An Inconvenient Truth
I support Al Gore's Eco-Friendly politics, but I saw a pretty funny story on CNN. CNN reported that Al Gore spent over $30,000 on his electric bill last year, averaging about $2,500 per month. It's reminiscient of Dick Gephardt bashing Bush for not pushing for tighter emissions requirements in new cars, even though he himself drove an SUV (until the Washington Post ran a story). I love how full of it politicians are.

Sick. I cant say much more than has already been said. Al Gore is a no-character, robotic, hypocritical talking head. When I think about how much of a retard I think Bush is, it makes me smile because I'd rather him than Al Gore. I mean, come....he invented the internet. WTF.

Let me get this straight, you think global warming is a big hoax but not all of it? That's a good brain teaser right there. |
Re: An Inconvenient Truth
Totally!
“As the spokesman of choice for the global warming movement, Al Gore has to be willing to walk (the) walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use,” The Gore’s 10,000 square foot house on Lynnwood Boulevard doesn’t have a small one. |
Re: An Inconvenient Truth
if you would have watched the entire story, Al gore is having solar panels installed right now. and there is no way that i would take george bush over anyone

Re: An Inconvenient Truth
I don't like Al Gore too much and I am not too confident about the truthfullness behind the whole global climate crisis discussion but if he is having solar panels installed then that should be as big a story as his energy use. I think it is wholly unfair for the media to make headlines that clearly are meant as indictments when there are major parts of the story that change the whole context. It happens all the time with all kinds of politicians(and everyone else too) and I am tired of it. There's plenty to complain about most people, including Al Gore, without some manufactured story about his energy use.

Re: An Inconvenient Truth
Media and fairness do not go together. they are about drama, shock........sadly, not truth

I dunno, it's pretty bad when a politicians has been screaming for the past 3 years about people needing to reduce their "carbon footprint" and how, if we don't reduce our energy consumption, we are going to detroy the earth, and lo and behold, he's got an energy bill that is as expensive as a BMW convertible coupe. It's pretty hard to take that out of context. It's just as funny as a story about a Christian Conservative preacher trying to score some crystal meth and having sex with a male prostitute. But, I didn't mean to have a really deep conversation, I just thought the story was funny. |
Re: An Inconvenient Truth
The "offsetting your carbon footprint" is a tremendous scam. Basically, it says to donate to eco-friendly groups if you use too much energy (by the groups' standards!) and you'll be OK. It reminds me of an old Dennis Miller joke:
"I saw an ad in a magazine - 'Learn to avoid rip-offs! Send $5 to...'" |

Re: An Inconvenient Truth
Ohhhh, so he's installing solar panels on his 8-bedroom, 20-room home? How efficient!
I wonder if he'll put solar panels on the private jets he flies in to lecture us about using the wrong kind of lightbulbs? I have no problem with him having a huge house...good for him that he can provide his family with it...but when he lectures me about driving a gasoline car and then jumps on a jet that will burn more fuel in one trip than I will in a whole year and goes back to a house that has a higher electric bill than I have a mortgage...I can't take him seriously. In fact, I call that not only being a hypicrite but a liar also. |

what manufactured story? Its in black and white, plain as day. Hes been on this 'global warming' stuff for a while now. And he's just now getting solar,.........hmm. Oh, and the private linear jets he flys on to go speak about how everyone else needs to do this and that, use ALOT more fuel than commercial aircraft. Anyway, enough about that bozo. |
Re: An Inconvenient Truth
You know how we have all these experts telling us about global warming? one group says its this bad, another says its that bad, theres no universal theory. And then you have other experts barking about a big hole in the ozone. Again, lots of different theorys on the hole. Skinemall's theory is this simple: ok, so if we have global warming, we all know heat rises. And if we have a hole in the ozone...... wouldnt the heat just go out thru the hole? ;)

I don't get how you say they manufactured a story about his energy use. They reported the facts and also included what he was doing to help with energy use. I thought it was well writen and gave the facts and did not add opinion so we could determine how we felt about him. It did leave out the other three houses he owns and the private jet he flies around on. He uses more energy in a year than most will in 10 to 20 years but he condones us for that. |

Re: An Inconvenient Truth
Maybe we should not attack Gore because he did invent the Internet and without it we would not have this site!
|
Re: An Inconvenient Truth
Why do people keep harping on the whole "I invented the internet" thing? He didn't say such a thing. People need to get their facts straight instead of listening to the republican spin machine.

