Tell me about Derrick Dockery - new Buffalo Bill

Can anyone tell me about offensive guard Derrick Dockery that the Buffalo Bills just paid $49 million over seven years? In the Buffalo media they claim this guy is a stud, that Dockery was a large part of the Redskins rushing success last season. Is this guy really a stud? Is he overrated? Is he the superb run blocker that he is billed to be in the Buffalo press? Would you have preferred that he resigned with the Redskins?

Dock is a good player...I wanted the skins to keep him. But the Bills gave him Steve Hutchinson money and he is not even close to that good.

Re: Tell me about Derrick Dockery - new Buffalo Bill

Not a stud, but a solid part of a stud line. Being the youngest on our old line he probably has his best to come. Would love to have kept him but not for the price the Bills paid!

great run blocker, decent pass blocker. prone to the mental mistake. very big and strong and hard to move. a good guard but not an elite guard for 49 million IMO.

Re: Tell me about Derrick Dockery - new Buffalo Bill

Quest:

Since you asked...

Dockery is overpaid given the contract he just signed.

He was in the league for 3 years as a soft/fat guy in the middle of the offensive line. Last year he lost 50 lbs of fat and added 20 lbs of muscle and played very well. QUESTION: Did he do that because he finally "saw the light" or did he do that only because it was his contract year and he wanted to get paid? Sorry, I don't read minds... You can make that call after you see him play next season.

He is better at straight ahead blocking than pulling. He is better pulling to his side of the line instead of the other side of the line because he does not run all that fast.

He is durable; he has no history of injuries. He has no reputation as a malcontent or a problem in the locker room.

Summary: A good solid player who is young and might have a lot of improvement left in him - - assuming he does not come down with a case of "fat wallet syndrome". But I doubt he'll serve out this entire contract in Buffalo without several restructurings because he's not worth this kind of cap number.

Re: Tell me about Derrick Dockery - new Buffalo Bill

He will single handedly lead you to the Promised Land. The Promised Land being a new restaurant near Orchard Park. Ha Ha. I amuse myself. He played overweight his whole time here except for last year when he was auditioning to leave. If they can keep his weight down and he doesn't just say "I'm rich, biatch" and laze it up, he could be average. In fairness, he is a bulldozer at straight ahead run blocking. As good as anyone else last year.

For more see the other Dockery post.

Re: Tell me about Derrick Dockery - new Buffalo Bill

Now, these are my views and my views only but I am completely serious.

Dock was an all-american at Texas and a very shrewd (for us) third round pick.

At the end of last year, he was probably the 5th most talented lineman on the Redskins. He was the second best guard.

His career started a little shaky under Spurrier and even under Gibbs he had a tendency to get flagged for false starts. He really started to turn the corner in '05. It seemed that he started to play his size. In '06 he worked hard in the offseason and he blossomed even more.

If he continues to work hard, he definitely has the gifts to be a very good lineman for many years. He definitely has upside.

Where I would worry.... I can remember several occasions in goal line packages where they ran behind him and could not get in. It was very surprising because you would think at his size, a goal line play would be automatic.

However, when he is pulling, get out of the way.

Re: Tell me about Derrick Dockery - new Buffalo Bill

That's what I was afraid of when I saw Steve Hutchinson money being thrown at this guy. The Bills just signed one of their own free agents, DE Chris Kelsay to a ridiculouosly generous contract. Kelsey will make $5.4 mil per season. He plays on the right side and shares snaps with another DE. Our Pro Bowler Aaron Schobel signed a contract last year paying him $3.8 mil and he carries these other guys. He had 15 sacks last year, Kelsay had 5.5.

I guess we'll find out if Dockery's worth it. The Bills line was horrible last year so anything should be an improvement.

Re: Tell me about Derrick Dockery - new Buffalo Bill

he's got potential, but he's well overpaid and he was the worst starting lineman we had...

I never really liked him, but hes very big and strong... just alot of false starts and questionable technique...

I don't know who you guys had that he's replacing... he may be worth being excited about...

we just overpaid for london fletcher, too... I just hope he produces and helps our struggling run D and lets other people play their positions more...

