Snyder sighted at Calvin Johnson Pro Day!!!

NFL Network just reported Snyder being seen at Johnson's pro day. Could this mean we're thinking of drafting up? Why would Snyder be there, and what about our defense? It's so uncommon for Snyder to attend a pro day. Maybe the Skins think a kick ass offense will keep the ship afloat?

Re: Snyder sighted at Calvin Johnson Pro Day!!!

I think it would be REALLY hard for us to trade up since we don't have any draft picks.

Re: Snyder sighted at Calvin Johnson Pro Day!!!

This new and improved rumor makes 99% no sense just because we don't have the ammo. I will say that this guy probably should go #1 overall. He is the definition of can't miss prospect. I think the Redskins are doing a great job of confusing the entire top 15 in the draft of what we might do and I like it. It seems that the whole decision making contingent from our team was there today.

Maybe the Browns will take Archuleta, Lloyd, and a disappointment to be named later.

Re: Snyder sighted at Calvin Johnson Pro Day!!!

Trade Up???? That makes no sense.
I'm sure even Danny boy understands we need D help, and it appears to me we can take care of our few needs in the draft. Our offense is in fine shape. Strong D can compensate for fair to middlin offense.

Re: Snyder sighted at Calvin Johnson Pro Day!!!

Here's one thing I firmly believe, If the Skins thought that Johnson would help the team get into the playoffs in 07' they'd bet the farm. (That includes next years draft picks.) The defense wouldn't get consideration until next year. I don't agree with the thinking, but its certainly not an out of reach theory.

im sure its standard procedure to check out all the top prospects when u have the #6 pick...you have to put these guys somewhere on your board, it doesnt mean we are getting him relax

Re: Snyder sighted at Calvin Johnson Pro Day!!!

There is no way we trade up in this draft!! Believing otherwise is ubsurd. It is common practice for a team with a top 10 pick to interview/scout all players in the top 10/15. We're over a month away from the draft and we will see players stock rise and fall, it's just the intelligent thing to do. We're playing poker with all the other teams as far as draft intentions, trust me I've been to the last 3 NFL drafts. The Danny is just trying to get out of town for a breather after the nanny fiasco. C'mon people get a grip!

If I had a private jet to jump on whenever I wanted to, I would go watch Calvin Johnson work out. The dude's a freak. But we have nothing to trade up with. All reports have been and will probably continue to be we're trading down for MORE picks, not up for less. We're so draft depleted as it is...

Check it out.
Mike Shanahan has been rumored to have offered to swap 1st round picks with the Redskins, plus give them possibly 2 more first day picks AND a conditional late rounder for 08, PLUS Dre Bly. (I've even heard it without mention of Shawn Springs being involved.)

True? Who knows, but certainly enough rumor mentioning all of the above. Where there's smoke, there's likely fire...

Now, Mike Shanahan clearly wants something in the top of round one.
Bly isn't happy, despite what his agent says. He didn't get any money, he's on a one year leash having to prove himself worthy of a payday again, and he's to the point in his career where one more year severely decreases his negotiation power.

Now we've got supposed cooling on the trade talks, Bly's agent is playing nice guy. ("You catch more flies with sugar" approach. He wants Bly to get the payday Snyder reportedly promised him. Nice commission, that. So he makes nice in hopes of making everyone relax and shake hands on the trade.)

So, you're the Redskins. You want this deal, I would assume, You'd be stupid to not want it. So why hasn't it been done? Odds are it's because Denver is nervous, probably think their boy goes before 6. Maybe they're considering a deal elsewhere. BUT, elsewhere they likely don't have the chip of Bly to throw in the pot. At this point you have to figure if the trade is going to be made, Shanahan is going to watch the first few picks on draft day and gage if and where he should try to move.

So what could Denver want? I'd say Calvin Johnson would make a nice replacement for Rod Smith, and a nice young stud receiver to bring along with Jay Cutler.

So, Snyder makes like he's interested and shows up at Johnson's workout.
Hmmm. Maybe Dan wants this guy? Who knows, I don't. And neither does Shanahan. Johnson is the type of player that could warrant a "best player on the board" selection regardless of need.

Dan gains possible leverage. Or not. It may cause Shanahan to tip his hand a little, or perhaps even attracts another potential trading partner for the Redskins.
All it costs him is a walk around a guy's workout.

Same as JaMarcus Russell. It casts doubt on what we're truly wanting to do. Buys us a little negotiating power.

Can we just please stop talking about Calvin Johnson being drafted by the Skins? We don't need any more receivers especially trying to trade up for one is absolutely ridiculous.

