If Chargers can get a 1st & 3rd for Turner, don't we have to shop Betts?
ProFootballTalk.com -- The Best Pro Football Scoop on the Internet
The above link says backup RB Michael Turner is visiting Buffalo and Tenn. I later heard Clayton on ESPN radio state that it was a very real possibility that Turner would sign with Buffalo, and they would then give up a 1st and 3rd rounder. If that's the case, shouldn't the Skins FO be shopping Betts? He's not an every down back for the season (injuries) and he does seem to fumble at times. With his contract, I would think the Skins could get a 1st and a 3rd for him too. |
Re: If Chargers can get a 1st & 3rd for Turner, don't we have to shop Betts?
Anybody who signs him has to give SD compensation because he is a restrcited FA. SD signed him to the highest possible tender.
Just my opinion but can we please stop with all the trade Betts/Portis talk. Its getting old and its not gonna happen anyway. |
Re: If Chargers can get a 1st & 3rd for Turner, don't we have to shop Betts?
A little late now don't you think? He's already a big part of our plans for next year and Gibbs seems pretty set on reducing the workload for Portis.
A little late now don't you think? He's already a big part of our plans for next year and Gibbs seems pretty set on reducing the workload for Portis.
And not a moment too soon.
There's a chance that Portis will be unable to regain his 2005 form due to the amount of carries he got that season. I have to say though, his per play numbers as a less than healthy running back were very promising. It's not unprescidented for a player to get as many carries as Portis got in 2005 to never regain a dominant form, after all, not everybody can be Eric Dickerson or Jerome Bettis. Having Betts will ensure that if Portis ends up not being as good as he has been that we can switch RBs without having to do something stupid like trading a 3rd round pick for a RB. At the very least, lightening Portis' load will prevent him from having another season where he takes a beating similar to the one he took in 2005, and should prolong his career. |
Re: If Chargers can get a 1st & 3rd for Turner, don't we have to shop Betts?
about a month ago i was all for trading betts. but not now. too late in the game. i think Gibbs and co. have a solid plan going into next season( or at least i hope)

Re: If Chargers can get a 1st & 3rd for Turner, don't we have to shop Betts?
People, People.... can we please remember that Betts started only 8 games last year and rushed for 1154 yards....He is also a North, South runner.... why would we want to get rid of him?????:soapbox:

Doesn't mean we should get rid of him, but it's not time for any LJ comparisions just yet. |
Re: If Chargers can get a 1st & 3rd for Turner, don't we have to shop Betts?
I just can't understand how these trade Betts rumors continue to surface. There has been no talk out of Redskin park that the team has any intention of trading Betts. It's just not going to happen, so it seems useless to continue rehashing it.

Re: If Chargers can get a 1st & 3rd for Turner, don't we have to shop Betts?
I just think if you can get a 1st rounder for Betts, with all the holes this team has, why not do it? Betts is ok, he's not great.

Re: If Chargers can get a 1st & 3rd for Turner, don't we have to shop Betts?
You create a hole by trading Betts so where does that help us?

There's no way we get a 1st round DP for Betts. So you're probably right when you say "IF"....That's a mighty big word. |
Re: If Chargers can get a 1st & 3rd for Turner, don't we have to shop Betts?
How about this for an if. IF someone offers us a first and third for Betts for consider it, otherwise we proceed with the scheduled plan for next season.

LOL! Noway you get a 1st rounder for Betts. We need him here for depth. |

turner isn't worth that much, don't know if buff will give up that much & Betts is too valuable to us

I doubt the bills would be willing to give up so much for turner when they got so little for mcgahee

Every since I started the forum on the Jets trying to trade us J Vilma, I have been an advocate of dealing him to acquire more picks for out first day of the draft. Even now that Mike Turner is looking like he is going to Buffalo, the RB market is scarce leading up to the draft. Teams are looking to tighten up on that position, and we are looking for more drafted talent, while possesing a limited supply of first day picks, or total draft day picks as a whole. We have a heck of a tandem with CP & LB! LB is going nowhere!
It would not suprise me one bit if LB is a career REDSKIN. This talk is nonsense! |

He didnt even have as many TD as Portis and he played more games! He wasn't even drafted by gibbs, so he, like the spurrier campaign, is soon to be a distant, yet painful, memory. Even though he played well last season, this is the NFL ladies and gents, people get traded and released after better seasons than Betts had last year(e.g. Javon Walker - Packers, Adam Vinateri - Patriots, Trent Dilfer - SuperBowl Champs- Ravens, and Edgerrin James - Colts). Its not uncommon, or even bad business practice from any current NFl front office, that teams sign-and-trade players/trade players on draft day to enhace their draft posturing. Yet, all of this remains to be seen. If Betts is on his way out, the best way to go about it is to wait until draft day. After all of the deals are on the table, then we can make a better decision as to how to package him(if we decided to take that course of action). L Betts is not that good, and he is expendable for better draft posturing and roster depth. In this system a RB can be found late in the draft or via undrafted free agency(Preist Holmes, Willie Parker, and Dominick Rhodes). Lets stack draft picks, draft wisely, and roll into next with fresh talent and depth at previously weak postions. |

