Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
Calvin Johnson to enter NFL draft - Yahoo! News
I know, we have enough wide receivers, but have you seen this guy play? He's gonna be nasty in the pros. |
Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
If he's there at #6, I can't think of a more perfect trade partner than the Falcons. They need a WR who can catch, some good PR after this past year and anyone who ever lived in GA knows they love their local college players. Trading down to #10 and pick up a 3rd round pick would be perfect.
|
Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
Yeah, one of the few "sure things" in a long time at the position.
|
Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
Good he is out of the ACC

Stellar idea. Alan Branch would probably still be there at #10. So would either Cason or Hall if we wanted to go CB. |

Hmm...the real question, then, is who could we trade that 3rd rounder for? Smoot maybe? |

I like DRAFTING someone. :biggthump

SF has a guy with good size and speed at WR who just needs the right system to flourish.. Taylor Jacobs. |

I really like that idea. But I've heard, in all seriousness, that the Lions (yes, the Lions) are really interested in drafting CJ. |

Part of the contract would require him to change his name to "Calvin Williams". That sounds like something we would do - draft another running back or something. |

D-RAFT? What is that? |

I think its when you are picked for the army... Why would CJ want to join the army? I think we need to read up on this draaafft stuff. Seriously, watch us trade our pick for a player or something. |
Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
I hope we just use the stupid pick

Could also look at Jamaal Anderson at that spot |

Wow! Good thing they have a GM to make sure that team is getting the right talent. |

You can get more than a third round pick by trading from 6 to 10. Detroit got a second round pick a few years ago going back only one pick from like #7 to #8. If we trade back we need a second rounder. Maybe to #12 or #13. |
Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
That huge DT Alan Branch declared today. It's on espn. We might be able to use him and he is predicted to be there.

Trade partner???? If he's there we need to draft him. Plain and simple. |

Really? You think we should take Calvin Johnson in place of our other, arguably more pressing, needs? |
Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
Wouldn't Tampa Bay or Cleveland take Johnson? The Bucs haven't had a solid wideout in eons.

I can't see the Browns going after a WR. And supposedly the Bucs want to find a replacement for Simeon Rice. So they might target Gaines Adams |

I would draft him in a heartbeat if he is sitting there. Best player on the board hands down. I watch a lot of college and this guy is a can't miss. Plus he's not an asshole like TO. He comes from a good family and keeps his mouth shut. CJ is a TD machine. He's a difference maker in the red zone and we need to score more points. Because of his size and speed he will cause all kinds of problems for the defense. Can you imagine the PI's he would draw? I know our defense sucks but you can't pass on a guy like this. But he'll be long gone by the 6th pick. |

:banghead: Jesus. The last thing our team needs is a WR. Another weapon for our offense to use so we can score 40 a game to keep up with our shitty ass defense? A WR is a retarded idea. Next. I can't see Tampa or Cincy taking him. They seem to be more prudent drafters and like taking the more sure things like linemen and so forth. Falcons seem like a solid idea. |

Outside of Moss are any of them threats in the red zone? No. None of them are. LLoyd only runs one or two routes and does not go over the middle. And ARE is only a 3rd WR who has never caught over 50 balls in one season. People talk about how bad the defense is. And it is bad. But if you have the chance to take someone who has Hall of Fame ability you simply can't pass on him. |
Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
HOF ability? Wow.
|
Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
So if he is available at 6 what were the other 5 teams thinking when they passed on him. Bunch of idiots I guess.
I'd say you are potentially WAY over-valuing him. WRs are bust magnets and even the best of them usually have adjustment periods. We can pass and I could almost guarnatee that we will if given the opportunity. |

The guy is 6'4 or 6'5 and runs like a 4-4 and has awesome hands. I saw him play several times because I'm a MD. grad so I tend to watch alot of ACC. What I saw was a can't miss. But you are correct. WR's tend to take a year or two to get adjusted to the pro game. But if he turns out to be a stud and we pass on him I'm going to just shake my head. Texans just look foolish right now with M. Williams and his one or two sacks. |

You are kidding....Maybe Matt Millen is sick of his job, and is just trying to get back at all those fans who staged walkouts. |

Well part of it could be a smokescreen. He could be trying to get someone to move up there to take Johnson and then get the Lions more picks. It's early though so you hear all sorts of rumors |

Wouldn't that be the ultimate though, if he chose his fourth top 10 receiver in 5 years, just to kind of say F-U to the world and the city of Detroit? Then he lit a bunch of motown records on fire and drove off in a Toyota? I would gain a little respect for him if he did that. |

LOL - nice touch! Strangely, I agree with skinsfan69 and FRPLG (and paintrain). You should draft the best player available. However, if you don't need the player (as we don't need a WR right now), then you shouldn't pick him - you should trade the pick. |
Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
I can't imagine anyone passing on Calvin Johnson, that man will be insane in the pros. Except the Cardinals I guess...
I can't imagine anyone passing on Calvin Johnson, that man will be insane in the pros. It possibly could be far, far worse.

Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
I truly doubt he'll be available at #6. I bet he goes in the top 3. A guy like him only comes along every 10 years or so.
|
Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
If he's available that means teams might be desparate enough to offer us something good for him. Maybe a middle 1st & early 2nd or middle 1st and next years 1st? If he's available.

Outside of Santana who in the hell do we have at WR that's worth a damn? And please don't say crybaby LLoyd or ARE. Both are number 3 WR's. Who goes over the middle besides Cooley? Who can we throw a jump ball too? |

Who do we have now that's going to keep the opposing team's score below 20 so that we can win with the talent we have? Sure, if we got CJ we might still only put up 20+ points a game, but we're still lacking in the defense department and teams don't win Super Bowls by simply being able to out-gun the other team. How about them Colts? |

How about them Colts????? They have a game this weekend, we don't. They also make the playoffs every year. But I agree with you 100% about our defense. But it comes down to who's the best player. If CJ becomes a great player and let's say Adams or the guy on Mich. becomes a solid starters than who gets the better of the deal? Someone brough up a great point in another thread. The last time we drafted for need we got Carlos Rogers because of Smoot. As it turns out there were MUCH better players on the board. D. Ware and Merriman. |
Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
If he's still available after the Raiders pick, I'll be surprised. I don't see a Raider's future with Moss or Porter in the mix. They need someone or sometwo. CJ would be a pretty good fit for them, not sure about the other way around. Poor Calvin, we hardly knew ye.
|
Re: Calvin Johnson entering NFL draft
I agree. He'll be long gone by the time we pick.
