Do People Really watch The Academy Awards
 

Ok I'll admitt I watched a few minutes of some of the people walking down the red carpet as they entered the building but stopped as I started to BARF. Who really cares about these people? They act as if they think their gods gift to earth and look down upon the people who worship them. They must have low esteem because they have a different award show about every week so they can tell themself how great they are. And what about the poverotsee (spelling) who snoop around all the time noosing into there business like a peeping tom. I think their just as bad if not worse than them. I just don't get how people floock to see these people and they coud not give a rats ass about their fans. I know they thank their fans but what they are really saying is "thank you to all those low lifes who went to see my great movie and voted for me, and thank you for the millions of dollars I've made off you but would never have anything in common with you common folks. Buy now and get the hell out of my way". OK, thats my rant for today.

i never watch them... find them boring. i thought the departed was better the first time around when it was called reservoir dogs.

I don't watch but I do know that a lot of people who watch it. The show itself boring but I like hearing/reading about the movies and actors that won. This way I can make an informed decision about what movies to rent (Netflix). Of course, movies that win aren't necessarily good movies.

I was disappointed with the Last King of Scotland. To be honest, I thought the doctor was the main character of the movie and not Idi Amin. Forest Whitaker did a great job but they didn't show case him enough IMO.

I'll have to checkout The Departed. Also, Babel was a good movie but it definitely was a clone of Crash.

it always seems like the winners have either been around forever( like they are deserved an award) or the movie that wins, either sucks to high heaven, or i have never even heard of it. but i did like the departed. even though i don't think much of DiCaprio, he did a helluva job in that movie

I mean i i guess i can see where you're coming from with that one, the similarities between the ending and the overall scheme of a cop infilitrating the a gang, but then again thats a scheme in many movies... all in all they are different movies just from the way they are told, the plot, and the devolopment of charectors.

The key question is whether anyone has ever seen any of the movies they actually give these silly awards to. I'd say by and large, my answer is "No" and when I have seen awarded movies in the past, its usually a regrettable experience.

The only reason to care about the academy awards last night is to see if the ground game attack of Cars would run rapshod over the poor run defense by the penguins of Happy Feet. But of course, the Cars coach kept calling passes and lost the game.

Babel is a clone of Crash? Why isn't crash a clone of 21 grams, which came first? Or Amorres Peres which came before that? Alejandro Inarritu does that type of film making better than anyone.

Paul Haggis did not invent the epic ensemble piece. He just schmaltzed the formula up and made a bathetic little flick for morons who want to feel like they are more intelligent for asking themselves deep questions about race, when in fact they had become even dumber as a result of watching that facile movie, if that's possible.

Babel on the other hand is the real deal.

I'm not gonna lie. A big reason I watched it last night was to see Ellen. I think she's pretty damn funny. She's got that same dry, sarcastic humor a certain "The Artist Formerly Known As" has...plus we both like women!

Glad to see The Departed win.

Haha, let me be clear. I didnt like Crash.

The problem I had with it was this: it perpetuates the racial stereotypes it is purporting to deconstruct by featuring characters who embody these stereotypes. The black gangster, the middle eastern shop owner, the racist cop, etc. Identity is multifaceted and complex, and I don't think the film's wriring is able to adequately demonstrate that. At the end of the movie, the characters still harbor their prejudices about each other, have not grown, and have learned nothing new; but more importantly, the audience has learned nothing new about their respective ethnic groups, other than that their preconceived prejudices were in fact correct.

Crash on the other hand is a film that features characters which, although from disparate ethnic and economic backgrounds, are complex and 3-dimensional. Even though these characters appear to embody the same type of stereotypes as Crash's characters - the Japanese schoolgirl, the immigrant maid, the arab peasant farmer, and the loud, culturally insensitive American tourist - all the characters, and particularily the female characters, are so compelling because of the ways in which they individuate from such cultural stereotypes. They are flawed, and sympathetic, and ultimately moving in a way that Crash's are not.

I thought all the movies nominated SUCKED. The Departed being the biggest of SUCK. Ole Marty boy hasn't made a good film since Goodfellas. I never watch the awards. To make art into a competition denegrates the very intent of the artists. There is a huge sucking sound emanating from the west. Its called Hollywood. I should know. I live here.

I think the point PFunk was making is that there is no right or wrong.

I mean Gmanc was moved by Uncle Jesse's haunting portrayal of a grieving relative remembering Papouli against the comparatively serene backdrop of a boat on cinderblocks, while I felt the chilling naivete of the well-meaning Michelle as she "cleansed" Martin the Goldfish with a bubble bath captured the deus ex machina that is the j ai no se quas of Full House.

Fair enough but that's why you debate it. It's fun, and sometimes you realize you were wrong and that a movie, or music CD, or athlete, or whatever is better than you gave it or them credit for. And sometimes you convince another person the same.　　Ａｎｄ　ｍｏｓｔ　ｏｆ　ｔｈｅ　ｔｉｍｅ　ｙｏｕ　ｊｕｓｔ　ａｇｒｅｅ　ｔｏ　ｄｉｓａｇｒｅｅ． Isn't that what we do on this site? Argue, about stuff which there is ultimately no right or wrong answer to?

Obviously there exists differing opinions on Crash, just like there exists differing opinions on the long term viability of Carlos Rogers. I've got opinions on both, and this is one of the places I come to express them. What's the problem with that?

Fair enough, saying a movie is for morons just comes off as kinda harsh, and I find movie arguement to be a tough battle to fight, I've had many and never come out much better then they started so I usually just pass, and be happy with the movies I like although I have been enlightened a time or 12

I used to hate his guts but ever since Gangs of New york, he's played more gritty roles.

I only watch a small part of the awards if a certain person is being honored and if a certain actor, actress, or movie I like is up for an award.

Crash is a very polarizing movie... either hate it or love it.

Much like Napoleon Dynamite- I'm glad some people thought it was the funniest movie ever, but I'm still waiting to laugh.

As for the Oscars... they've always been a joke- political dancing for the sake of Hollywood elitism. But out of the nominees, I'm glad Departed won. Glad Scorsese got his... It's kind of unfair to compare his past work- Departed wasn't going against Raging Bull or Goodfellas... it was up against the likes of "The Queen", "Babel" and "LMS". I'm thinking the academy saw the kind of backlash it created when it gave BP to "Crash" last year and I think they went in a different direction with the choice this year.

The biggest travesty was giving Best Cinematography to "Pan's Labyrinth." While PL was a fine film, "Children of Men" did some stuff with the camera that absolutely blew me away.

I have not been to the movies in a few years as I will not suport these snooty people with my money. It works out fine because it gives my wife a chance to do something with my daughter (she is 21 and from another marrage and lives with us)or a friend and gives me some free time. Well it did give me some free time because now we have a two month old and I guess I'll be home watching her.
