Name Your Core Redskins
I've been thinking about this since all the articles have been written about the internal challenges we've gone through this year.
I love every player on the current team....Archuletta included:) But I was thinking if I absolutely had to start over with the current group we have and build from there, who would I keep. Again, I'm making this decision based on what I perceive as a core Skin and not neccessarily their talent or what I've seen on the field. I would have to start with Jon Jansen. I think this guy truly bleeds burgundy and gold. Chris Samuels. Rock Cartwright. Mike Sellers. Ethan Albright. Randy Thomas LaDell Betts Ade Jimoh Chris Cooley Jason Campbell Sean Taylor Santana Moss Reynaldo Wynn Phillip Daniels Derrick Dockery Yep, that's it. |
Re: Name Your Core Redskins
Good list, Jansen, who else EVER played with TWO broken thumbs. Add Portis, he's a baller
|
Re: Name Your Core Redskins
Marcus Washington?
|
Re: Name Your Core Redskins
I left those two out for some reason. I think Portis could easily be on that list...I just left him off for some reason.

Re: Name Your Core Redskins
How come B. Lloyd isn't on that list?!?!

haha, good one!!!!! |
Re: Name Your Core Redskins
Honestly, I think core Redskins is a loosely used term with Gibbs. I mean, when you hear teammates talk about Antonio Pierce and Ryan Clark, they say they were actually "core Redskins". Clark was widely popular in the locker room. I don't actually believe that Gibbs wouldn't give up one of his core Redskins for a player he thought was better.

Re: Name Your Core Redskins
Hard not to include any of the offensive line, though Rabach at times seems like an outcast. The other four though, they're beginning to make their own history right next to the Hogs if you ask me.
But too often, I think we get hung up on names that are nothing more than a familiarity to us as fans. When you actually get down to examination of their contribution on the field though, it gets difficult -- objectivity loses out. Take Renaldo Wynn for instance. He seems to be a fan favorite, and for the life of me I cannot figure out why. People talk about him as the "locker room leader" and BINGO! ... he gets the tag of a 'core Redskin' and his complete and utter lack of any playmaking ability whatsoever gets tossed out the window, and gets a pass. Check these numbers: in the last two seasons ('05 & '06) he has played in 15 games each year, has 30 and 14 tackles for the seasons respectively, and one half sack. He'd have serious trouble making the roster of any other team in the league. Someone please explain that one to me. |

Re: Name Your Core Redskins
I thought I heard Gibbs say in an interview that James Thrash was a core Redskin?
Also what exactly does a Core redskin mean? Is it a term to describe players who have outstanding work ethic and lead by example? Or is it a term to mean guys we absolutely have to have on our team to win the games? Couldn't stating that you are a core Redskin make some of the lesser known guys feel a little slighted? I don't see other teams terming their players as core guys - why do the Skins do this? |

Gibbs may not single out players who are underperforming, but what does it say to a player who gets omitted from the "core" list that Gibbs always talks about? Props to Bill B on that one. |

Mike Sellers should be on everyones list.

My core Redskins are:
1. Me 2. Myself 3. I
If there is anything I have learned is that there is no such thing as "core Redskin." This league is about "what have you done for me lately." I would even go as far as proclaim that Sean Taylor won't be back with the Skins when his contract is up. He'll want back-pay just like Champ and the Skins will let him walk. Hell, I'm not even sure he wants to be back with the Skins. I don't buy this "core Redskins" horse shit. Core my ass. |
Re: Name Your Core Redskins
Well like I said, talent aside. I did forget to add James Thrash.
But here's how I see a core Redskin. Someone that consistently plays through injuries. They rarely miss games. I get the impression that losing really bugs them than more than other people in the locker room. And they promote unity. Here's my reasoning for including Wynn and Daniels. During the off season, they planned a fishing trip for all the Dlineman. Just to get that chemistry thing going. That said a lot to me about how much they really care about the team. Also, I get the impression they would take a cut to stay on the team, we'll see. |

This is a term from the Gibbs I era, when he could hold on to a core group like jacoby, Bostic, Warren, Monk, etc., for 10-12 years. Those days are gone. It's a different league now. . |

I can't hear the words "core redskin" w/out immediately thinking...

Re: Name Your Core Redskins
Brandon Lloyd, Adam Archuleta.

Re: Name Your Core Redskins
On Offense:
The entire starting O-line Moss Randle El Portis Betts Cooley Sellers Campbell On Defense: Griffin Daniels Washington McIntosh (hopefully) Springs Taylor Rogers On Special Teams: Rock Cartwright Ade Jimoh Thrash K. Campbell Frost (his punting was vastly more consistent the 2nd half of the season) |

No, but basically the whole offense with the exception of Lloyd. I expect this offense to be nearly unstoppable if Campbell can get up to speed. On Defense, I'd ditch Wynn, Archuleta, Holdman, and Marshall. I would pick up a more permanent solution at SS. In addition to the core I listed, I'd keep Golsten, Salavea, and Montgomery for DT depth, and Andre Carter as our lone pass rushing DE. I would then spend the 1st round pick on the best pass rushing DE/LB available. I believe it would be a huge mistake to just blow the team up, so in that regard, yes, I'm in favor of keeping most of it intact. |

All he want's to do is try and blow people up instead of making the tackle. Let him walk.....as long as we get something for him. |

This "core Redskin" stuff is a load of BS from people wishing this team was like it was back in the "glory days." Let's all be honest: this team has established a pattern over the past 5+ years of disgarding players like dirty underwear. The fact is the league is a different place than it was in the 80s and 90s. Drafting a guy like Art Monk and having him stay on the team for 13 or so years is a thing of the past. It's a thing of the past for most teams out there, and ESPECIALLY for the Washington Redskins. If there is any team that does NOT have "core players" it's the Redskins. This team has a completely different roster every 2 or 3 years. We exchange, trade and drop players like there's no tomorrow, and we consistently pay the penalty. Dreaming about "core Redskins" is like talking about when a gallon of gas cost a nickel and you didn't have to lock your doors cause the neighborhood was so safe. |
Re: Name Your Core Redskins
When Gibbs came back, I loved this term & was glad to hear him use it, made me think that there would be a commitment to keeping our starters at least.
Now the cold reality of the salary cap & the Danny's style of mgmt. are setting in. This offseason will be crucial to Gibbs' relationship w/players. He's got to back up the "core" talk. |
