If You Were President.
 

In the spirit of continued civil discussion, I thought this would be an interesting thread.

To the best of my knowledge, none of us here are qualified to hold the office of Chief Executive for any extended period of time. But perhaps for a day, a week, a or even a month, we could get something done.

What one or two things would you immediately "jump on" to change or laws you would enact? I almost want to make the only exception to this discussion, the war in Iraq. Simply because it's already being discussed ad nauseam.

Now think about the possible pros and cons, because everyone has great ideas when it comes to change, but in the context of politics and all eyes on you and only you, would you still make that same decision?

Not quite sure how, but I would eliminate money in politics.

Right now that's our number one problem... from media giants slipping their bias' into pop culture to finding money in refrigerators... we need real people making real decisions... not all this mumbo jumbo...

Secondly, I would make it so no-one could form a huge run-on paragraph where they constantly abuse the ...... It's obnoxious, and I do it non-stop.

I don't know, but I think I am qualified to be president. It's a management job though you are leading an entire nation. You put together a great team with experts on different subjects, have them advice you, and approve or disapprove proposals by your aids. The president just has to be a ethical and a critical thinker.

If I were president for a day I'd kill the abomination that is the Patriot Act and sign the Kyoto Treaty. And yes, I would make the decision every time.

I don't know what the problem is with the media giants putting their bias into pop culture. That's the basis of free speech and free press. My first order is business is going to be the coolest President for the day ever. I would sit out on the front lawn like total trash and drink Keystone Light.

THEN I'd go inside and make some decisions. Creating custom teams USA and a custom team called "The World" in Madden, I would title each player a different country. Each player that I defeated would then be sent a box of Wheaties provocatively suggesting, "Better eat up if you wanna' hang with the big boys." Canada would be the punter.

After my tenth Keystone, I'd probably want to see some strippers so I'd smack my wife on the ass and tell her to make the call and to make me a sandwich while she was at it. If she refused, I'd remind her to call me Mr. President. The strippers should also refer to me as that as well.

Next, I would make some serious decisions about social security while soaked in Keystone and stripper sweat. Social security gets privatized while I'm in office and that translates to a lot of Keystone and strippers later in life.

Last thing I do before I leave my day as President is to rob the place blind and smack a Secret Service agent in the face because I could.

sane energy policy. (corn subsidies, nuclear, more research into oceanic sources, more transmission bandwidth, etc) no bills that allow invasion of privacy without some kind of watchdog group to check for abuse. more emphasis and education on preventive care (which save TONS of money in the long run). a revue of tax codes (more simplicity could save lots of money on oversite and compliance). etc etc

The whole world would like me. Plus, you can't tell people what to do when you yourself aren't doing it (i.e NPT). You have to stick your neck out for the greater good sometimes and set an example. Yes they would because it would put most of the cost on us and let other nations have a free ride. That why two of our Presdents have not signed this Treaty. We already do stuff here to help with greehouse gases and the article said that over 250 corps. are involved in this program. What cost is this to China? I have no probleme if we agreed to a treaty that treats all Nations the same.

Not to get too nerdy, but if you wanted to sign a treaty, you'd have to get approval of the Senate. In the case of the Kyoto Protocol, I think the Senate rejected it by a vote of something like 99-0 (with 1 abstention).

i'm not a racist by any means. if you asked 10 people from various countries, 9 of 10 would say they hate america. but poll those same ten people and ask which country they would rather live in they would all say america. i understand that some do like america, but most don't.

maybe if they would try to fix their own damn countries, then their countries wouldn't be such shit holes. quit spending all of your time hating america and start fixing your own damn countries.

I have no beef with illegal immigrants. I would sneak into the country too if I was living in Nicaragua and I'm sure you would too if you couldn't feed your family. BTW, the people who hate America are not these illegals, they overwhelmingly love the United States. In fact, a lot of illegals love and appreciate the country more than a lot of privileged suburban college kids who already have U.S. citizenship.

If I were President, first off I'd....

1) Change the National Anthem to Just a Gigolo (David Lee Roth style)
2) Make Redskin History a Standard Of Learning

then I'd do some real work and I'd.....

