Did Gibbs take over play calling in the second half?

..... or Don Breaux? It was clearly a Joe Gibbs offense in the second half. I'm wondering if Saunders in fact called the plays after the half? Oh, and anybody wanting Gibbs out.....too bad! He's staying until he rights the ship and we won today because we played old fashioned, Joe Gibbs football.....along with our defense returning to the form of 04-05!

I liked the fact that they threw on 3rd down there at the end. It was poorly executed but it sends a great message about their confidence in Campbell. It says "we intend to win".

I also liked Duckett running the stretch play. Beautiful.

Gibbs did i believe if you watched him on the sidelines when they would have the cameras on him. He was clearly involved. Run, run, run, big pass. Kudos to Campbell for coming back out and going down the field after the int. Defense finally showed up today. A little to late but it is glad to enjoy it. 8-8

I doubt he was calling the plays, but I bet he told Saunders what type of plays to call.

The 2nd half playcalling looked like it was called by Gibbs, but who knows.

I think Gibbs didn't call the plays, i just believe he told Saunders how he wanted it done and that's the way Saunders drew it up.

Re: Did Gibbs take over play calling in the second half?

Then if Gibbs told Saunders what type of offense scheme to call in the second half, then why have Saunders?

Well we are paying him all this money, we might as well use him.

Re: Did Gibbs take over play calling in the second half?

I was just watching the replay of Cooley's long TD. It looked like a re-enactment of 70 Chip once he makes the catch. If we could get a ground level photo it would be ever so cool.

Also, as he made his victory lap around the corner of the endzone it looked like some of the cheerleaders turned their backs on him. Those broads need to remember that it takes two to tango and let bygones be bygones.

More: WRC TV 4 here in Washington reported that on the long pass to Cooley, Campbell's headset malfunctioned and Campbell called that play himself. That's big nuts by him considering it was 3rd and 8 and an absolutely critical play in the game.

This is exactly what happened. On Triple X radio they had a correspondent ask that same question. Al called the plays all game, but they all speculate that Gibbs told Saunders what kinda plays he wanted this game.

I liked the aggressiveness of passing there but I really thought they should have ran and forced them into taking another TO.

Yeah, its a conundrum. Especially after the penalty set them back further. I think Gibbs was determined to not run it three times and kick. Partly so he doesn't have to answer that question if they lose and partly because of what I said before: It shows they have confidence in Jason. It was almost willful or obtuse that they called pass after the penalty. How many times have they converted from that distance? That's why I think it was affectation on Gibbs' part. He was making a statement. I don't think there is any way Campbell cuts loose with it unless a defender falls and he has someone wide, wide open. He did the smart thing throwing it to the ground.

Also it looked like they were setting up screen which ends up being like a run anyway, if it comes off.

I think they were setting up the screen as well. You can see the linemen pulling, but JC was under pressure, and it wasnt a great throw. Either way if we completed it everyone would say Saunders/Gibbs is a genius.

I mean look at the Thanksgiving game, when the Cowboys rolled Romo out and he threw it, when all they needed to do was run. If that was an incompletion everyone in Dallas would want Parcells head, but everyone thinks he is great.

Cooley was or is dating a Redskins Cheerleader and she got booted because they're not suppossed to do that. At the next home game the girls turned their backs when he was introduced. Cooley got hauled into Gibbs office over the whole thing. It was in the Post.

In looking at it again, one or two were facing the other way as he ran by. There may be something there, but it's mostly just me looking for an excuse to type "broad". It's one of my favorite expressions.

Re: Did Gibbs take over play calling in the second half?

I was probably just as elated as the rest of you all when I heard we hired Saunders. However, when I heard Brunell say that "at my age" bringing his 700 page play book "stinks!" I started to wonder about this genisis we are embarking on. Forget about the playoffs....Saunders has screwed us. I do not see any mastery that he was supposed to bring here. Gibbs play calling was just as remarkable last year(playoffs) as it was when he won 3 SB's and at San Diego State too. I said when I saw Saunders calls the plays from upstairs that this is caca. You can not get the feel of your players unless you are on the sideline with them. I do not know what to suggest other than Gibbs and Saunders compare their play books and shrink it down to realistic size. I'm sure that Gibbs did not override Saunders in the middle of the game. However if Saunders brings nothing more to the table than what we've seen, let Gibbs call the plays.

Re: Did Gibbs take over play calling in the second half?

Gibbs stopped calling plays for one reason. He knows that, physically, he can't do what it takes to run the offense effecively (at least for much longer). He did the best thing, long term, for teh team. Bring in a proven offensive coordinator with a similar pedigree to run the offense.

It sucks that we lost out this year, but if our defense was playing like it was last year, we would still be looking at getting into the playoffs about the time the offense is really coming together.

I don't remember exactly when, but Campbell said in his interview that he couldn't hear "Saunders play". Sounds like Saunders is calling a Gibbs style gameplan to me!

PhxRedSkin 11-27-2006 07:16 AM

Re: Did Gibbs take over play calling in the second half?

If you watch the post game, you'll see Gibbs explains that Campbell's headset went out in his helmet. Possibly....:) maybe Jason thinks Al's calls suck and he took it upon himself. We won. Yeah there were calls for and against, but the lame ass calls as expected went heavily against us. Hockely can eat caca. Whether JC's headset went out or not Saunders play calling has been garbage. If we wanted predictable and expectable play calling we should have stuck with Gibbs. Saunders was supposed to bring something NEW. Fire Saunders or give him a subordinate job. Gibbs should be calling the plays. Call the plays from the sideline and not in a booth.

Re: Did Gibbs take over play calling in the second half?

Remember how we all heard that Saunders never calls the same play within a four game span when we first signed him? So then why does it seem like we tend to run the same two or three plays on first down 80% of the time?
The same can be said the the Randle El reverse that we run at least once a game (it went for -5 yards yesterday).

Re: Did Gibbs take over play calling in the second half?

who knew we were good at running down the middle? oh yeah, everyone not named al saunders. tough line to run at, but they got it done, and the defense let them stay in their game plan. the whole thing reeked of joe gibbs, which is a good thing, since i thought he'd been too passive on way too many fronts. he knows offense, he knows coaching, and he needs to be involved instead of watching from the bleachers. today he was involved, and it showed.

Re: Did Gibbs take over play calling in the second half?

The plays are called in by one of the assistant coaches not Saunders. Jason herd about half of the play when his head set cut off. He just thought of the plays that started with the half he heard and plug in the rest for the situation and the D they where playing.

last year brunell had a play and could always audible to shotgun... brunell completed an awful lot of those 3rd and longs last year too, so it's not quite as bad as you think.
