Okoye Article In ESPN The Magazine
ESPN.com - NFL/DRAFT07 - Magazine: Huge for his age
Although I've been a devils advocate LL and CJ booster because so many people seem to think DL is the ONLY way to go, you've got to like the sound of this guy. I for one would not be upset if they picked him. He's smart, tough and real young, with tons of upside. I wonder how his age will play in the minds of the team based on the fact that this guy will have more impact down the road and Gibbs needs wins now. Thoughts? I couldn't find this so I started a thread. If this is a repeat, please delete. I believe Okoye has gotten the most support from people here. Linkage above. |
Re: Okoye Article In ESPN The Magazine
i had no idea he was 19. DAAAAMN!!!!
i like him at 6. |
Re: Okoye Article In ESPN The Magazine
We all know what an athletic freak Calvin Johnson is. And JaMarcus Russell's size and arm strength is in the freakish category.
Athletically speaking, this guy Okoye is the only other one I'd call freakish. To be this size at 19 is nothing short of astounding, and to be this quick on top of it, pretty special. There's potential to put on even more muscle which is the most amazing thing of all. I think he'd make a very good anchor for the run defense, and he'd be quick enough to command attention in the pass rush. He's the guy in the draft I want us to draft most. |

Re: Okoye Article In ESPN The Magazine
okoye is the only choice...He is only going to get bigger and better. come on guys hes frikkin 19 yrs old hes going to grow and he will be a very big asset to our dl for many many yrs to come. pick him joe gibbs...even if we trade down we can still get him. he is the "one"
|
Re: Okoye Article In ESPN The Magazine
Best scenario. Atlanta can't/don't want to trade up for Calvin Johnson. Instead, Atlanta trades picks #8 and #75 overall to move up two spots and take Landry. Redskins drop to #8 and take Okoye plus get a 3rd round pick pretty close to the one we gave up for (cough) T.J. Duckett. Works on the trade value chart and makes sense for Atlanta if they really want Landry as many 'experts' indicate.

Re: Okoye Article In ESPN The Magazine
with okoye the sky is the limit with the so called upside bit how patient are some around here going to be with the development of such a young player? he would make some plays here but there are going to be some he cant or wont make and i wonder how receptive our defensive coaching staff will be with that. Hopefully a little more flexible than they were with a certain safety.

Man we've been waiting for 15 years for another Championship calliber team. What's a couple more? |

funny you said that considering i swear i have uttered this phrase for at least 15 years now....there is always next season. I am so sick of that. I am ready for a championship caliber team now. The future is now considering the age of most of the offensive coaching staff.....with that being said the skins need to draft someone with their pick that will immediately help us. As appealing as okoye is how raw is he? is he ready to step in and contribute now? if the answer is yes then by all means we need to draft him but if not i dont know....With the six pick all i am asking for is a player who can step in right now and contribute. |
Re: Okoye Article In ESPN The Magazine
At 19 he is better than anyone else we have at DT (except possibly a healthy Griffin). Does this mean that he is at full potential? Absolutely not, but he can definately step in and contribute come September. How great would it be having a Pro Bowl beast along the line for a 16-17 year career?
Personally I'd rather trade down w/ Denver, pick up 2 extra picks and grab Carriker. With the way Okoye has been moving up mock draft boards the lowest we can go is probably 9 with Miami if we still want him. |
Re: Okoye Article In ESPN The Magazine
Could you picture winning a Super Bowl, and not being allowed to drink? That would suck. I wouldn't be suprised if he was an impact player wherever he goes. All of the other sports have started pulling in these young players, why not the NFL?

