Grade Jason Campbell
vote and discuss, here are his numbers for his 7 starts this year

Re: Grade Jason Campbell
50% is not going to get it done with the types of throws he attempts.
He throws too many grounders and has trouble on third downs. Last night he was 16/18 at one point and made some great throws. But that was one quarter our of a few games. I give him a D because he has missed too many simple throws and checks down too fast. and because im still mad about the game... |
Re: Grade Jason Campbell
he gets an A from me because he gives us a chance to win
|
Re: Grade Jason Campbell
most of the throws he misses are timing throws that can easily be fixed. good poise, and moves well in the pocket. some issues with hurrying some throws( all footwork) that can easily be fixed. overall, pretty impressive for someone that has been sitting around as long as he has
|
Re: Grade Jason Campbell
I'm giving him a solid B.
Based on the fact he went from the #3 to the starter and had no meaningful work with the first team is really amazing considering what he accomplished in such a short period of time. The things I really like is he appeared to get more comfortable with each start, he likes to take his deep shots, and he's always cool under fire. Just wait until he settles into this offense and develops some chemistry with his WRs, the sky's the limit for this guy. |

Going from number three to starting is vastly different from going from number two to the starting QB. He basically learned on the fly, and did darn good. I gave him a B. |
Re: Grade Jason Campbell
Missing the short throws bothers me. he short hops too many throws for a guy with a "strong arm".
I think he has a good future because he has all the intangibles. But I'm not grading his future, I'm grading his past. I can overlook the usuall rookie mistakes but I can't overlook his struggles on third down and his missthrows. He really struggled with the must fundamental part of being a QB, Getting the ball to the WR. |

Guys have practice speed and game speed, which they pointed out last night is why Campbell has such a good comfort level right now with Cooley. Cooley goes 100% in practice just like in games so the timing is already there between the two. The timing between Campbell and Moss is lacking right now and I think that's something that will be an easy fix as they work together more. |

But I didn't really understand that comment about Cooley last night. Because what I got out of it was that guys like El, Moss, Thrash, etc. aren't giving their all in practice. And it struck me as odd (and unfortunate) that that would be allowed to happen when there's a new QB here trying to develop a rythym with these guys. By the way, I give Campbell a C. He's getting better though |

Last night he out played Eli hands down. Heck, I think in the last few games, he's even had a better pctg than Phillip Rivers in San Diego. And he's thrown for a TD, in some very tight spaces, I might add, in nearly every start. |

The comment about Cooley going full throttle is probably only half the story. Young QBs always tend to focus more on the TE, it's the safer throw and the underneath stuff is what they are more comfortable with early. |
Re: Grade Jason Campbell
Campbell gets a B- from me at this point.
Curve based on his youth and inexperience. If he had been starting all along making some of the mistakes he has made his grade would be around a C-. I like the upside, I like the confidence, I like the arm strength, and the seemingly leadership abilities. Not to mention the way he steps up in the pocket. I dont like some of the decision making, some of the accuracy issues, although I think these things can be fixed. |
Re: Grade Jason Campbell
I give JC a B+. All he needs is more reps with the 1st team. He can make ALL the throws necessary to be a successful NFL QB, plus he has mobility. All in due time. He's only had 7 starts. I'm excited about next year's offense!

att: 207 comp: 110 %: 53.1 yds: 1297 TD: 10 INT: 6 rate: 76.5
Also: 23 rushes, 112 yards (4.89 ypc) -- know this isn't a primary stat and he's no Mike Vick, but it does give another dimension to the numbers. Note that last year Brunell had 42 rushes for 111 yards (2.64 ypc) Projected to a full season, Jason's numbers would look like this: ATT: 472 CMP: 251 PCT: 53.1% YDS: 2964 TD: 22.8 INT: 13.7 (don't have a good rating calculator handy, but I assume it would remain consistent) RSH: 52 YDS: 256 This puts him the Grossman-Rivers-McNair-Losman tier with regards to passing stats (though his % complete is down in Bruce Gradkowski territory). His rushing numbers would be on par with an Aaron Brooks or David Garrard. Again, not Vick-like (or even McNabb-like) numbers, but not a statue in the pocket either. |
Re: Grade Jason Campbell
Also, just for the sake of grading his progression, here is his QB rating each week (number in parentheses is ranking of that team's pass defense)
Wk 11 vs Tampa: 92.3 (19) Wk 12 vs Carolina: 74.2 (5) Wk 13 vs Atlanta: 52.2 (26) Wk 14 vs Philly: 57.9 (10) Wk 15 vs New Orleans: 83.0 (3) Wk 16 vs St. Louis: 82.2 (8) Wk 17 vs Giants: 96.2 (28) |
Re: Grade Jason Campbell
I gave him a B+ (which wasn't an option). He's making the mistakes I would expect him to (like not sliding - man, that was scary), and he is showing flashes of greatness (TD pass to Moss a couple weeks back). All this with minimal first team practice. My expectations next season, however, are going to be through the roof compared to this season.
|
Re: Grade Jason Campbell
As of his quaterback play in general I would have to give Campbell a "C-" his play last night brought his grade up but as far as potential I would give him an "B" to an "B+"
|
Re: Grade Jason Campbell
Well with all other things considered, I'd give him a B. I think his scrambling ability to just buy some extra time and pick up some short first downs is a great asset to this team. He has some timing issues to work on, and become a little smarter, but I couldn't be happier with what I have seen from him thusfar. I thought he played very very well and I'm excited to see him next year.

