Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
Tossing the Red Flag to challenge that fumble was absurd. Going for it on 4th down instead of kicking the field goal with a All Pro, Glad he is gone.

Marty didn't get the stupid penalties or fumble the interception. If McCree holds onto that ball, the game is over. |
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
Bottom line, Marty is now a pathetic 5-13 in the post-season having lost his last 6. He will go down as one of the worst big game coaches in NFL history, and probably would have broken our hearts had he been given the chance to stay.

Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
Stupid thread.
I'm sure most of us would have rather have seen Marty stay here instead of Spurrier. |

Marty can't control everything. I think despite whatever his record is, alot of the crap that has happened to him, he can't control. You can't control Ernest Byner fumbling, you cant control guys not catching Interceptions, ect. Yeah, his record sucks, but there werent too many things I would have done differently (outside of that one challenge today). The Patriots, whatever their seeding are, are just that good. Theres a reason everyone said all week the Pats had a legit chance, and a reason why no one is suprised. IMO. |
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
I think the Pats and the Eagles are the two best coached teams in the NFL. The Pats deserve to be where they are.
|
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
I was a really young redskins fan when Marty was hired and fired but I definitely don't think he should have been fired. Snyder just wanted the ol' ball coach that bad.
Should he have gone for one extra play? I think he could have squeezed one to the outside in there but he would be risking a sack. 10 more yards would have been key. At the time I was watching it with friends(getting ready for the 24 premiere) and I was like, he is going to kick it. My friends were screaming at the screen (who wants the pats to win another one?) and then I saw that it was a 54. |
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
You've gotta love Belichick and his genius. I mean the gameplan to limp badly through the first three quarters only to win on a series of improbable plays is the perfect counter to Martyball!
|
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
At first I was think that you can't blame the fumbles and penalties on Marty, but to a degree you can. The GM doesn't get a free pass on them either.
What I saw was that the Chargers had the talent and offensive and defensive gameplans to win that game. The problem is that a few guys played tight or stupid. The headbutt penalty cost the Chargers the game. That is a stupid player being undisiplined. Fault order - player, GM, coach. Also, you can't really coach people not to fumble, but you can remind them to protect the ball, and you can find ways to make the guys, who are playing to tight, relax a little. Going from 15 turnovers all season to 4 in this game proves that the guys were to tight and that has to go on the coach. Bottom line, Marty isn't the offensive guy or the defensive guy. He is the guy in charge of making sure his guys are disiplined, physically, and mentally prepared. He missed on two out of three. |
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
would all the redskin fans out there that wish the skins were 14-2 this season, please raise their hands? thats what i thought. everyone also said bill cowher couldn't win the big one, until last season, now everyone wants him as their coach. i wish he had never left. he definitely had the skins moving in the right direction
|
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
Gotta say though, if you're team consistently wins each and every year, like alot of Marty's teams did with Cleveland, KC, and now SD, I'd be happy knowing that he brings respect to a franchise. However, he's never been able to take any team all the way. I do believe it must be a curse on him or something. He couldn't even get there with Joe Montana (although he was an aging Joe Montana.)

Marty can't win - literally. If he goes for the field goal, he gets accused of being to conservative. Instead, he does what he never does in the playoffs - he plays aggressive. He's as cursed as Belichick is charmed. The headbutt, the fumbles, the dropped passes - all are things that rarely happened in the regular season. Not saying he's blameless, all coaches are responsible to a certain extent for everything that happens on the field. I feel sorry for him. |

The fumbled punt then the guy tries to pick it up, just as dumb as the head butt. The fumbles and droped balls also did them in. |
Stupid thread.
I'm sure most of us would have rather have seen Marty stay here instead of Spurrier.
VERY VERY stupid thread. Anyone who knows football knows that Marty is a very solid NFL coach. Alot of the stuff that went on yesterday is out of the coaches control. Dropped passes, personel fouls and fumbles on INT's are not the coaches fault. |
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
Marty didn't even have a head set on. The man didn't lose the game, the players coughed up the ball way too many times. I will say this though, going for it on 4th down was stupid but then again he wouldn't have done that in the past and this time he took a chance. The truth is, when it comes to Marty damned if you do, damned if you don't.
In any case if the Chargers fire him they are retarded. |
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
As many bad decisions that he's made in the playoffs he's been just as cursed with pure bad luck. Marty is still a quality coach.
|
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
Take away that headbutt, and that game would've been totally different IMO. Thats not Marty's fault at all. I can only blame him for the challenge on the int/fumble, but that didn't cost them the game. It was the stupid penalties and dropped passes.
Sucks because I was rooting for SD and Marty. I kinda feel bad for him. |
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
Numbers don't lie. Marty is a get you close coach. But Spurrier is a get you nowhere coach and I'd rather Marty had stuck around long enough to get us close and get fired and then someone come in a win a SB for us. I am betting that's what happens in SD sometime in the next few years.
|
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
Yeah, it'd really have sucked going 14-2 this year, if for no other reason than I have a good hunch which division rival would have swept us.

