|
Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread
Over 300 yards total offense in on quarter! I hope some of you younger guys are getting to watch this game. I don't really see any difference between the speed of that game and today's NFL.
|
Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread
Just finished watching. It makes me kind of sad to see how we have fallen. The whole time I'm watching I'm thinking how bad we need a GM. Bethered sure messed up on some 1st and 2nd rounders but boy did he get some great players in the late rounds.
|
Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread
man I wish I had tivo cuz I missed it cuz we had to do a damn midnight opening @ work. it's on now but I think I can only make it through the second quarter since I've gotta be up @ 8ish.

Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread

Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread
I remember watching the game and the 2nd quarter but I forgot how bad the game started off. I bet there where alot of people righting us off and thinking that it was time that El and the Broncos win the SB. Then bam its the 2nd quarter and come half time the game was all but over. You start to see signs late in the first quarter that the Skins were getting the game under control but it just went crazy from there. Question, I did not realise that they reviewed plays back then. Did they stop at some point reviewing plays then started it back at another time?
|
Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread
I also remember a review in the 91SB. I think it was on an Art Monk TD. I am not sure when or why they stopped and started again.
|
Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread
They had replay in 86-87 and 91-92, and of course the current challenge system which they've been doing since 1999. In between I don't think they had replay, but I'm not positive and I can't find any clear history of replay.
|
Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread
It was nice having defensive ends!
|
Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread
I was thinking about the defensive ends last night! I'll tell ya, I'm not sure if Petitbone's system would've worked well without Manley and Mann in there. And you know, the linebackers really had to cover receivers quite a bit. In that game, I don't believe the Redskins ever sent in a nickel or dime formation..it was always a 4-3 defense with the cornerbacks playing man coverage. It really put alot on the Redskins secondary to make big plays for them. Watching that game last night seems like it was played just yesterday (no, not replayed mind you!) It also makes me long to wish we had the ability to go back in time!
One thing to note..I don't know if anybody caught this or not, but noticed when Jack Kent Cooke was asked about the Redskins being successful for years to come, he said something to the affect "as long as I am alive, the Redskins will be successful!" Wow, that couldn't have been any truer! I do wished that the Cooke family could've somehow kept the Redskins under their ownership! |
Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread
I'm so glad i watched the game last night. It gave me a true appreciation of just how good Joe Gibbs was in the first go round. Just seeing the Redskins play in the Super Bowl made me really excited about the future and the things that could happen.

Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread
I TIVO'd it...Watch the first quarter this morning getting ready for work...man I hope they play better in the second quarter...:silly:

Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread

Yeah, its funny how you tend to see these things when you watch the game on a replay. I never noticed him on the sidelines back years ago when I watched the game live. Of course, that was a long time ago, so I guess I wouldn't remember things like that. The cheerleaders just didn't do it for me though. I definitely like our present day cheerleaders alot better!:-) |
Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread
You know what, Joe Gibbs is an absolute genius! Even if he were to ever have two losing seasons in three years, I doubt anyone would ever criticize him because the great times he's brought to this team, boy are we spoiled with this guy around! After this game Joe and the boys could lose all the rest of their games, but he'd still always be a winner in my book! Go Skins!

Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread
I don't have the link, but this was from the Washington Post shortly before Gibbs' first game back in 2004:
"The date was Jan. 31, 1988, at San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium. It was Super Bowl XXII, and the Denver Broncos had stunned the Redskins by jumping to an early 10-0 lead. Most surprising, though, was the Broncos' abandonment of the standard four-linemen, three-linebacker, 4-3 defense they had employed all season in favor of a three-lineman, four-linebacker 3-4 look that had confused the Redskins' offense, particularly the Hogs on the offensive line. "This was after our first couple of possessions," Bostic said. "Coach Gibbs almost never came back to our offensive line meetings when we were on the bench. This time he did. He says, 'What are they doing to you up front?' We tell him what's going on. He puts his finger up to his face like he always does when he's thinking deep and he says, 'Okay, we're gonna zone block the defensive ends and we're gonna let the nose tackle stunt wherever he wants to go. We'll come back at 'em and run our counter plays and bottle them up inside.' "But on the first play, instead of running the ball, we give 'em a look, and we run a hitch pattern instead, and Ricky Sanders catches it for an 80-yard touchdown. Eighteen plays later, and that's all it was, we've basically won the Super Bowl at the half. We're up 35-10, Tim Smith is going crazy running the ball and we score 35 points in the second quarter and we're doing whatever we want to do. "They had no idea how to stop us," Bostic continued. "Joe figured out how to block 'em, and they never had a chance. That's a Joe Gibbs adjustment in a nutshell."" |

If we had beaten the Raiders in Super Bowl 18, the Redskins probably would've been considered a dynasty over San Francisco. Did anybody notice how Jay Schroeder looked like a girl with his long blonde frizzy hair? lol |

Barry Wilburn man could he play...too bad his head just was never quite right. Neal Olkewicz, Monte Coleman, and Mel Kaufman - talk about a group of workhorses and of course those two unstoppable Defensive Ends with Butz and Grant stuffing the middle....ahhh memories... of course to paraphrase Rick Pitino..."those guys are not going to walk into Redskins Park next season." |
Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread
I just miss linebackers who could cover passes downfield. I guess they were free too back then, since we had a great pass rush with Mann and Manley.

There is a lot of plays like the reverse and the counter gap that is still widely successful in today's NFL. Which is why it still puzzles me that people would say things like "the game has passed Joe Gibbs by" or "his type of offense is dead and buried...outdated." Neither have turned out to be true in my opinion. In fact, they talk about the speed of the game being so much faster today...but honestly, the only thing I can tell that would make today's game faster is less time on the play clock, rather than players evolving. |
Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread
I was finally able to sit and watch the game on Tivo. Seeing Alvin Walton's ridiculus neckbrace that's obviously not preventing any neck injury, and remembering that a member of the Warpath uses Alvin Walton's Neckbrace as his screen name actually made me laugh out loud.
I also saw Dave Butz with the flesh colored forearm pads. I can remember using them back in the day. What ever happened to those? Does the forearm shiver no longer exist? |

You mean there are good players in the later rounds and whad'ya mean he messed up on 1st and 2nd rounders, give him a break, he rarely used them. |
Re: Broncos vs Redskins Superbowl XXII replay official game thread
I have always wondered what kind of a game Art Monk would have had if he had not been injured.

I remember Dan Dierdorff writing us off, doing his lameass coverage and I threw a couch pillow at the TV. Right after the pillow throw, things changed. I tried the pillow throw again from time to time when things got rough, but it never worked like it did that game :laughing- |