Jason's QB rating through his first 7 games is pretty good, IMO -- smack in the middle of Leinart/Palmer territory, and for my money, I'm extremely happy with that. I know a lot of guys here are saying they have astronomical expectations for the kid next year, and I think we all want to have those, but I don't think it's that uncommon for a good QB to take an extra year to develop fully. I just hope when that happens, Jason is still wearing burgundy and gold. |
Re: Grade Jason Campbell
I gave him a B. While his stats appear to show him as an average QB, I think that there are a few things that I take into account that make me very happy with his performance.
1. The other QBs who's stats are listed for comparison (thanks dgack) didn't start as the third team QB with virtually no practice reps with the first team offense. Campbell did very well under that senario. 2. Some QBs fall apart under pressure or after they screw up (like throwing an INT). Campbell has shown remarkable resilience under those circumstances. He appears to thrive under pressure and gains focus after mistakes. Although he appears quite and poised, this shows how competative he really is. 3. He keeps his eyes down field even when he is under pressure and still has the physical skills and feel for the game to make things happen with his feet. He has done it every game and defenses have to respect that or they get burned. How he will fair in grasping the entire offense, looking off receivers, throwing accuracy.... that is all up in the air, but the things listed above we now know about him. I'm pretty happy. (So lets fix the defense!) |
Re: Grade Jason Campbell
Like what he said above, for his circumstances Campbell has done above average. But there is room for improvement.
Needs to works on short routes and quick throws because he still seems to be a few steps behind the D. It is almost like he needs people to be WIDE open(except on Fly routes) to throw it to them. He also needs to work on cutting down the windup and somehow see if that stance can be altered. Any extra seconds are good for a young QB. Kid needs to learn how to slide, or he is gonna get his head taken off. |

Re: Grade Jason Campbell
Solid B...You can't ask for anything more out of a QB's 1st 7 starts. He played well enough to win most of those games were it not for the worst defense in the NFL backing him up.

I think Jason is going to be fine going into next year. Off season work is where it all starts and that is why Peyton is so on point with his WR's. Moss, LLoyd and ARE had better be here during the off season if they expect to get better. |

Re: Grade Jason Campbell
I'm giving Jason a B. His play in just seven games has far exceeded my expectations. He's gained invaluable experience, and once he get's more time with his recievers, he's going to be beautiful to watch. He has no flaws that can't be fixed.

WHAT???? An A? Come on guys...I know we like the guy, but let's not see what wasn't there. He was OK at best. I gave him a C. He was extremely inconsistent, and just because he wasn't afraid to throw down field, doesn't mean he gets an A. He definitely has a lot of potential, and has shown a lot of life, but he missed a lot of open receivers, some very short throws that bounced. He'll be an A eventually, but not even close this year. |
Re: Grade Jason Campbell

I think he has alot of potential but in my eyes, his actual play is only worthy of a D. |
Hey, Dgak...can you run those numbers for Vince Young, T. Romo, and Rivers over the same seven games?
For the sake of apples-to-apples, I'll compare them for their first 7 NFL starts, rather than over the same 7 weeks in the NFL (wasn't sure if that's what you were asking or not). In order, best to worst (note, does not include final stats for week 16 games) T.Romo First 7 Starts Week 7 vs Carolina: 86.6 Week 8 vs Washington: 109.0 Week 9 vs Arizona: 126.8 Week 10 vs Indianapolis: 89.5 Week 11 vs Tampa: 148.9 Week 12 vs Giants: 58.1 Week 13 vs New Orleans: 58.8 Season stats: 197-305 (64.6%), 2582yd, 17TD, 12INT, 93.5 rating P.Rivers First 7 Starts Week 1 vs Oakland: 133.9 Week 2 vs Tennessee: 99.1 Week 3 vs Baltimore: 75.0 Week 4 vs Pittsburgh: 90.1 Week 5 vs San Fran: 116.8 Week 6 vs Kansas City: 82.1 Week 7 vs St. Louis: 108.2 Season stats: 265-436 (60.8%), 3157yd, 20TD, 8INT, 90.5 rating V.Young First 7 Starts Week 4 vs Dallas: 47.3 Week 5 vs Indianapolis: 34.4 Week 6 vs Washington: 85.6 Week 7 vs Houston: 87.4 Week 8 vs Jacksonville: 30.2 Week 9 vs Baltimore: 63.9 Week 10 vs Philadelphia: 66.7 Season stats: 169-321 (52.6%), 1972yd, 12TD, 11INT, 69.7 rating He finished better than Vince Young. Romo started off on fire but has pretty much imploded as the season progressed. Rivers has been consistently good, though I wouldn't call his play spectacular, and he has the luxury of the best and most durable player in the league lining up at RB. |

I say B for performance. He added some new life to the team once he got in there. It was painful to watch the offense dink and dunk it with the over-the-hill Brunell, Campbell's play was very refreshing to see. |

They'll notice him next year when we're leading the NFC East! I think next year could actually be special, I have complete faith in Gibbs to turn things back around again. You saw how things got turned around after the 6-10 season in '04. Expect a similiar turnaround next season! |
