Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick
Granted the Redskins don't trade down and granted that the Redskins could still use some D-Line help I still think that this guy is worth taking a look at. Landry can cover and play the run. This would also give Taylor the chance to move to SS and allow him a little bit more freedom to...well kill people.

Strengths: Possesses good height, decent bulk and the frame to get bigger. Shows good fluidity and top-end speed. He consistently gets a quick break on the ball and diagnoses the run very quickly. He shows good toughness and strength in run support, especially for his size. He fills hard and shows adequate power at the point of attack. Sideline-to-sideline playmaker versus the run. He displays better-than-average range in zone coverage and he also can match up one-on-one versus slot receivers in the NFL. He is an instinctive playmaker with adequate-to-good ball skills. He has a good mental capacity and coaches rave about his ability to pick things up quickly. He is a good leader in the secondary and does a great job of getting everyone in position. He has tremendous experience as a four-year starter at the highest collegiate level. He also has been extremely versatile in LSU's secondary throughout his career. Weaknesses: Lacks ideal bulk. Until he gets bigger he will not be able to match up as easily in-the-box at the NFL level as he has in college. He will misjudge the ball in the air on occasion and he still can improve his recognition skills when playing in deep-middle zone coverage. Overall: Landry played in all 14 games (10 starts) as a true freshman in 2003 and recorded 80 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, two interceptions, four pass-breakups, and one blocked kick. He was knocked out of the Arkansas game (11/28) with a concussion. In 2004, Landry started all 12 games finishing the season with 92 total tackles, five tackles for loss, three sacks, four interceptions, six pass-breakups, and one forced fumble. He once again started every game (13) in 2005 registering 69 total tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack, three interceptions, and eight pass-breakups. In 2006 he started all 13 games, earning first team All-American and first team All-SEC honors (both media and coaches), after collecting 74 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, one blocked kick, and three interceptions. Over the past four seasons, Landry has seen time at free safety, strong safety, and cornerback. Landry is as close to the complete package as it gets for a safety prospect coming from the collegiate ranks. He projects as an immediate starter at free safety in the NFL; he can hold up in the box, in deep-middle zone coverage and one-on-one versus a slot receiver. In our opinion, Landry is the top safety in the 2007 class and he should come off the board in the first-half of the first round. |
Re: Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick
Having two safeties with a lot of talent does you no good when you have a defensive line with no talent.
I would not want Landry here with Sean Taylor already on the roster. No matter what our situation was, we would always have a bigger need than safety. To get Landry, we'd be best off trading Taylor. That's just not going to happen. |
Re: Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick
We should consider Landry if Carriker, Adams, Branch, Okoye, Anderson, and Johnson are already gone. Ooops. That's impossible.
|
Re: Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick
Only if we want our defense to suck again like last year. The most immediate impact fix to our defense will come from improved line play. It is the key to the rest of our scheme. I dont care if we could draft Ronnie Lott, I'd still want us to get a dlineman. As much as I love Taylor and think Landry will be good I still think safety is a pretty replaceable position in the league. Hell we get by with guys way less talented than either at the other spot. Given the choice between a average player on the dline and a great safety or an average safety and a good dlineman I think you have to go with the good lineman and average safety.

Re: Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick
DL is too high of a priority to ignore.
|
Re: Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick
going to be a good player, but the skins have to get someone that will get to the quarterback. then everyone in the back 7 will automatically look like a better player
DL is too high of a priority to ignore.
Ditto. If we were going to ignore need & draft on best player available, I still don't know if Landry is that good to justify the #6. If we went that route (best player) I would rather see Thomas or CJ, but both are unlikely to be on the board. I think Okoye is our man. |
Re: Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick
Even if we trade down and get more picks, I'd take another defensive lineman before addressing the secondary.
The way I see it, we need a D-tackle first, a D-end second, and maybe another cornerback after that. Either way, Landry won't be part of any scenario. |
Re: Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick
some of ya talk like ya really don't watch football or ya be listenin to them sport reporters to much. Draftin tha boi landry is not a bad move, if ya watch tha redskins last our d-line was hurt all season and that was tha reason we was sorry as shit but everyone is comin back healthy and tha d-line should be like it was two season ago. and we just got our lindbacker sittution straight out so Draftin tha boi landry gives two great safety for years to come, So come on please think about it man, if u really think about it in tha league its easy to find a d-line than a safety that can impact tha game.

Anyways, I like Landry but you don't waste a #6 pick on something that you don't need. We don't need another high priced safety. Like Dmek said, Improve the D-line and our secondary will look alot better. Hi Dmek! Hows it going? |

Guy seems like a real good player. But like G.Tripp said, our D-line is in real bad shape and that is where we need to upgrade the most. W-out a d-line we have no pass or run d. |

Re: Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick
How many times are we going to have to say it? This team needs HELP on the D-Line. Somehow we seem to have forgotten just how important a dominant front four really is, and we don't have anything that remotely resembles dominance. This is where our attention should be centered, it's much too important to ignore.

Re: Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick
I swear..you guys are starting to annoy me. You all are afraid to have your own opinion. It doesnt matter who we draft everyone is gonna piss and moan about it. Remember when we drafted ST everyone was bitchin that we didnt draft Winslow. Then when someone has their own opinion you all pick on stupid shit like his spelling. Grow some balls. Other people from other team sites stop by and see this crap and they are gonna start to think you all are a bunch of puppets. I think he is right our D-line was hurt last year but thats not our only problem we had with our defense. The defense was on the field more then the offense. For some reason everyone forgets that our offense sucked last year.

I think you need a good 3 month ban from here to help you get your head straight. |
Re: Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick
i disagree. for the last 6-7 games, our offense was rollin. our defense couldn't get a stop to save their life. i also disagree about the skins drafting anyone but a defensive linemen, but to each his own.I'm not here to belittle anyone( except for maybe Malcolm)

Porterhouse, Check out the thread about the Warpath mods being unfair and you will understand.
BTW, I was at Fedex for the draft in '04. I was among the Ten Thousand fans chanting TAYLOR, TAYLOR, TAYLOR, so don't think we all were bitching about that pick. |
