Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
Lemar Marshall is garbage. Looks like plug and play only works when you have Pierce.
Lemar Marshall is garbage. Looks like plug and play only works when you have Pierce.
I'm convinced they have him out of position and did last year. He needs to be outside.
Why has Marcus Washington escaped criticism thus far? |
I'm convinced they have him out of position and did last year. He needs to be outside.
Why has Marcus Washington escaped criticism thus far?
Why criticize Washington? He is our only LB who can play. Marshall is "just a guy". Holdman isn't even that. I dont grasp why Rokcy hasn't gotten a shot since I can't imagine him doing worse than Holdman. And I agree we need to upgrade a MLB howevere we can. CB is our main issue though. Rogers should be coming on better than he is. He is looking more and more like a nickleback every week. |
Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
You can't blame a single player. Our front 4 plays like shit which translates to the LBs playing like shit, which in turn results in the DB playing like shit. This team has packed it in.
|
Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
Well if there was a quick fix at middle linebacker right now in free agency i'd say get him and move Lemar back to weakside. But there's nobody that can come in and immediately start at middle linebacker. Next year Rocky should be starting so we're stuck until then.
|
Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
I go with Holdman, then Marshall. If a run went at Washington's side, it was stuffed for a short gain. When it went to Holdman's it was almost GUARANTEED to be a long gain.
We had this same problem last year until LaVar came back in. Holdman has regressed to last year's form. |
Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
anygood MLB that are free-agents?
|
Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
Rocky McIntosh must really suck if he hasen't cracked this starting line-up yet.
|
Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
Missed tackles all day long. No penetration for most of the day. Tampa basically imposed their will on us the whole game. Plus we don't have that marquee pass rusher that can draw double teams to help other guys get to the QB.
Our blitzing is awful. I don't know if it is bad timing on calling blitzes or what. To Tampa's credit, they did a great job of picking it up. Did anyone see when Carlos Rogers blitzed? It look like he took ten years to get to the QB. |

I think we need to start looking more critically at Griffin and Salave'a. I mean, I know that both have been battling injuries. But they're not getting any younger, and when they play it's pretty apparent that they're not anywhere close to 100% We made the move to Campbell. Maybe it's time to make the move to Golston/Montgomery/Boschetti |

Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
he is a rookie.
also rodgers looks as though he was not running hard on the play he got burn't
I know he's a rookie, but the guys in front of him, especially Holdman, are struggling. He's not even getting a wiff of the field in a G. Williams defense that he repeatedly states does not have starters but packages that features players. I didn't expect him to start at the begging of the season, but at this point he should have seen some playing time on the 30th ranked D. |
Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
Do people still think that drafting Ware or Merriman ahead of Rogers would have been a bad move. I will concede that I did used to have Mike Williams on this list and I was wrong, but I've been pining for a DE for years. This year they finally signed Carter...I'm not gonna bring that up too much, but c'mon Rogers hasn't been too good this season. He needs to get markedly better next season
|
Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
Marshall should not be in there at MLB. He is getting run over, he's not reading runs well, and he can't blitz. Certiainly it's time for Rocky. I just don't understand this. Ok, old school coaches don't play rookies, yatta, yatta. But we are getting NOTHING from our LBs except the the occasional play with Washington, when the play goes his direction.
Marshall is just too small. And he doesn't have the skills to make up for it. Boy, do we EVER miss Pierce. |
Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.

Marshall is much better suited to weakside LB. Blame Gibbs for letting Pierce walk after a great season, then signing the likes of Archuleta and Carter this season. |
Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
Marshall has regressed big time this year. Seems like he has not been around the ball much at all. Lately I have heard commentators remark that the defense has not been running to the ball well. Seems like that was a previous trademark of this defense.

Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
our defense is dead last i bet.
it's ok #1overall pick here we come! |
Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
Like others I think Marshall is a good lb but is out of position for someone of his size. McIntosh is playing great on ST while Holdman has become an absolute shell of himself so I don't know why we haven't seen him in more. As far as the AA situation, I think the saddest part about how quickly he's fallen from grace with the coaching staff is that when Vincent needed a rest, it wasn't AA taking his spot, but instead it was Vernon Fox most of the time. This defense is acting like the defense of 5-6 years ago and needs more pieces than it should after how successful it has been the last couple years.
|
Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
Our lineback core consists of Marcus Washington, "Worthless", and "Useless" (referring to Lamar Marshall and Warrick Holdman not necessarily in that order). Holdman is a reject from the Browns. Nuff said. Marshall was most effective as a situational linebacker for pass coverage. He doesn't seem to have the strength or skills to play run or blitz. This would also add support to why Williams is so hesitant to blitz this year.

