uconn grads and/or professors. Two championships in the last five years is great too! Okafor’s back is fine, BTW. ;)

NCAA Football: Penn State. Three Words: Joe Pa. Class.

MLB: N.Y. Mets. Their AAA team is in the same city I grew up in, Norfolk, VA, so I’ve been rooting for the Mets since I was a kid. The games are cheap and fun. Hot as hell, but fun. I always have a blast there. OK, OK, I get pretty drunk and heckle players. The ballpark is beautiful… downtown on the waterfront. It was designed by the same people that designed Camden Yards. Being a Mets fan also makes watching the Yankees painful. Even worse, we suck. :(

NHL: NY Rangers. I didn’t really know about hockey until the Miracle on Ice, and when that ended, Jim Patrick and Herb Brooks went to the Rangers, so there I went too. Pissed my dad off… he’s a Boston sports fan. That said though, I don’t really follow hockey anymore. I just don’t like the NHL game as much as the internation/olympics game. Last I checked, we sucked this year too. :(

NBA: None. As a kid, I liked the Unseld and the Bullets and then Showtime in LA. By the time Jordan was winning everything in Chicago, I’d lost interest in any one team. Original Nintendo basketball probably had a lot to do with that! It’s probably the only sport I follow the players rather than the teams themselves. So as a UConn fan, the Pistons with Rip are my new de facto favorite team. Until next year.

SmootSmack 06-18-2004 06:14 PM

College Hoops: American U. (hey it's my alma mater), Hoyas (mom and bro are Hoyas)

College Football: Iowa (my dad's a hawkeye)

MLB: Orioles (basically the most local team, though I guess I sort of root for the Expos in case they move to DC and because they play a few games in my motherland Puerto Rico)

NHL: None really, I used to like the Islanders as a kid so I guess them by default but I like to see the Blues, Caps, and Predators do well also. I just like watching good hockey

NBA: Wizards. And I've been on the Grizzlies bandwagon since they entered the league. Finally my friends aren't laughing at me

RedskinRat 06-18-2004 07:10 PM

NHL Detroit Red Wings

British Soccer: West Ham United and England

Can't watch any other sports or I'll explode.

EEich 06-18-2004 07:19 PM

Grew up in NE Pennsylvania.
Moved to Connecticut after school.

Hoops: UCONN (live five minutes from Gampel), 76ers
Football: Redskins, Penn State (had First Holy Comunion with Joe Pa's kids)
UCONN (watch out Big East)
Baseball: Phillies (I like to antagonize my Yankee and Red Sox loving friends)
Hockey: Whalers

skinznut 06-18-2004 07:21 PM

I guess this is a good place for my first post.

NCAA - Syracuse - I'm only 45 minutes away and they have some great teams.

MLB - Yankees - Grew up watching them because of my dad being a huge fan.

Not really big on any other sports. I like to watch, but I'm not crazy about any individual teams.

Skinznut good to hear from you! Jeez, you like the Orange and the Yankees, as a Hoyas and Orioles fan I guess I'm just glad we share a love for the Redskins

NY_Skinsfan 06-18-2004 09:46 PM

Basketball - None, really boring to me...to many points scored.

MLB - Yankees, what can I say, I live in NY

NHL - Unfortunately, I grew up a Ranger fan...but, I will stick with them even if it takes another 54 years.

Soccer -U.S. National Team, I really believe we can, at least, repeat what we did in '02 in Germany in '06...We now can compete with the rest of the world on a regular basis.

I am also a crappy golfer who likes to follow golf....presently rooting for Phil Mickelson at the U.S. Open to win his second major in two attempts... But I still like to see Tiger dominate...would like to see the 18 majors record broken in my lifetime and a natural grand slam....no "Tiger Slam."

Gmanc711 06-18-2004 11:37 PM

NFL - Redskins of course.
Basketball: Knicks and I do like the Pistons, but I Havent really followed them besides the playoffs, so I say I'm not a fan cause I hate bandwagoners.
MLB : STL CARDINALS, Baby. They are freaking tearin it up right now, Rolen and Puljos for dual MVP's! ( The Cardinals are the only non football team that I really consider myself a true fan of )
NCAA: Basketball - Syracuse, North Carolina
Football - Oregon , Notre Dame, Syracuse

skinsfanthru&thru 06-19-2004 12:39 AM

NFL: Skins and chargers
NBA: Lakers and Celtics
NCAA Hoops: UVA and Kentucky
NCAA Football:VA Tech, UVA, and Penn State
MLB: the Padres and the Mets

MTK 06-19-2004 01:14 AM

MLB: grew up a die hard Mets fan but I have to admit I'm not a big fan of MLB anymore but I do still follow the Mets in the paper and I'll watch a few innings here and there

NCAA hoops: Syracuse all the way, probably my 2nd favorite sports team behind the Skins

NCAA football: Notre Dame but I'm not a HUGE fan, if they're on I'll watch and that's about it

NBA: grew up a Celtics fan, don't really have a true team anymore though, I was a fan of the Jordan lead Bulls dynasty in the 90's

NFL: Other than the Skins of course I can watch any game, any time and love every minute of it. There's nothing like the NFL.

NHL: Rangers if I had to pick a team, though I'm not a big fan. Hockey is great live though, on TV it's so-so.

cpayne5 06-19-2004 09:41 PM

NCAAB - Duke: love Coach K's professionalism
NCAAF - VA Tech
MLB - Orioles; man I wish Angelos would sell the team
NBA - the perenially pitiful Wizards

Cush 06-19-2004 09:59 PM

NHL: Washington Capitals

NBA: Wizards (hard to follow this disaster, Abe really needs to sell the team. Wes Unseld was a terrible GM, stuck around way too long)

MLB: Baltimore (not a big baseball fan)

College: UVA (dad went there, as did an uncle) and George Mason University.

