Theismann must be really slipping!

Did you see the article on ESPN.com where Theismann ranked the top five organizations in the NFL? For some reason he put the Cowboys at number 3, no wonder ESPN told him to take a hike from MNF!

Re: Theisman must be really slipping!

That is just so stupid. Right, the Cowboys, who haven't won a playoff game in what, 10 years, are better run than the Baltimore Ravens and the Colts who just won the superbowl?! I remember the year before last, sometime during our playoff run he wrote an article on ESPN saying how the one two punch of Patten and Moss would help us in the playoffs. Problem was, Patten hadn't been active since halfway through the season. How could you not know that? You should at least know the Redskins.

Why would the skins be in anybody's top 5? I dont think they are in anybody's top 20. Vegas has them at 40-1 to win it all this season.

Yeah, ESPN is pushing real hard to get Joey T out the door...
THEISMANN OFFERED JOB AS COLLEGE ANALYST: Joe Theismann, dropped as an analyst on Monday Night Football, says he's been offered a job doing college football for the ESPN/ABC networks.

''I've been an NFL guy since 1974, so for 33 years now that's been my life,” Theismann said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. ''Now you are faced with the prospect of that not being in your future. It would be like training to be a doctor or a lawyer and having them say, 'we would like you to change to another profession.' I need some time to think about it.”
Hey, I'll be in Vegas this weekend (leaving tomorrow). You can bet I will lay down $50 at 40-1 odds for my Skins!

Poor Joe, I feel for him. Kornheiser & Wilbon both had good things to say about him on pti yesterday. Joe runs his mouth at a fast rate, but he brought us some great times, one of the most underated 2 minute qb's of all time IMO.

I always liked Joe. And thanks for helping get us that beautiful RING!

Can't honestly blame him for bumpimg his old team outta the top 5 after last season can ya?

We'll just HAVE TO PROVE HIM WRONG, THAT'S ALL! :)

Joe was hyping the Arizona Cardinals to go far in the playoffs the last couple of years, looking bad every time.

Maybe he is slipping.

I don't know what that has to do with anything, I just thought I'd share.

Yeah, but they should know the Cards are cursed by Dan Dierdorff.

Buster:

The Cardinals last won a championship in 1948. Dan Dierdorf was not even a passing thought in his dear mother's mind in 1948. :)

Since 1948, the Cardinals have won 1 - as in ONE - playoff game.

I suspect their "curse" goes well beyond Dan Dierdorf. And I suspect that insufficiently talented players on the field has a whole lot to do with that history of futility. :Flush:

I met him when I was 6 years old. He was signing autographs at some store. Woodward and Lothrop's I think. I have a framed personalized autograph of him and Mark Moseley. Honestly at the time I really had no clue who he was. I just wanted to be cool like my older brother and his friends so I threw a tantrum until he agreed to take me along with him

I always liked Joe the player since Notre Dame.

I'm not that fond of him as an analyst. However, he could surely help FOX or CBS. I think he could fill Brian Baldinger's shoes.

Yeah, it seems like it's been the trendy thing to do to pick the Cards to succeed the past few years. Theismann is still a homer and a meathead. Love him as a player though.

I know the we're not a top five organization right now, too many front office blunders and inconsistency year to year, but my real qualm was Joey T putting the Cowboys at number three. Someone saying that about a team who hasn't won a playoff game in ten years makes me shake my head, and especially having it come from one of our greatest and most revered player's!

Yeah, I could see him leaving ESPN/ABC for CBS or FOX; lord knows FOX needs serious help with their broadcast teams.

I don't see him doing college games, unless he's contractually obligated to ESPN -- which could be the case.

sportscurmudgeon 03-29-2007 10:52 PM

Re: Theismann must be really slipping!

Beemnseven:

As I understand it, Theismann was the recipient of a real sweetheart deal from ESPN the last time they sat at the negotiating table. According to one report I read, Theismann was getting "over the air network money" (not what Madden or Aikman get but waay more than anyone on cable should hope to get). According to that report, the guy at ESPN who gave him that deal is now gone; that's the guy Danny Boy hired away from ESPN to help him run Six Flags. Isn't that just swell?

I also understand Theismann's deal has two more years on it.

So, Theismann can certainly walk away and ESPN would probably like to save the money because if Theismann walks he won't get paid. But that's not a likely thing for him to do unless one of the networks comes up with a bagload of cash to make that move "financially sensible".

Supposedly, Theismann has been "offered" the college anaylst slot alongside Brent Mussberger on ESPN/ABC games. He doesn't "have to" take that, but if he turns down ESPN's suggestion, he might get a much less attractive offer to consider - - like coverage of the Denny's Pro Bowling Tour on Sunday afternoons opposite NFL games on two of the over the air networks. At some point, he could lose his ability to say "no" and have to take what they give him as his assignment lest he violate some kind of "cooperation clause" in his sweetheart contract.

At the moment, my guess is that he will ultimately get the choice between college game analyst and talking head on one of the myriad ESPN analysis shows related to the NFL. I'm hoping for the studio job because those shows are easier to avoid than a major college football game where he and Brent "Contrived Exuberence" Mussberger could poison the well...

Beemnseven 03-29-2007 10:56 PM

Re: Theismann must be really slipping!

I guess it all depends on where Theismann's 'heart' is -- in the booth commenting on the games, or in the studio for pre and post-game.

With the bozos FOX has, you'd think they'd jump all over Theismann if he were to walk.
