Golston at DE?
With Okoye moving up the draft boards & word that the Skins like him, while not being so impressed w/Adams, I see Okoye being our likely pick if we stay at #6 or trade down a few spots. Mel Kiper now has Okoye ahead of Branch. So, if we take a DT I was thinking that Golston could compete for time at right DE, depending on who we pick up in later rounds & how they look in camp.
Anyone think he could fit in at DE? |
Re: Golston at DE?
I think he'll have his work cut out for him at DT. After only one season he did a really good job filling in for Sal.
Why would you think moving him to DE is a good idea? Also, what makes you so unimpressed with Gaines? |
Re: Golston at DE?
I'd rather keep him at DT personally
|
Re: Golston at DE?
Simply put, no.
|
Re: Golston at DE?
agree with the above posts, hes a DT, not a DE. maybe not even a DE in a 3-4

Suggesting Golston could play DE for us should be grounds for a ban? hahahahaha. |

Adams, but based on JLC's Skins insider, he has said that the coaches weren't that impressed with him. I would guess that a big part of that is his weight & strength (he didn't do the bench press at the combine, most figure it would've hurt his standing). He might be great in a couple years, but we can't afford to have 2 light DEs. Golston is 290 & is a quick DT, but did get manhandled at times. If we draft a solid DT to start & don't draft a DE, the right DE position may come down to the incumbents; Wynn, Daniels & Evans (if they're here) plus whatever undrafted rookies or late pick ups come to camp. Golston is a good if unspectacular pass rusher. My point is, it could easily still be a major hole to fill come august. I think Wynn can still play the run & Daniels is still solid all the way around when healthy, but hasn't been too healthy of late & they're both old. I see Evans as a camp cut unless we really can't get any rookies to step up. |

I have only been here a few months but seeing the page explode over the Briggs news was pretty crazy. Just making a joke! I'm very interested to see how the draft / Defensive line for the Skins pans out this year. Seems like it could go a number of directions. |
Re: Golston at DE?
Golston on the edge? HA!
Not nearly enough speed. Golston is quick with his hands, but he doesn't have the speed to get around the edge. Pretty iffy idea. He'd make a good 3rd DT in a rotation. Okoye and Griffin would make a good 1-2 punch. Golston could come in when those two need a breather, and coming in with fresh legs would allow the team to take advantage of his quickness inside. |
Re: Golston at DE?
I actually don't think it's such a horrible idea. Golston is a definite liability against the run, a liability that could be minimized by placing him on the outside. Moreover, it's not at all uncommon to move lighter DTs to DE. I don't know whether Golston would make the transition well, but it's definately not a crazy idea to move him to LDE.
|
Re: Golston at DE?
He would have to drop some weight and increase his speed/quickness along with developing some pass rushing moves.
Overall I don't think it would be playing to his strengths though. I'd rather see him go the opposite direction and bulk up a bit more to be more stout in the middle. |
Re: Golston at DE?
I don't like moving players around like this. I'd rather see us rotate DTs in and out to keep people fresh.
|
Re: Golston at DE?
I as well would prefer to leave him at what he is best at.
Maybe a....................corner???????????? |

hahahahaha.[/quote] 3 months. You get 2 weeks for laughing while discussing a ban. |
Re: Golston at DE?
If we draft a DT, I see no problem in Keeping golston as a DT. He can come in in certain situations like 5-3 or 5-2 goalline/short yardage. We can also plug him in there on passing downs as a rusher and in the process keep the other DT's fresh. Moving him to DE would be a last ditch effort if we absolutely have no one else to play the position (i.e. injuries).
|
Re: Golston at DE?
ultimately, let's hope that he doesn't have to play DE, that would mean we've got enough help there. We're gonna have to get somebody new to not only crack the roster but earn some pt, rookie of free agent.

Totally. He's quick If you can dodge a wrench............. |
Re: Golston at DE?
GW likes to rotate is lineman...Golston is an ideal 3rd DT in the rotation.
|
Re: Golston at DE?
This isn't HS football. People don't just go switching positions like you change your underwear. Goldston isn't going to DE. He showed flashes last year so I see no reason for him to move to DE. Someone close this thread down.

We have two players in the defensive line rotation who have on ocasion played both tackle & end in the person of Wynn and Evans. I'm not that much in favor of moving Golston to end, but I am in favor of doing something to improve a weak psss rush. |
Re: Golston at DE?
Sure we can move Golston to DE if you want a slower, heavier, Phillip Daniels playing there, oh and not to mention i'm sure Golston doesn't have great pass rushing skills either.
|
Re: Golston at DE?
This was a very random suggestion. How about we draft the best DE in the draft and go with that
|

this is a good post. i cant understand why people around here think it is that easy just to switch positions? we are talking about pros, right? |
Re: Golston at DE?
He's as good a fit at DE as he is at CB. Hell let's trade Campbell and put Golston at QB.
Bad idea. Don't confuse the two positions becuase they are so close together. They do vastly different things and require vastly different types of athletic skill. |

This is spot on. So many football 'experts', who are only 'experts' because they split time in HS. think that switching positions is normal. It is not. In the NFL it takes a certain set of skills and a certain body type to play each position. Simply being a good athlete is not good enough. THEY ARE ALL GOOD ATHLETES. A guy who can play DT in HS can probably play just as well at DE in HS. A guy who can play DT in the NFL would look a lot closer to me playing DE in the NFL. For the most part. |
Re: Golston at DE?
LOL sometimes I think we ever talk about is switching guys to different positions.

That and a GM. Like either is the panacae of perfection and will solve all our problems. |
Re: Golston at DE?
Golston at DE would be the equivalent to the jumbo package on offense. If we need to stop a sure run, maybe they could line him up. DE/DT hybrids are more often heavyweight DE's as opposed to fast DT's. Just the way it works.
|
Re: Golston at DE?
Looks like a slam dunk guys, no Golston to DE

Re: Golston at DE?
Gaines Adams is not a great player. We would really be taking a risk at drafting him. Last year against South Carolina (this is Clemsons biggest rival) Gaines did nothing, and the TIgers lost. I think this says alot about the guy. SC does not have great Oline men and they kept him at bay all day long. I think this guy is very overated.