Re: Snyder sighted at Calvin Johnson Pro Day!!!

well its part of the nfl.. you try and bluff someone to thinking you are interested in someone they might want and the might give you the house for that pick to get the guy they want.. cant hurt.. it in no way means that the Skins are going after these guys at all, just throwing up a smokescreen and making other teams think and wonder who we really want.

SO I guess Snyder was the only one there? I mean if others were there it would mean they are planning on drafting him right? Danny must have been the only person from any of the teams there.

What a retarded rumor.

Yeah, we're drafting in the 6th spot. There's a lot of things that can happen before the draft, and there's a chance Calvin Johnson will be sitting there at 6. While I think the chance is very rare, stranger things have happened.

Exactly, we're more than fine at WR and pretty much any offensive position other than the line.

We NEED to stock up on defense. DE and DT and the secondary can never have enough insurance.

Outside of Moss I would hardly say we are fine at WR. We don't have a legit #2 Wr in the least bit. All we have is potential at WR. We need production at wr, not potential.

I really don't see the Bronocos going WR. They have a pretty good stockpile. I believe they're interested in Branch and supposedly very high on Carrikier.

freddyg12 03-16-2007 10:43 AM

Re: Snyder sighted at Calvin Johnson Pro Day!!!

If C. Johnson is there at #6 I think he'd be hard to pass up. From a roster standpoint, I really don't think it would be a bad move. He's worth taking a chance on. Unlike M. Westbrook all reports are that this kid is humble & has a very stable background w/supporting family. Kinda kid Gibbs would love to have. He could make our O. tremendous.

From a cap standpoint, if we drafted him we'd have tons of guaranteed $ in our O. & it would come back to bite us, even if we cut Loyd next year.

Yes, we need to upgrade the D-line, but if you're sold that CJ is going to be an impact wr, but not sold that the top D-linemen will be stars (not just starters), then it's logical to select Johnson as the best player available. JLC has said in Skins Insider that the team wasn't impressed w/Adams & Branch, but had a good 1st interview w/Anderson & likes Okoye a lot. It still comes down to which player you really believe will have great success in the nfl.

It wouldn't be too shocking if Johnson is available at #6. Think about it, Cleveland is the first team that seems to even be considering it. Tampa could be sold on Quinn, ARizona has depth at wr, and then there's us.

I ultimately don't see it happening due to our needs on D & our desire to trade down for more picks, but if he's there at #6 I would almost hate to leave him for somebody else.

ARE is a playmaker for us and can do the job if we give him the ball. I'll admit Lloyd needs some stick-um on his gloves, but we have 3 capable WRs in an offense heavily loaded on the RBs and TE play.

Re: Snyder sighted at Calvin Johnson Pro Day!!!

Well I'm ALL for trading down for more picks because I think the Skins have more pressing needs and using the value of the #6 pick by trading down is the smart way to go IMO. HOWEVER, I would have no problem if the took Calvin Johnson because I think next to Moss he would be insane. Teams would have to play back therefore opening up the run and short passing game. I think having him on the field makes the offenst better. If he dropped to 6 and the Skins traded down I wouldn't have a problem with it but I mean 6'5 and runs a 4.3 ????? WHOOO !!!!!

Daseal, See my previous post please. I think the only way you can say chances are "very rare" at this point is if Tampa is 100% set on drafting him. I could see Gruden wanting to take Quinn. I know they resigned Simms & Garcia, but if Gruden is enamored w/a player he'll take em regardless of need. If he's set on Johnson that's it, but if Tampa doesn't take him he would fall to us. I don't see anybody else except Cleveland taking him in picks 1-5.

Re: Snyder sighted at Calvin Johnson Pro Day!!!

Even if Calvin Johnson is available at #6 which I doubt, there's no way we draft him other than to trade him. Do you guys realize how much we have invested in WR's already? The Redskins are not going to invest heavy in another wide-out.

This team needs defense, in case you've forgotten already what you witnessed last season. There's no smoke screens, no bluff's, every GM in the league knows the Redskins need DEFENSE, and espically across the D-Line. If the Redskins do not respect that #6 position, some other team will gladly take it off their hands, and probaly coveting a player we should take at that position. We need to draft Alan Branch, Gaines Adams, and Jamal Anderson all in one swoop if that were possible. D-Lines are built one player at a time, and if we could get just one superior D-Line player a year for the next 2-3 yr's it would be a sound acomplishment.

We have been neglecting the D-Line fo a long, long time, always trying to build the most important part of the team through FA's. The D-Line is the franchise of your defense, and it's neglect is obvious on this team. Wide recievers, running backs take a back seat to quality D-Lineman that's why they should be cherished when the opportunity arises to get one. The quality one's are also very expensive when you try to aquire them through free agency.
