I always wonder if the horse in these races just run because they are told to or they actually have some sense that their in a race.

I'd imagine the horse has some sort of clue what they are doing...

If this had been any other horse, it would have been shipped to the glue factory the day after the accident at Pimlico. I have to imagine part of the reason to keep the horse alive was to build up a stock of its semen to sell...

I think it really was a double edge sword for the owners: On one hand, contrary to what most are led to believe, they actually do care for the animal and his well being. But on the other hand, there is the business side of it.

I saw a show about the owners (60 minutes maybe?) and they were definitely very concerned over the well being of the horse first and foremost. Sure the business side plays a part but I think in this case it was pretty small.

I think horses are smarter than we give them credit for. All animals, in fact, are probably smarter than we give them credit for.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that couldn't care less about this horse. Sure, it sucks that it had to break its leg and (eventually) go before it's time but I just don't see why it became a national hero.

The way to know if they want to keep him alive because they loved the horse or becase for financial gain is how the dispose of the body. If they burie the horse it because they loved the horse if they sell for dog food than it was about the money.

I've been an avid equestrian since I was 5yrs old. I was really pulling for Barbaro to make it, but when I saw his leg after they took the cast off I was horrified at the way it was deformed. I have never known a horse to recover from anything like that... I knew it was only a matter of time before he was put down. I'm very sad for him, and his owners... I'm very sad he's been put through all of this, months of recovery, only to end up being put down. But as long as he was happy up until last night, then I guess it was worth it... :(

Give me a break! There is NO WAY the body is sold as dog food. When you love a horse it's just like loving a dog or cat. They are your family. You don't "dispose" of them like that!

Well there was a time when horse racing was the most popular sport in the country, perhaps the world. Think about it, the terms "dark horse" and "upset" both came from horse racing.

But I mean, I guess imagine that Federer broke his leg at Wimbledon and had to be euthanized because of it. Perhaps an extreme comparison, but still

Not many animals do exhibit self awareness but that doesn't mean they're any less important. Horses are actually pretty smart.

There's your answer. There are tons of dog and cat owners in this country (myself included) that would grieve just as hard (if not harder) at the loss of their pet than they would at the loss of a human acquaintence.

I'd grieve harder if I lost my dog than I would if any one of my coworkers died. God's honest truth. And I like some of my coworkers. [U]Some[/U], lol.

The value you place on life, in my opinion, depends upon your relationship with said life. Pet owners can relate to Barbaro's situation. Anyone who's ever had to put a dog or cat down due to illness can sympathize today. Pets provide absolute unconditional love. They greet you the same way every day, no matter what kind of day you've had or what kind of mood you're in. Putting a pet down is one of the most intense emotional experiences a person can possibly face. You can bet Barbaro's owners felt this way, regardless of the business side of things.

I'm going to steal a line from a comedy movie while attempting to be serious: yeah but it's [I]your[/I] dog! I was extremely sad when we had to put my dog to sleep last year but that's because he was my dog that I'd had since I was a kid. I wouldn't expect anyone else to shed a tear for him.

And I'm sure horses, dogs, dolphins, parrots, pigs, gorillas, etc, etc, etc are very smart and cute and important to the ecosystem and all that, but I still place more value (and value is relative to each person) on human beings than on animals.

Well if I saw your dog on TV in the Westminster Kennel Club's Dog Show and I saw him get hurt, kind of like I did when watching Barbaro in the Preakness, then I'd probably feel extremely bad for you and for your dog.

I can't shed a tear for your dog at all, because I never established a connection at all. But I definitely empathize with you having to put the dog down, because I've been through that. I know what it feels like to go through it, and it brings up old emotions.

When I heard of Barbaro dying, it wasn't so much that I was feeling sad for the horse (though I did a little bit because I saw him get hurt on TV). It was more that I felt sad because it reminded me of what it was like to lose my dog when I was 13. It brought back that experience very vividly, and consequently I can empathize with Barbaro's owners.

Barbaro won six straight races and was on his way to winning the triple crown. We haven't seen a horse run like him since Seattle Slew. There was a lot invested in him and people were excited about it. It takes decades to find a horse like that, with that much talent... it is a loss, no matter how you look at it - animal or not.

Just like your last post, I agree with you on this. I feel bad when I hear about strangers passing away mainly because I either empathize with their family's grief or I feel sorry that their life was cut short (which is how some people seem to be feeling about the horse).
Likewise, I feel bad when a [human] athlete gets injured his/her career is cut short because I know how hard they work and I know about all the emotions that are associated with sports. These athletes have goals and aspirations that can be cut short so quickly and it's sad to see when it does happen.