If/When he stays, you will be reminded on draft day of players that we could have had, but we will be crooning at the fact that we were afraid to position for that talent. Walker held out and essentially forced a trade, Vinatieri and EJ were both free agents who left their teams for better deals. That's not the same as trading a player. Maybe, just maybe you could make the argument that not re-signing a free agent is the same as "releasing" the player, but that would be stretching it. I think we should leave our quarterback, running back and wide receiver situations alone. Not necessarily because I think Betts is great (he's decent) but because I think the unit as a whole would greatly benefit from all coming back together for another year. |
Re: If Chargers can get a 1st & 3rd for Turner, don't we have to shop Betts?
Well if the Chargers do in fact get 1st round compensation for Turner, then we missed the boat because although Betts isn't a superstar, he's just as good, if not better than, Turner.

Re: If Chargers can get a 1st & 3rd for Turner, don't we have to shop Betts?
Stop the madness!!!
We just signed Betts to a deal including a $3.5 million bonus. If we trade him, we have to eat it, and it eats into the little cap room we have left. It's not going to happen for financial reasons, but when you mention how much Joe Gibbs loves him, the discussion enters the realm of the ridiculous. You want to be able to sign rookies, don't you? Then we can't trade Betts. Kill the thread, please. - Thread Killer |

Or if that did happen, maybe you would like to see another TJ Duckett trade for one of the draft picks of which you speak. Got that right, after the past season Gibbs is starting to realize that Betts is his best back, and he signed a system back in Portis, he is now in the process of easing the transition to reduce the amount of egg on his face, and to try to avoid hurting Clinton's feelings. As if I didn't see this coming. |

It assumes that everyone has an equal amount of success running in Denver when clearly Portis, Mike Anderson, and Terell Davis stand head and shoulders above the rest.
Portis and Betts were drafted in the same year in the same round. Seriously what grounds do you have to say that one or the other is a system back? If anything, Betts should be considered the system back because he hasn't done it anywhere but here. |
Re: If Chargers can get a 1st & 3rd for Turner, don't we have to shop Betts?
I don't see how this trade could help us. I admit he had a good season last year filling in for CP, but that doesn't raise his value that much. We won't see a 1st round pick. Once again "IF" we did, I think we should at least consider it with the holes on defense that we need to fill.

Or maybe he's just seen the benefit of having two quality backs, like a lot of teams in this league are doing now. And given the fact Portis is coming off a serious injury it only makes sense to ease him back in rather than giving him 350 carries given the fact he's had a 1300+ yard season here and a 1500+ yard season. Portis is still the better back and he's definitely not a system back, don't kid yourself. Your system back argument doesn't hold much water anymore. The way the offensive line was playing in the 2nd half of last year Rock Cartwright would have probably had similar success to Betts. |

Why is everyone so quick to want to get rid of a guy who played very well last season? It's called quality depth people!!!!! And who says SD is going to get a 1st and a 3rd? I doubt Buffalo will give that up for Turner. Just because the guy is visiting these teams does not mean the teams are going to give up that amount of compensation. |

Calling Portis a "system" back is ridicules. I'm not even going to comment any further. |
Portis is a quality back with any team... he just bounces around to much for the Redskin sytem... we need someone who will hit a hole and hit it hard.
I don't think CP "bounces" too much. Every now and then he shows some dance moves in the backfield, but he is a pretty tough runner when he needs to be - he is pretty much a one cut runner w/ the ability to do more (it is b/c he doesn't "dance" that he was so good in the Denver system - which is a one cut system). In fact, CP's biggest problem, IMHO, is that he is a big back in small back body and, consequently, takes a beating for it. If Portis had been full speed at the end of last year, he would've made 1800+ yards behind that line. He is just quicker and faster than Betts (who I also happen to like). |
Re: If Chargers can get a 1st & 3rd for Turner, don't we have to shop Betts?
I think Portis will really explode in this offense. He just never got comfortable last year with a new offense and mostly due to the injury which altered his running style and aggressiveness.
|

I wouldn't be so sure of that, one of the reasons for Betts success last season with the same line is the fact that he hit's the hole much faster than Portis, and he hit's it with more power and drive. Yes Portis is faster over all but that only helps after you have reached the secondary, it is better to be faster to the hole than in the secondary. Portis is exactly what I thought he was when we traded for him, he's a 3rd down change of pace type back who was made to look better than he really is in that denver system as were many backs. My biggest problem with Portis as a player is not the fact that he can't be a good back if used the way he's supposed to, the problem is we gave up a ton to get a guy who really isn't an everydown type back. So now he has added to much weight to try and handle the beating an every down back takes and it has taken away from his biggest attribute and that is his explosion. |