That's what happens when instead of letting a defense gel and keeping its leaders, you perpetually try to get superstars for the team. Ryan Clark has freed up Troy Polamalu in Pittsburgh...I've been saying this all season...why did they let him walk. They could have signed him for 1/3 of what Archuleta (the current highest paid saftey in the NFL) and signed a kicker. I still like the Carter get, but I think they need someone else on the line who can play to play to free him up. He's not the dominant pass rusher the Skins (and I) hoped he would be. However, I don't think it's a total loss. Did they overpay? You're damn right they did, but who didn't they pay more than market value for? I think Vincent is a great ballplayer. However, does anyone think he plays just like Clark did? |
Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
Marshall was the worst player on the field today! I have no idea if it's his fault.

Agreed. The line was horrible and has been all year. Goldston was getting blown off the ball all day. I think the olny two players that I would keep on our front 7 is M. Washington and C. Griffin. Yes Marshall had a bad game but it starts w/ the line. Grad. doesn't even need to wash his jersey. Same old with A Carter. He played real bad today. |

Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
There's a pretty nice free agent class for LB's. Can anyone say LONDON FLETCHER..lol he's gonna be like 32 or something but he's never missed a game and is very solid. Personally i'd like to see us go after C. June.

I take that back, i meant briggs..he's big and plugs holes..i just hope the bears don't slap him with the ftag.

I liked him in San Fran. Not so much what he's done here. He doesn't look like the same player here. He looks like he's thinking about the game too much. Not just playing. I've been really disappointed. I still think if he were on the other side of a really good pass rusher he could make plays. I don't think he's made to be a #1 Defensive linemen. When he was in Frisco you had Bryant Young as the dominant guy and Carter flying under the radar and making plays. I think he could do that in Washington too. That's just my opinion, I could be totally wrong. As for blowing up the front 7, that's a horrible idea. While they may not be great, adding 5 new starters would kill that front (not that there is much to kill, but it would destroy whatever chemsity they have/are building). They would play about the same way next year that they are right now. They'd all have to get reacclumated to each other. It's just not feasible |

That's not true, look at the 2004 season...all those defensive pick ups resulted in the #3 defense in the NFL. And what would u suggest we do then?? It would make no sense to try and build on something that's just not there. We need to see some changes. |

What player on defense has improved this year? They've all regressed. |
Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
I would suggest starting Rocky, drafting/signing a real MLB, and then drafting a D Linemen or 2, but I would just rotate our D line the way the Broncos do. They don't have 1 dominant linemen, but they always have a fresh guy coming after you. I think adding guys would be a good idea, but I wouldn't cut 6 guys. That's a bad idea. On that note, I don't think they could afford to cut all those people.

But there is really no one that is any frickin good. With that being said in SF Carter was playing linebacker in a 3-4. According to him he was playing out of position. But he just can't hold up against the run as a 4-3 end. So basically he is of no use. TB's TE just wore him out all day long. |
Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
You might as well play all the youngsters on Defense and see if they play with a little more fire and hunger than our starting 'D'. Our defense goes further past middle linebacker. Our DL, LBs, secondary...everybody needs a big kick in the pants.

Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
Marcus Washington is a huge liability in coverage. This year, he's had some difficulty tackling (as the rest of the team). He's a good pass rusher, always has been, but whatever the reason, he isn't doing any pass rushing. If you are going to take a guy with glaring weaknesses in his game and not use him to his strengths, why even have him?

Lol. If we cut Washington the NFL should move the franchise. Do you honestly think for one second that cutting Washington makes sense on any level? |
Re: Add Middle Linebacker to the shopping list.
Lemar Marshall should move to WLB. Rocky can back him up until he is ready. Then all we need is a MLB to have a fairly good group.
Put Daniels back at Left DE and Wynn back at Right DE. Carter can be an overpaid third down specialist. We obviously need to draft a quality DE. We need to find a starting quality CB. Move Rogers to nickel corner. We need to find a complement to Sean Taylor. Maybe Prilou can be that guy next year. Vincent can be a good backup safety. What we need to make this a good enough defense are three or four players: 1. a starting MLB 2. a starting CB 3. draft a DE 4. a complementary safety for Sean Taylor Now, we had those pieces but we let them go: MLB Pierce, CB Smoot, safety Ryan Clark We could have kept all of these pieces, and could have used the draft pick that we spent on Rogers to draft the best DE available. Wow. That would have made a HUGE difference. If only we had a competent GM / Front Office then. |

GW prefers tackling cbs (that's why he let smoot go and why we probably didn't sign dyson), but come on. |