You never know. This contract may represent where the market is. The cap is way up, so teams have money to blow and that may have driven up the price. I don't think you'll have any reason to hate him. I just wouldn't be expecting perennial pro-bowls. He doesn't attract attention much - good or bad.

we really didnt the market has gone crazy if you look at all the other signings they are crazy dock got 18 mill in guarantees nate c got 22 mill so compared to that fletch got a pretty reasonable deal

I just say that cause 5 mil/yr for 5 years when youre 31 is alot.. is he going to be worth 5 mil in 2 years? we set ourselves up to eat dead cap alot...

he is scheduled to make 12.5 mill of that in the next 2 years

I wonder if the Bills are replacing Gandy... I'd consider picking him up. I bet he'd come cheap and probably fit in our system a little better...

I'm pretty much going to echo what others had to say about Dock. He's a good guy, an above-average guard, and you will like him. I read the Bills' press release and, contrary to its claims, he's not the best in pass protection, but he's a good road-grader. He doesn't have as much power as you would expect for a guy his size (he could be bullied by MLBs he was supposed to block on occasion), but he's still pretty powerful.

I don't think he's worth close to what you guys paid, but maybe I'm thinking in terms of 2006 cap dollars. The market is all screwy right now, so it's hard to assess whether you got him at a number above market-price, or way above market-price. Best of luck next season.

he was awfully lazy until his contract year. he was NO BETTER than our 3rd best offensive linemen last year, and that's an insane contract for his production.

I would have liked to keep him for continuity, but i don't think he's irreplaceable by any means. He's no where close to hutchinson.

In all fairness, scouts said that he would be a project when we drafted him. Most thought that he had the potential to be dominant but would take several years to develop. Maybe they were right and, with Buges' guidance, he's just now hitting his stride.

that's an awfully big risk to bet 49$mill on.

I was hoping to keep Dock around, but HELL NO at those prices. Joe Gibbs is building a championship team here and I think people like Doc don't understand things like that. Unfortunately for him he's headed to Buffalo.

I agree. He got awfully serious last year all of the sudden. If he had taken that approach the previous two seasons he might be worth the money they paid him.

Also, I agree that he is the 3rd best lineman. People are saying he's the worst of the 5 but I would rank them like this (just on 2006):

1. Samuels
2. Thomas
3. Dockery
4. Jansen
5. Rabach

I'm eager to see more from Wade.

I would be interested to see how you all rate them.

wade is a FA, no guarantee he'll be back (unless i missed something recent). he's an NFL starter we were lucky to get last year.

I will give it to you straight He weighs 340 but plays like he's 240, one other problem he can't block in space unless your actually dumb enough to run into him. What you signed is a player with the physical measurables you look for in a guard but he plays like a statue, you gave a big contract to nothing more than a big lineman, watch him closely when he plays you will be shaking your head at this contract after one year.

Re: Tell me about Derrick Dockery - new Buffalo Bill

I wanted Dock back as well but not for that kind of money. I will tell you he always seems to hustle and I can remember several times where he has pounced on a loose ball 10-15 yards down the field to save a drive. I think you will like him as much as we liked him here and he is a good player.

Dockery is a good, solid starter in this league. But there's no way in hell he deserved a deal that big, no way. The more I think about the deal he got, the more it amazes me.

Good point on your ranking. I think most people here put Jansen above Dockery because they instinctively believe Jansen is a Grade A offensive linemen. In reality, his performance has slipped quite a bit over the past two years.

Dirtbag59 03-03-2007 01:03 PM

Re: Tell me about Derrick Dockery - new Buffalo Bill

The truth is Dockery needs Coach Bugel to continue his development. I predict his technique will suffer next year but his intensity will increase due to his desire to prove himself worthy of his contract. Then after that he'll probably regres.

I still put jansen over Dock... I put Jansen over Samuels... The whole left side of our line is the weakest and Thomas and Jansen get all the flack while Dock gets 7 mil/yr and Samuels goes to the pro bowl???

WTF???

MTK 03-05-2007 02:19 PM

Re: Tell me about Derrick Dockery - new Buffalo Bill

Jansen is easily a better lineman than Dockery.

Here's how Scouts Inc. ranks our offensive line:

Samuels 85 (outstanding player)
Jansen 77 (solid starter)
Thomas 74 (good starter)
Rabach 72 (good starter)

And Dockery ranks 65 (adequate starter)

SmootSmack 03-05-2007 02:23 PM

Re: Tell me about Derrick Dockery - new Buffalo Bill

I think really the only advantage that Dock has over Jansen is potential upside at this point in their respective careers.

On a somewhat unrelated note, with all these moves the Bills made how is Ralph Wilson's argument about revenue sharing and the haves (Snyder) messing with the have-nots (Wilson) coming along?