Marty is also a great GM/talent scout. His drafts in the last few years have been incredible, top to bottom, which is one of the main reasons his team is so good. His young teamplayers made some big mistakes. Marty should not be blamed for this lose. Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year - I would have perferred Marty over Spurrier any day. If Marty had stayed with the team one or two more years he would have at least drafted some good players as opposed to the shit Snyder/Cerrato/Spurrier got us. |

So is Marty the reason why they lost that game? No. The reason was missed opportunities. |
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
BTW. SD has as bright of a future as any team in this league. A probowl QB, Great young offensive line, a future hof r/b, a terrific fb, a young very good defensive, and a stud lb in Merriman. If this were the skins, i would be very happy. They will be in it for years to come.
|
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
@redsk1: i'm not so sure you should call Philip Rivers a pro bowl qb. True, he did get voted there, but he really sucked towards the end of the year, and Tomlinson carried that team.
As for Marty, he should stay. It's not his fault they lost that game. If they fire him they are basically putting themselves back at square one. If they keep him all they need is a little more playoff experience with that young team and they will be a contender for years to come. |
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
Even though I put some of the blame on Marty, I think that I should note a couple of things. Marty has put together a 14-2 record with a team that appears set to contend year in and year out for a few years. Teams don't do that without a good coach. SD would be crazy to let Marty go. I for one think that the players will be far more lethal next year if they reach the playoffs, and I expect they will. Marty will simply get to play the tape for these guys and let them see for themselves how they shot themselves in the foot. Pretty cut and dry.

I think Sean Payton has done an outstanding job in NO. Nothing to do with the whole Katrina thing, I just mean he's a fantastic, gutsy football coach. The guy has balls and makes some tough, risky calls that work out pretty well. |
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
I never blamed the loss on Marty, I just simply stated that his decesions were poor and I am glad he only lasted one year here. Marty made the decesion to challenge the fumble. He also decided to not kick the field goal. Both poor decesions. Now if this is such a stupid thread then give me reasons why either of these bonehead choices by MArty was smart. These types of choices are typical of years past with him. As far as disclpined teams they have been to a point but there were way to many personal fouls by his team to discount the notion that they were not displined which is the HEAD COACHES JOB!!! Glad he only lasted one year in DC.
|
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
Hmmm, let me see. The Redskins are 33-47 since Marty was dumped at the end of '01. Marty is 47-34 since he left. I get to see and attend more regular season games than playoff games and would have enjoyed a 47-34 record a lot more.
The Chargers played like what they are - a tight, nervous group making their first playoff appearance in a long time, against playoff veterans. I wish we had the Chargers problems and talent here. Lay off Marty. |
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
Marty is a great coach. Proven. Not a Superbowl winner, but part of several different playoff caliber franchises. Snyder was stupid to get rid of Schotty for Spurrier, but he wanted him and went for it. Spurrier ate the money and played golf. Now Gibbs is back at Redskins Park sleeping on a cot. Marty will be back in San Diego next season. My ultimate nightmare would see the Redskins against the Chargers next year in the Superbowl. LT would run all over us with the defense we have now. Tiki used us up. What would future HOF'er LT do to us?

Assuming we get to the SB to face the Chargers I'd have to bet our defense would be much improved. |

On this occasion, you're right! This thread is totally absurd! Marty is a fine coach who just seems to be cursed come playoff time. His guys just lost there minds a few times Sunday, and the Patriots got an unbelievably lucky break on the Mcree interception then fumble right back to the Pats. I still wish Marty could've stayed with the Skins longer, instead of Snyder going after that dunce the OBC. Of course that's ancient history now with Gibbs back in the saddle, but still. |
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
at least he gets his team into the playoffs. I dont see the skins getting into the playoffs as often as he has lately. I rather lose some playoffs games instead of making it two times in the last 14 yrs.

Now, when you say Tony Romo is a Pro Bowl QB, then I can understand some doubt being raised about whether he belongs, talk about sucking towards the end of the year! He went from next Staubach to next Drew Henson just like that! |
Re: Thank the Heavens Marty Lasted One Year
Get off Marty's back. At 14-2, he is doing something right. I'd rather be watching my team in the playoffs than figuring out who my team needs to draft.

Apparently ESPN PAge 2 thinks similar to me.
Read the whole article. They gave MArty his biggest choke/gag ever for the way he handled the chargers/Pats game. ESPN.com: Page 2 : The Marty Gag Factor |

Marty finished 8 - 3 , with a cast of , T. Banks , R. Gardner and not much else ,,, we have C. Portis , Moss , Loyd, R El , Cooley , and Betts off the bench and we can't win freakin 6 games ?? No , Marty would not be in my top 5 choices for our coach , but he had our salary cap in better shape and won with a hell of alot less talent than we have now ?