Re: Okoye Article In ESPN The Magazine
It's silly to just want to win this year. That is something that has obviously not worked the last 5 years of trying it. It shouldn't be so ridiculous to build a team to win in three years.
Making excuses under the guise of wanting to win it every year just shows desparation and not pre-meditated strategy. I rather follow a plan than just to take random roulette shots every year. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ By the way, love my Skins! |
Re: Okoye Article In ESPN The Magazine
"Okoye was still looking for any way in, so when Campbell asked if he was related to former Chiefs star Christian Okoye, the Nigerian Nightmare, Amobi said yes, even though he wasn't."
Sounds like he might have character issues. |

yeah... I should have followed it up with a j/k.

Re: Okoye Article In ESPN The Magazine
The kid is 19, after 10 years of dominance, he still wouldn't have hit 30 yet, plus he has tremendous potential. I like him, so I say we go for him. I mean we're at the bottom of the barrel right now, there's no place to go but up, right?

He's the guy in the draft I want us to draft most.
I'm with you, but here's the thing. The Redskins don't cope well with young players. Looking at how poorly they prepped Jason Campbell to win a game last year, and how poorly they prepped Rocky McIntosh to play a game last year, and their general attitute to the draft, it seems that the oldest coaching staff in the NFL prefers players 28 to 32. Younger players are warehoused until/unless the Skins are FORCED to use them (Kedric Golston). One side effect of bringing in free agent vets is that the coaching staff isn't very good at developing rookies imho. There's a good chance that Gaines Adams will be gone by pick six. If that's the case, Okoye would be the best choice for the Redskins situation rignt now. Only, the Skins will trade #6 for a veteran player, if they can. The kid will be an NFL starter before he's old enough to drink. |

actually we could get five records worse |
Re: Okoye Article In ESPN The Magazine
I like this guy, and I always loved the way his father played "The Nigerian Nightmare". I still remeber reading an article about him in KIDS SI back in the early 90's.
This kid has real upside and maybe he is the way we should go in the upcoming draft. He could anchor our line for 10 years and only be 29!! Amazing. I like the idea of Dline, but do you guys think GW would let him on the field for the first part of the season? |
Re: Okoye Article In ESPN The Magazine
I can't figure out why, but I have a sinking feeling that the Skins aren't going to draft Okoye.
Something in my gut tells me they're going to go in a direction none of us expected. I hope I'm wrong. |

S. Taylor didn't start immediately but he started most of his rookie year. Carlos Rogers also cracked the starting lineup his rookie year. Both were top 10 picks. Remember also that Golston & Montgomery beat out N.Clemons & Cedric Killings for rosters spots last year. There could be a similar battle in camp this year w/Wynn, Daniels & Evans' spots up for competition. I don't think the coaches are poor at developing talent so much as they are cautious about putting guys in that might gamble too easily. |
Re: Okoye Article In ESPN The Magazine
Okoye is really cerebral and will grow into an NFL body. It reminds me a lot of merriman b/c when he was at maryland, IMO, he was NFL-ready at the age of 19, though he was drafted a year later. He still has tremendous upside of becoming even more physically dominating as he is only 22. The only knock on okoye is that he is a DT and its not really a game changing position, though it is vital. What we need from a DT, is to just be an anchor in the middle of the field that will take on doubles and let our other playmakers get some breathing room to operate. Okoye is not this kind of player yet and may never develop into this mold. However, Okoye is still the highest reward lowest risk D-lineman in the draft. I wouldn't be opposed to drafting him but i still think we should get more picks if possible

However, I don't think he will end up in DC. |

The front office operated bad in the recent years, it would seem that we would win every year, but the only thing we won was the dumb free agent race. Strategy and consciousness is all we need for the future. |
Re: Okoye Article In ESPN The Magazine
If we were to pick a D-lineman, this is who I would want.
At 19 he can only get bigger, stronger, faster, and better. |

DT is not a game changing position??? That is just plain false. I would argue that a dominant DT is the the most sought after position other than quaterback. There are very few players in the NFL that can penatrate the middle of the the offensive line to stuff and run and rush the passer. This kid has that rare ability. He reminds me a lot of the Warren Sapp. Who buy the way was the most important piece in the Tampa 2 defense. |