SKINSnCANES 06-20-2004 01:25 AM

Canes of course, a distant second to the Skins.
The O's for baseball, Capitals for hockey, and Wizards I guess for bball. I support the local teams but also like the Raiders, and Magic.

I'm with you on this, NY_Skinsfan. On a good day, we can play with the big boys. Bruce Arena is a great coach, and Claudio Reyna is a world class midfielder, not to mention our excellent keepers. USA! USA!

For the rest, I'm a big Terps fan in NCAA hoops; I got into the Knicks for a while when Ewing was playing, but that's faded; I watch the yanks on occasion; I wish the caps were good; and I enjoy watching most sports on TV.

But in the end, it's only really the skins that get me going and make me lose sleep.

Gmanc711 06-21-2004 01:43 AM

I'm a big golf fan, and have been a Mickleson fan for years. I honestly felt real dissapointment when he lost the U.S. open today, which lead me to think... what would happen if the Skins' ever lost in a Championship game or Superbowl. I might cry more than the 99' divisional loss.

Guess you're too young to remember Super Bowl XVIII. That was painful. I think that if the Redskins had won that Super Bowl that team would have gone down as maybe one of the best in NFL history. Two losses by a combined 2 points. Over 500 points scored. Plus 43 turnover ratio.

That Guy 06-21-2004 06:54 AM

NBA: Wizards (though i like them better when they're winning), liked rooting for the pistons in the playoffs, but i don't follow them...
NCAA: don't watch a lot, like the terps and betting on sweet sixteen/playoff games...
NHL: stingy defensive play kills excitement... i watched the last set though, and that wasn't too bad (offensive teams, probably best hockey postseason i've seen (i'm not so old ;) ))
MLB: WAY too boring, don't know what else to say, i just can't watch it

SkinsRock 06-21-2004 04:59 PM

There are other sports???

NHL: Caps
MLB: Not a big fan, but I usually root for the O's and the Cardinals (lived in St. Louis for a while in the early-mid 80's....saw the Skins beat the football Cardinals there a couple times!) Will support the DC team if/when we get one.
NBA: Not really into it, but I'd root for the Wizards if they didn't suck.
NCAA: Not real big into it, but go Terps!

Yeah I wasent even around for that, I was born in 85'. I dont remember the 87' win, but I do still recall vaguley the 92 Super Bowl win. I still have some Newspaper clippings from around here ( Buffalo Area ) where they did a daily matchup of positions of the two teams.

sweet, another Padres fan :biggthump how do u like how the team is performing this year? I think they can stay in contention especially since they r playing extremely well on the road, but only so so at home. I'm glad to finally see Nevin heating up and greene has played pretty well, but the guy who gets no love from the media is Loretta. He has done a hell of a job since coming to the team last year. And how about Peavy? its good to see him pitching again. It does kinda suck to see how well Perez is pitching in Pittsburgh but I think giles was well worth it don't u?

That Guy 07-03-2004 08:55 PM

NFL: redskins, lewis & lewis when they're making/breaking tackles, Vick and KC offense/dante hall
NBA: catch a few of the wizard games, watch the championships... limited interest, hate the soap opera that is the lakers, hopefully that's over now...
NHL: don't really follow it, sometimes look up caps scores...
MLB: can't stand it, its soo slow...
NASCAR: have a brother who won't shut up about it, dale fan i think, but he keeps track of everyone...

Big C 07-03-2004 09:03 PM

NBA: Wizards
Soccer Club: FC Barcelona
Soccer International Team: Spain
NHL: Sharks

Skins fan 44 07-05-2004 12:36 PM

Skinsfanthru&thru:
I like the Padres chances if they can stop the Giants. It is for sure they have to win there division with the Central being so strong. Hopefully the pitching stay good.

Redskins_P 07-05-2004 02:44 PM

NCAA - G-Town, UMd
College Football - VaTech
MLB - Yankees, Cubs
NBA - Wizards, Knicks
NFL - WASHINGTON REDSKINS

NM Redskin 07-07-2004 04:44 AM

NFL - Redskins of course, dad grew up in VA, so that how all the way in NM, in Dallas country, I became a Skins fan.

MLB - Yankees, actually saw a game at Yankee Stadium.

NCAA - NMSU, hey we do pretty good in men's and women's b ball, and our football team always sucks, but hey I love live games.

NHL - Avalanche, my AVs obsession rivals my Redskin obsession.

NBA - don't really care.

As far as soccer goes, gotta love the US team from 02, down here, when we beat Mexico, people down in Juarez were crying on the streets and there were some small roits, bout time we get some International respect!

Big C 07-07-2004 10:26 AM

haha yeah that was a good game, but then we didnt qualify for the olympics, even tho we field a regular team, and other countris field U-21 teams, so yeah...goin downhill a little.

JWsleep 07-07-2004 12:48 PM

Big C: We fielded our under 23 team (No Reyna, Nor McBride, No Fridel or Keller, etc.) in olympic qualifying. Still, it was us or Mexico, and the game was played in a very tough stadium in Mexico, with a very hostile crowd. They booed the national anthem and shouted "osama, osama" during the game. Mexico also fielded an under 23 squad, I think.

PS We beat Mexico a few months ago in Dallas as a warm up to World Cup qualifying. Both teams had pretty much their full sides, and we dominated play, winning 1-0. Should have been more. When Bruce Arena coaches and Reyna plays, we're still pretty good.

So I think we'll be pretty strong again in 2006, though 2002 may be tough to beat, especially the Mexico game.