1) Eliminate federal tax for people making less than $25k/year and make those making up to 75k/year pay a flat rate (15%) and those making more than that pay a flat rate of 25% up to a maximum amount.
2) Make Welfare a temporary 12 to 24 month program.
3) Work on the legal industry's handling of frivolous lawsuits.
4) Increase funding for public education and provide an increase amount of attention on skill-type jobs. I really like the idea of doing away with 11th and 12th grade for anyone not interested in college but would rather learn a trade like electrician or plumbing.
5) Legalize everyone living in the United states effective immediately. This means you have to register to vote and register for Social Security. After about a 6 month period if you are in the country illegally you will be immediately deported back. the cost to send you back will come out of your pocket or you will work in some sort of government programs to payback the cost. During that time you can choose to undergo a legalization process (learning basic laws, language training, etc) in order to become a citizen.

And finally, I'd.....

1) Deport ArtMonkDrillz somewhere, anywhere.

I actually don't mind one bit that there are 12M immigrants here. I am the son of immigrants and everyone here is a descendants of immigrants. To be honest, I think immigrants do a lot of good for this country - they keep it from being stagnant by infusing it with new ideas, a solid work ethic, etc.

If I were Prez for a day I would do something to stop people from living off of the system, and try to help out the guy who is trying to make an honest living. It is unfair to see people who are on welfare have better lives because they are playing the system, and here I am trying to play by the rules and I get the short end of the stick. I work a full time job and my wife works about 30hrs/wk and we have 3 kids and we are just getting by, barely. Then I see people that are on welfare that use food stamps (Access card in PA) and load there grocery carts up with junk food and what not. Meanwhile I am just trying to buy the nessacary food for my family.

I have nothing against welfare, it is a good program if it is not abused. I will even admit that I had to be on it for a short while. But I did not do my best to stay on it. I wanted off of it ASAP!!! Maybe it is because I have too much pride but I was kinda embarassed to be on it, and now I see people all the time do just enough so that they dont loose it...

All I am saying is that the system needs to help the people that are willing to better themselves and society not the lazy, worthless, drug addicted, burden to our society type people...

unfortunately with #6, you'll have a hell of a time proving where the terrorists came from and that said country was in any way involved in the plot, and for #7, the people that'd have to approve those limits are the very people that'd be hurt by them, so i don't really think it'd ever be passable :/.

I like your idea about the 11 and 12th grades but I think dumping more money into the goverment schools is not going to help. I think its time we have alternative choices than goverment schools. I know I had the choice to send my daughter to private with allot of sacrifice but there are many who do not have the choice but to send there kids to failing public schools. If money was the problem then why can private schools cost less than what our goverment spends per child? If anything they could send the money back to the states and let each state decide what is best for their people.

One of the biggest problems I see, is that the people who [I]really[/I] matter are appointed (i.e.: the Presidential Cabinet and Justices). Justices would serve for probably 10 years (single term limit).

2. Shift power from the federal gov't to the states -- almost all of it. Like it was originally intended.

3. Respect the Constitution. Make the language less ambiguous.

4. Create a "people's army" which is not controlled by the federal gov't, but rather an assembly of state controlled militias. This army would serve to keep the federal gov't in check. If the federal gov't ever abused its power, it would have to answer to the people's army.

I like all of your ideas but the The presidents cabnet is kind of elected because we vote for a president and their ideas which will trickle down to who he appoints. If we elected them and we had a Rep. President an Dem cabnet he or she would never get anything accomplished and he or she would have a hard time even trusting his cabnet. I like some type of term limit on the Sup. Court but they too could not run for election because then special interest would push to have judges elected which would have their agenda. That happens some now but would be much worse if they had to run. The theory of not having term limits for them is to keep them from having an agenda and I don't think that is as true today as it was. I like the idea of turning the power back to the states.

I like your ideas...the only problem with #5 is how do we determine the ones that were already here from the ones that will trample the border trying to get in on that idea...I'm also not sure that internment camps are a good idea haha
