"Oh Brother "!Gibbs Right Choice But Maybe Too Late ,thanks Old Man!

Joe Gibbs probably made his quarterback switch decision a few weeks too late to have an impact on this lost Washington season, but at least he did it.

What was always strange about the coach’s reluctance to switch to Jason Campbell was that the young quarterback was Joe’s pick in the draft two years ago. It was Gibbs’ decision to use two extra draft picks and his own first-round pick on Campbell.

Campbell was beaten down by the implications that he wasn’t ready to handle the complicated offense of Al Saunders. When a club starts saying that Campbell has had four different offensive coordinators in the last four seasons, well the tag is that he’s not smart enough to handle the playbook. And how backward is that thinking?

You mean you keep playing Mark Brunell because he knows a 500-page playbook better than Campbell? Now, that really is dumb. Isn’t it supposed to be about production, wins and losses and which player gives your team the best chance to win?

When I first met Campbell at the scouting combine, I told him how much Terry Bradshaw loved his arm. He was so thankful that someone recognized his ability. The only way Campbell and Redskins will ever know whether he can compete in the NFL is by playing.

Finally, Gibbs basically has gotten a free pass in Washington because of his past Hall of Fame accomplishments and those three Super Bowls. Everyone has been blamed but him

Yea um lets see did it ever occur to you that campbell didnt understand the playbook and therefor would not be able to understand the plays.

Also hes not the reason we beat Carolina no matter what we say, our defense showed up and Chris Cooley managed to make a great play. In my opinion Brunell could have done the same if not better, but hey thats him growing.

PS

football isn't exactly rocket science. pass routes are the same everywhere, and the holes for the running plays might have different numbers, but they are the same place in the line. if Campbell could be successful learning all those different offenses, then he must be a quick learner. Gibbs just prefers veterans

Hey soldier boy or girl, if your going to reference an article, give us link, don't make me hunt for it. It not only makes it easier for everyone to be informed on your topic, but it also gives your argument more credibility. Of couse I'm assuming you created this thread to argue your point and not just to be an ass.

hey redskin fan he is not our savior a savior isnt scared to play a new guy look at vince young for christ sake if he gave up 2 picks to get him he should have put him on the field bottom line he couldn't have done any worse than brunell! you guys are not holding him accountable I am. just like rocky MCintosh he needs to make williams play that guys he is the head coach he needs to grow some balls he chewed the team after all those losses he should have nipped it in the butt but he let precious game after game slip by stop living in the past it is 2006 gibbs is a good coach but nowadays his decisions making process is straight idiotic if you are the head coach be a head coach! he needs to grow some balls and make "SOUND AND TIMELY" DECISIONS!

His last game he produced a total of 118 passing yards and 60 came on one play, game before I think he threw for around 189 yards which are not states which says we waited too long. How can anyone say that not playing Rock is a mistake unless some people here have access to our pratice's and can see how he is performing. Saying that we should have but Campbell on the field right away for the picks we gave up is just crazy. YOU PUT THEM ON THE FIELD WHEN THEY ARE READY TO PLAY AND CAN HOPEFULY DO BETTER ThAN THE CURRENT QB.

I guess our injuries and piss poor defensive play has nothing to do with our struggles this season. It's all about the QB. Thanks for clearing that up.

Re: Oh Brother Gibbs Right Choice But Maybe Too Late ,thanks Old Man!

3rd ID Soldier. Your post is ridiculous. I think their are several obvious reasons as to why putting Campbell in the game instead of Brunell may have been a bad idea. Did it happen to be a good move? Yes, but that's because the rest of the team decided to show up. I agree with Redskin on the idea that Brunell could have won that game too. Let's think of some possible reasons as to why Gibbs was hesitant to put Campbell in. A) We could not get the running game going. Putting a young quarterback with no starts into a team with no running game may turn out to be a disaster. B)Our offensive line was letting too much pressure in. Do you remember what happened to Patrick Ramsey? His first season starting we had no rushing attack with Trung Candidate and he used to get the crap knocked out of him by opposing defenses. That absolutely destroyed his confidence, and there's no way we wanted that to happen to JC C) Historically first year quarterbacks have not done very well in the NFL, unless your name is Marino or Rothlesburger. D) Just because Campbell knew college offenses, does not mean he could necessarily catch onto an NFL offense, especially one as complicated as Al Saunder's. E) Our defense was not showing up until last game, which would cause Campbell to have to pass more because he's playing from behind all the time. Always playing from behind is tough too. I'm glad Campbell is playing now because he is getting experience, but the point is that we won last week because the ENTIRE TEAM played well, it wasn't just because of the QB switch. Who wrote that article, and why would you post such blasphemy?! Are you a Cowboys fan in disguise? Are you in cahoots with Eli Manning?

Re: Oh Brother Gibbs Right Choice But Maybe Too Late ,thanks Old Man!

If the D was playing lights out all year the way they did last week, one can only imagine where we'd be right now. Probably in the thick of the playoff chase, that's for damn sure. Enough with this blaming one or two players, football is not that simple.

Tough thread here!!
I think Gibbs has been criticized plenty, just as the organization as a whole has. Sure, Skins fans have been hesitant to blame him because he got us to the playoffs & is trying to stabilize the team long-term. We know he knows what he’s doing.
What is most annoying about this article, is that if you’re blaming Gibbs for not playing JC till now after only 2 starts, don’t you have to then at least credit him for making the move to get him when no other teams did?

In my opinion, Gibbs consistently has taken blame and has been blamed by others. Furthermore, there is no guarantee that Campbell was ready even a month ago.

This article makes no sense whatsoever and this guy obviously pays zero attention to the Redskins.

Gibbs has received plenty of heat from the DC media and he is ALWAYS the first one to point the finger at himself.

And it's not 4 different offenses in 4 years for JC, try 6 of 6.

This guy hasn't even heard of the infamous 700 page playbook, he's off by 200.

I find that it's helpfull to make it clear to people when you are quoting an article or something that another person said. Often, this will deflect undue critism from you.
Providing links are often a nice way to show that you yourself had nothing to do with the production of an article, especially one that may be met with hostility here on the WP.
Another fine way to help make sure no one mistakes someone else's words for your own is to use the Quote feature, which was kindly provided to us by our Mods. If you're not familiar with this feature, it is a little icon above located above the area where you type and it looks like a thought box from a comic book. The move was about preparing for the future (hopefully about 10) seasons more than salvaging this season. With no defense, Portis or Moss, it's already a lost season.

Campbell will get PLENTY of experience and I think the timing was fine.

Brunell WOULD have been better for this year, for the postseason...but he can't take us there alone....so it's Campbell time.

Where does this come from? Personally, from what I saw in the playoffs from Brunell last year, I was ready to start Campbell from day 1. It would have been rougher to start, but we'd be in a better position now. Would have forced the run game to stay going while he learned, and that in turn would help our D.

Do you think things might have been different had Portis not gotten hurt that first preseason game? I mean, if he was healthy and able to carry the team like he essentially did at the end of last year that Gibbs would have been more comfortable putting Campbell in earlier?

No. Gibbs made it pretty clear that Brunnell was the guy. I am not sure where I read it, but the consensus seemed to be that the team thought it was ready for a SB run. As such, Gibbs was going to go with his experienced QB to get them there and, remember, Brunnell was the QB when they made their playoff run last year. I am sure Gibbs thought Brunnell was the one to turn around the offensive woes again this year and only went to Campbell after becoming convinced Brunnell wasn't getting it done (two years ago, we went through the same thing before he put in Ramsey).