Re: An Inconvenient Truth
Oh excuse me, he didn't invent the internet, he created it:
From YOUR cited source statement: Gore: ... "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet[.]" Maybe he meant to that one of his initiatives helped create the possibility of the internet or maybe this or maybe that. Maybe he just mispoke - Of course, Democrats would NEVER harp on a gaffe made by the opposing party member. He said what he said and he's stuck with it forever. (create v. invent - wow that's HUGE leap). |
Re: An Inconvenient Truth
Either way he still intimated that his efforts made the internet what it is today which is ridiculous. The success of the internet and its penetration into society cannot be traced to one single person or thing. In fact probably many of the little things that helped it along could have never happened and it would be exactly the same anyways.

Re: An Inconvenient Truth
The difference between create and invent is not a mere matter of semantics. There is a real difference and it's kind of sad that people don't know the difference.
Definition of Invent:
To produce or contrive (something previously unknown) by the use of ingenuity or imagination.
Definition of Create:
1. To cause to exist; bring into being. 2. To give rise to; produce: That remark created a stir. 4. To produce through artistic or imaginative effort: create a poem; create a role.
I can claim that I created a car which obviously isn't the same as claiming to have invented a car. As with everything else in life you have to know something about the context of the discussion. Gore's congressional record and his support for DARPA shows that he had a hand in the creation of the internet by providing research funds and a substantial one at that ($1.7 billion). |

And it's not like the money he gave was out of his own pocket. |

I guess if he is claiming that the mons-ey spent by the goverment invented the internet than we all did as tax payers. I Bryan invented the internet along with Gore.
|
Re: An Inconvenient Truth
Just because one supports something or just because someone helped get money appropriated doesn't mean he or she invented or created it. They simply helped the person or persons who did the creating. Trying to argue the semantics or created versus invented is dumb. He took credit as one who was responsible for the actual existence of the internet in a physical way which is just not true in any way. The internet existed before Al Gore was even in congress. The internet's transition into a mainstream communiction tool was helped by monies from congress of which Gore supported, even spearheaded. But that's not what he intimated when he said "created". It just isn't.

Re: An Inconvenient Truth
FRPLg Congress may have helped speed up the development of the internet but with what it has provided to the business world is what really developed the net to what it is today. If there was no pontential for advertising and the other uses for business it would be nothing of what it is today.

No I agree. The thought that something like the internet is the product of a series of events each of which was absoulutely necessary is ridiculous. I am pretty sure the internet is no better or worse off because of Al Gore or any politician for that matter. |
Re: An Inconvenient Truth
I certainly believe in Global Warming. Did anyone say they didn't?
I didn't read anyone here say the didn't believe in it. Anyways there is a not so insignificant portion of people and scientists who don't just question the human cause theory of global warming but the idea of global warming in general. I find it scary that something that seems so important is treated in such a political way when it needs to be treated in a scientific way first and foremost. |
Re: An Inconvenient Truth
Anyways there is a not so insignificant portion of people and scientists who don't just question the human cause theory of global warming but the idea of global warming in general.
My understanding is that almost all scientists agree that: (a) greenhouse emissions are making the ozone hole bigger; (b) the increased size of the ozone is bad; and (c) the climate is getting hotter, at least in part due to man. I haven't heard nayone debate (a) and (b) and only a few people debate (c). The debate now seems to center on whether such changes are as bad as people think they are. I don't know how bad of a situation we are in because I'm not a scientist. Consequently, I'll simply defer to the overwhelming majority of scientists who do believe (perhaps incorrectly) that we are screwing things up in a big way. As for politics getting in the way of this debate, I think both sides do it. The Dems and Left viciously attack anyone who questions whether global warming is taking place and how much harm it is creating. The Bush Administration tries to suppress any statements/studies that don't suit their political agenda. |
Re: An Inconvenient Truth
This discussion isn't going anywhere but lets be clear on one thing, creating and inventing are not the same. To perpetuate the idea that they are the same is a Definist fallacy and disingenuous.
A number of senators have taken initiatives in creating things over the years. Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska took initiative in creating The Bridge to Nowhere but that doesn't mean that he invented the concept of a bridge or built it himself.
They simply helped the person or persons who did the creating.
So, if I help you create something by getting you the resources needed to do the work I can't claim on my resume that I took the initiative in creating the final product? Shouldn't I be entitled to some credit? What are the standards for getting recognition for my contribution? As for the internet, let's not confuse it with the world wide web. I'm not going to give a history lesson on the internet, you will have to do your own research on that subject. I'll just say this, the internet is a collection of internets (a network of networks), there are many world wide web (the French have their own sites). No single person can claim to have invented the internet as it was build by standing on the shoulders of giants. In fact, no single group can claim to have invented it without giving credit to someone else or some other group. Lastly, Al Gore is not claiming to have invented the internet. |
