AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
Interesting article on the current offseason approach, perhaps the year round approach is burning guys out?

Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
I don't see how it couldn't. There has to be a happy medium between Gibbs approach and a free-for-all. It sounds odd that everyone is on the same workout regimen - that part just doesn't make sense at all.

Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
hey, its a different mind set now with these players. they have the money to spend on their own training needs and personal trainers. Not like in the 80's and early 90's. I dont generally have a problem with guys working out on their own, but when its time to come to the park and work during the offseason, they better be ready and be in tremendous shape. I kind of agree with the guys statements. the NFL is a year round thing now and guys do get burned out.

Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
I am not to sure about all this. Remember when Taylor skipped out of these practices and worked out in Miami. Everyone was making a huge deal about it and all that.
Well he didnt participate in the voluntary workouts and it seems he is still getting burned on a regular basis. It seems that missing out on the offseason workouts didnt really help him that much... |

Whatever you want to identify as the reason for Taylor's regression (personally, I tend to buy the coaching argument promulgated in that ESPN piece) Taylor remains one of the true physical specimens in this league. What I love about Gibbs though is the humility with which he approaches his job. No ego, no I'm in the HOF and you aren't, just a genuine willingness to do whatever it takes to win. |
Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
Whatever it takes to get this team on the right track, I'm all for it. We've got too many good players and coaches to be 6-10 (yes we'll beat the Giants tomorrow)!

Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
Phillip Daniels should just stfu. What the hell has he done since he's been here other than wimp out, sit out injured, or get out of breath? Save one game against Dallas, he's been as useless as an a$$hole on the elbow.
Daniels and Wynn are the most annoying team spokespersons. They don't do anything on the field and then sound all righteous and leader-like when they address the media. It should be mandatory for Daniels and Wynn to stay at Redskins park and follow the recommended offseason regimen. The rest of the players can workout wherever they want. |
Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
i used to play lacrosse year round and i told my coach that i was being burnt out and he said take a winter indoor season off. we played summer, fall, winter, and regular season in the spring. state champons i might add....

Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
If you've got "real Redskins", they'll do what they need to do on their own. They'll work real hard on their own, and they'll report to camp in great shape. The QB and the WRs will get together to develop chemistry on their own.
So many players are voicing their opinions on this subject. So many, that if Gibbs were to continue his year-round offseason program, it might send the signal that he doesn't trust them to do it on their own. If Gibbs believes in his guys, if he really is "as proud of this group as I have been of any team", if he thinks these guys "fight their guts out", and if he really feels like "there's no group of guys I'd rather go through this with", then he needs to trust them to do what's best for the team. A show of faith to the players may go a ways in the art of motivation. We'll find out real soon how much faith and trust he has in them. |
Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
Considering the talent on hand and the 10 notches in the loss column, I'd say everything is fair game for questioning right now. Glad to see Gibbs is open to taking another look.

Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
every team has ota's and every coach expects players there. we are not any different than those teams.
|
Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
whatever it takes to win, and the players should feel the same way
|
Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
I would want two things if OTA's are not mandatory - that all the recievers and Campbell get together as much as possible so they can get their timing down. Whether they do this in Ashburn, Miami or at Donovan's QB camp doesn't matter to me.
The second is as the article points out - start training camp earlier. As long as players stay in shape they can do it their way in my opinion. I think as long as you don't blow up the team completely continuity will eventually come and if you keep the schemes intact things can only get better. |

Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
It seems like the team should be able to establish a target weight for each player to retain and a physical standards list for them to maintain during the offseason. Ask each to either come to OTA's or show up for a one day test at some preset date before camp to prove they are on target. If they fail at that time, then I can see putting the pressure on the player to stay for the remainder of the "in house" OTA program.
There has to be a middle ground between respecting the professional players and protecting the teams investment. |
Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
I don't think its as big of a deal as the title of the article states. Gibbs will do what it takes to win period. If that means changing things he will.
|
Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
I think the way the Skins operate their offseason is a big deal, and I think with the way this season has gone the best thing they could do is change things up.
Let the players get away for a while, let them do their own thing, maybe have less OTA's, and start training camp earlier and have a more rigorous camp. |
Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
is there anyone on this board that thinks that coach gibbs will not do whatever it takes to win?
|
Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
This is a bunch of crap. I don't know about you guys but my job is 52 weeks per year and I might add I make a lot less than the lowest paid guy on the team. Burn out this!!! They finish the season tonight and don't have to report back until March. That sounds like a 3 month vacation to me. They get paid millions to play a game. If they fail and lose like these idiots they talk about having to try harder, If we had the same sucess in our jobs we'd be fired. I agree there is a big problem at Redskin Park when your "core players" complain about working. When they went 10 - 6 there training camp and OTA was the same.

Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
Phillip Daniels does have a valid point though.

Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
I am getting tired of the blind loyalty.
Everything needs to be re-evaluated. Gibbs just had the worst season of his career. Give them more time durning the offseason and bust their asses during a real traning camp, not the horseshit that they had this year. Good for Daniels. At least someone realizes that the current system needs an overhaul. "We're all in this together" "I want to get back to Redskin football" "He is a super smart guy" "There isn't a group of guys that I would rather be with" This is loser talk. I want to see him pissed off after wins. Not old grand-dad after losses. |
Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
I get this odd feeling that Gibbs doesn't have the attention of the team as much as he used to. These guys need to get motivated. It's time for Gibbs to stop with the babying and pull out the whip.

Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
reminds me a lot of when vermeil coached the rams.the players got tired of 2 3hour a day practices in pads at training camp, and the regular season.when they started winning,he cut back and won the sb with an unnamed qb they next year!

kinda like bruce smith did his last season with marty coaching, and the same for mr i'm too good to play that hard Deon"past time "sanders.he was so afraid he was gonna have to work hard in training camp under marty,he retired like the chicken$hit player/egomaniac he was! |
Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
Let's put this to rest, winning is the cure of all evils. No one said a damn word last year when we won a playoff game. Losing sucks and makes people say bad things. If we win next year, they will all praise Gibbs...watch.

There was a lot of beef on this board even when winning last year. We all agreed the season was a success, but we certainly had plenty of our own problems. |

If you need to do power lifting then go to the coaches and tell them this is the best way for me to get ready. But do your power lifting at Redskins Park. If the coaches want you at Redskins Park three days a week from March to June then you have to be there. Don't blame your piss poor play on the off season program. Both Wynn and Daniels are good locker room guys but it comes down to production. And neither are productive NFL players anymore. |

I was referring to the players, not the people here that have a variety of issues / problems at any given time. |

I think the players are just tired of sitting in the traffice everyday around the DC area and they just want to stay away from that shithole! |
Re: AP: Redskins growing weary of Gibbs' year-round routine
I find it very interesting that it is the BEST players who are saying this isn't working for them. A lot of these players know what (individual) training they need to do to be physically ready for the season. I know from personal experience (as a triathlete) that if I do leg work (with weights) during the period when I'm run training, I will get injured. I think that a lot of these guys may not be able to do the workouts they need in addition to the workouts they go through at the training camps. This may be one of the reasons we saw so many injuries this year. (We've had way too many injuries to players at the "speed" positions.) And if somebody's velocity isn't being pushed, bring in #28 to help them work on their afterburners.
Of course, we'll still need the receivers and JC to get together to get timing down. |

I've said it before and it bears repeating: I hope Gibbs gets downright medieval next training camp - two a days, with full contact in full pads EVERYDAY. Hell, during Gibbs 1.0, the Redskins practiced in full pads the entire regular season, and were among the most physical teams on a consistent basis. |

LOL!! It won't happen in this era but I would love to see it. Perhaps they can open training camp with the Oklahoma drill. |
